Valid concern nannab.....a representative of the finance ministry would seem a better choice. Maybe he is in a position to make a deal and get both off of Iraqi soil....just hoping.

Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi will visit neighbours Turkey and Iran next week, as the US issues new sanctions on Tehran and amid Washington's "economic war" with Ankara.

"[Abadi] will head to Turkey on Tuesday and Iran on Wednesday to discuss economic affairs with the two countries," the official told AFP on Saturday.

Iraq is a close trading partner with Turkey and Iran, with Baghdad the second-largest importer of Iranian non-hydrocarbon products.

Iraq spent around $6 billion worth of goods from Iran in 2017.

It's also a major buyer of Iranian-generated electricity, following months of protests at energy cuts.

Abadi agreed to comply with new US sanctions against Tehran but voiced strong reservations about the measures.

"We don't support the sanctions because they are a strategic error, but we will comply with them," Abadi said.

Iraq has strong ties with both Iran and the US, and has tried to balance its relationship between the two parties which in recent years have been at each other's throats.

Abadi's visit to Ankara is also overshadowed by a bitter row between Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his US counterpart Donald Trump.

The US announced on Friday it was doubling steel and aluminium tariffs on Turkey as part of an ongoing row over the detention of American pastor Andrew Brunson and other issues.

This led to the Turkish lira dropping by 16 percent against the dollar on Friday to record lows.

Turkish Leader Rejects US's 'Threatening Language

Turkish Leader Rejects US's 'Threatening Language'

ERBIL - Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan rejected on Saturday the "threatening language" of the Washington administration, state-run media said.

"They are threatening us. You cannot bring [Turkish] people to their knees by using a threatening language. We are knowledgeable with justice and law," Anadolu Agency quoted Erdogan.

The Turkish top official's remarks came a day after the US President Donald Trump threatened to double his country's tariffs on Ankara's aluminum and steel imports to 20 percent and 50 percent, according to the news agency.

Erdoğan added that "it is a shame. You prefer a pastor to a strategic ally of yours in NATO," as cited by Anadolu Agency.

The ties between the sides started to deteriorate after the US decided to impose sanctions on its NATO ally's Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu and Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul over a detained American pastor in Turkey.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif on Saturday criticised US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose additional tariffs on Turkey.

“Trump’s jubilation in inflicting economic hardship on its NATO ally Turkey is shameful. The US has to rehabilitate its addiction to sanctions & bullying or entire world will unite, beyond verbal condemnations, to force it to.

“We’ve stood with neighbors before, and will again now,” Zarif wrote on his official Twitter account.

Zarif’s remarks came a day Trump ramped up his attack on Turkey by doubling US tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel imports to 20 percent and 50 percent, respectively.

Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy on Friday said in a statement that Trump’s decision, which disregards World Trade Organization rules, “cannot be associated with seriousness expected from a state”.

“All the steps taken against Turkey will be given a befitting response as they have been given before,” Aksoy added.

Iran calling US actions shameful is comical.  Hey Iran, stop building nukes and creating proxy wars all over the ME.  While we’re talking shameful, tricking Barry with a Nuclear Deal you knew you would never abide by was so honorable.  NOT.

Turkey wants to play tough and put a US Pastor in jail then you get Trumps wrath.  While he is at it he should pressure NATO to kick your sorry butt out.  Taking advantage of the US is over under this President. Sabes!!!!

[Asharq Al-Awsat] Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi's office confirmed that Iraq's stance on the US sanctions imposed on Iran stems from the general interest of Iraq.

He added that "the Iraqi government can not take any position that can not be consistent with the interests of the Iraqi people, and therefore the commitment to US sanctions on Iran came from this interest."

(Baghdad: Al-Furat News) criticized the member of the Political Bureau of the National Wisdom Movement, Mohamed Elkash, the position of Prime Minister Haider Abadi, of US sanctions against Iran.
"Al-Abbadi's position on the US sanctions against Iran, and his recent commitment to them, indicate that his eye on the second term," Al-Wakash said in a statement received by the Euphrates News Agency.
He added that "the US sanctions on Iran is unilateral, and not international to be committed to Iraq."
Al-Wakash expressed regret for the Iraqi government's decision to impose sanctions, stressing that "Iraq should not abide by these sanctions as some countries have done."
"The government was supposed to take a courageous position, as did Turkey, China and other countries, but Abadi appointed him to the second term," he said, noting that Iraq should not be "a party to starve the Muslim peoples."
Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said last Tuesday that Iraq is not interfering with US sanctions against Iran, but said that the government "will abide by it to protect the interests of Iraq, we can not get out of the international system of the global economy and we can not harm the interests of our people. The Iraqi political expert, Ibrahim al-Sarraji, that Baghdad's commitment to US sanctions imposed on Iran and Turkey will inflict great damage on the Iraqi economy, stressing that the position of Baghdad under these harsh sanctions is very difficult on the political and economic levels.

Cairo - Sputnik . "The US sanctions imposed on Iran and Turkey will have a significant negative effect on Iraq. The volume of trade exchange between Baghdad and Tehran exceeds 13 billion dollars a year. There are also Iranian companies and facilities in the field of oil, gas and gas," al-Sarraji told Sputnik. Liquefied petroleum, and the supply of electricity to the majority of the provinces. "

"In the event that Iraq is committed to the US sanctions [the official position is announced], his economy will be affected very significantly, in addition to the Iranian and Turkish goods represent two-thirds of the Iraqi market," he said. "A food crisis, for example, This will reflect very negatively on the daily lives of citizens. "

The political expert pointed out that "Iraq is in a very difficult position, pointing out that Prime Minister Haider Abadi said a few days ago that Baghdad will abide by sanctions, and on the other side there are large blocs and political parties against these sanctions and believes that it will starve the Iraqi people as well, .

As for the position of the Iraqi government to abide by the US sanctions, Al-Sarraji said: "Abadi said he will abide by and there are political and economic agreements between Baghdad and Washington. My slaves are now in a very awkward position. There is very great damage on the Iraqi economy. Baghdad has no alternative to cooperating with Iran. , And also the large Iranian security support for the Iraqi forces, especially the popular crowd will be affected, and will affect the conduct of security and military operations.

"On the other hand, his remarks provoked an Iranian reservation, which Tehran considered treacherous, which gave a lot to the Iraqi people, especially in its war against the organization calling [the prohibited terrorist in Russia]."

The political expert added that Iraq can certainly not stand against the US administration alone, and Abadi or others can not say that he will not abide by the decisions of the United States, keeping track of "Iraq's oil revenues are placed in the accounts of US banks, and this means that the US administration knows how to punish Iraq on any Deal with Iran, or break the blockade it imposed against it. "

Al-Sarraji pointed out that "the position of the Iraqi government is very weak, can not say no to the American administration, and also its position is very difficult with Iran, and the US side will insist on Iraq's full commitment to the decisions of the blockade of Iran, knowing that Iran will emerge from this siege, Its oil is sold to countries that do not recognize US decisions such as North Korea, China, India and others. "

As for the differences we are witnessing today under US pressure than before the lifting of the sanctions after the signing of the nuclear agreement in July 2015, Al-Serraji said: "The sanctions were not before 2015. Today, the great American reservation and pressure from US partners such as Israel, And the Gulf states on Iran is very large, the United States did not ask Iraq before 2015 to abide by sanctions. "

"Iraq has not changed its economic policy, sanctions have not forced him to do so before 2015, and now he will. In addition, the US administration now has included the Bank of the country, run by Iraqi National Congress Chairman Aras Habib, on its terrorism list, The Central Bank of Iraq is blacklisted and deprived of these transactions, so the situation is now completely different. "

"We heard that the United States proposed to the government to deal with Saudi Arabia, for example, as an alternative to Iran in the Iraqi market, but this needs a period of time, not to mention the popular rejection of Saudi goods, and to prevent their purchase by some governments," Serraji said. "We do not have a real alternative to Iran, and also in the field of electrical interconnection. Iran is the largest supplier of power stations and generators."

"Saudi Arabia or other countries can not be an immediate substitute for Iran in Iraq, and Iranian goods can not be cut off overnight," Serraji said.

"The American influence on the prime minister's industry, or at least giving instructions to the prime minister is very large, and I do not think that any prime minister, even if Abadi changed to take decisions against American will. "

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – As the economic row between Washington and Ankara deepens, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan remains defiant, describing the United States’ decision to impose sanctions an “operation.”

On Friday, US President Donald Trump said he would double steel and aluminum tariffs on Turkey.

During a speech at the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) meeting in the Black Sea province of Trabzon on Sunday, Erdogan said the US “is making an operation against Turkey.”

“Its aim is to force Turkey to surrender in every field from finance to politics, to make Turkey and the Turkish nation kneel down,” he added, calling the imposing of sanctions an “economic war.”

The Trump administration has called for the immediate release of the US pastor, Andrew Brunson, who Turkey arrested in the aftermath of the failed 2016 military coup attempt.

Erdogan’s government charges Brunson, a Protestant evangelical pastor, with being involved in the putsch along with Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is in self-imposed exile in the US.

The dispute between the NATO allies has caused the Turkish lira to crash as low as 7.22 against the US dollar.

“We have seen your play, and we challenge you,” Erdogan said during his speech in Trabzon, referring to the drop in over 16 percent of the Turkish lira against the dollar.

Despite his country’s currency falling significantly, the Turkish President is adamant Turkey is not on the brink of an economic crisis, calling on citizens to exchange US dollars and Euros for the Turkish lira.
