ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq’s electricity ministry said on Friday that the portion of the national power supplied by Iran had been cut off due to funds owed by Baghdad, and that the decision would exacerbate the yearly shortages experienced in the hot summer months.

Ministry Spokesperson Mosaab al-Madras was quoted by the Anadolu Agency as saying that Iraq's rising debt to its neighbor was the reason for Iran's recent action.

He did not specify the amount owed, but media reports have suggested it could be as much as $1 billion in unpaid fees for the supplied power.

"The Ministry of Electricity calls on citizens to increase the rationalization of electricity consumption to reduce the burden of the electrical system due to the suspension of the processing of electric power from the Islamic Republic of Iran, [a] capacity of (1000) megawatts," read a statement released earlier on the ministry's website.

It continued by saying the move "directly and negatively affected the number of hours of processing," in the southern provinces of Basra, Nasiriyah, and Amara.

Rising temperatures in the country lead to increased air conditioning usage, putting extra strain on the nation's beleaguered power infrastructure. Electricity cuts have been frequent in Iraq as the national system is unable to provide the required amount of energy in times of extreme heat, notably in the three provinces named by the ministry, where protests against power shortages are common.

"Work is underway," said the statement, "in coordination with the Iranian side, to bring these lines back to operation."

Iran has stopped the flow of electricity to Iraq.

People reacted and held a protest accusing the government of not solving the problem.

It is believed that the period of electricity interruptions in Meysan, Zikar and Basra would be long.

Musa al-Muderris, spokesman of the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, said that due to the debts, Iran has stopped a thousand megawatts of electricity flow to Iraq as of Friday.

al-Muderris said that negotiations with Iran are ongoing and added that electricity productions do not meet consumption.

On the other hand, the people of the town of Xebat, Hewlêr, organized a protest on Saturday morning.

The demonstration was to protest against the electricity problem in the region. Demonstrators closed the main road between the towns of Gewrkosk and Xebat to traffic.

"The government - said the demonstrators - are not working on a solution of the electricity problem we are experiencing. If we continue to sell our electricity to Mosul, we will resort to different actions".https://anfenglish.com/news/iran-cuts-flow-of-electricity-to-iraq-28055

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraq’s electricity ministry said Friday that power supplies from Iran were halted due to Iraq’s soaring debt, exacerbating the nation-wide supply shortage.

Anadolu Agency quoted ministry spokesman, Mosaab al-Madras, saying that Iran cut off electricity supplies to Iraq (1000 megawatts) on Thursday, adding to outages in Dhi Qar, Maysan and Basra provinces. He attributed the cut to Iraq’s growing debts to Iran regarding the imported electricity.

Though the spokesperson did not specify the amount owed to Iran, estimates put them a nearly

one billion dollars, according to the agency.

According to the Iraqi ministry, Iraq produces 15700 megawatts of electricity, but needs more than 23000 megawatts per hour to ensure nonstop supply to residents and institutions.

A member of the now-inactive Iraqi parliament’s financial committee, Masoud Haider, was quoted by press reports saying yesterday that Iraq’s foreign debts exceed USD112 billion.

Talk about brotherly love. I hope Iraq is getting the message. Earlier, Turkey started cutting back the amount of water allowed downstream to Iraq. Open your market, put a realistic value on your currency, start building your infrastructure to benefit your citizens. Price per barrel of oil has nearly doubled in last 2 years. The world is tired of giving you handouts.

That water problem is very easy to fix, one little air raid to bomb the Turkish dams.  Water is more precious that oil in the ME.

Witholding water would be an act of war in my mind.

The second part part of your post is right on!!!

You are right ,and I was naive to think this was  some kind of mistake rather than a calculated plan hatched from corruptness

IRAN / IRAN Date: 2018 Jul. 8 - GMT

Energy Minister Riza Erdkanian said Iran is exporting about 1,300 megawatts of electricity to Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan, while exports will stop at the peak of domestic consumption.

"There is a possibility to import 700 megawatts. Iran is importing electricity from Turkmenistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan," Erdogan told Iran's state television on Saturday night.

Minister Erdkanian pointed out that Iran has an energy exchange network with all neighboring countries and that this is a great advantage, and we aim to shift to a huge energy pole in the region.

He stressed that Iran intends through Azerbaijan and Georgia to communicate electrically with Russia and then to Europe.

On the other hand, the Iranian Energy Minister denied rumors of exporting water to the Arab countries, stressing that Iran does not have any program to transfer water to neighboring countries and to the future.

Despite the announcement of the Ministry of Electricity on the stability of nutrition in Baghdad after the lifting of excesses represented by daylight, the suffering of citizens throughout the country continued with the high temperature and low feeding hours to less than ten hours a day.

As the ministry’s sources talk about many reasons behind the worsening electricity crisis years ago, another reason was added this year for the crisis: Iran cut off the energy line, under the pretext of the financial dues that Iraq delayed to pay.

An official in the electricity sector disclosed the visit of Minister Qassem al-Fahdawi and a senior delegation from the ministry to Tehran to reach a settlement with the Iranian side and restart the power line.

The coordinator between the Ministry of Electricity and the Council of the province of Baghdad, Ahmed Musa that “the Iranian side has and without introductions to cut the line that equips Iraq with a thousand and 200 megawatts, a large amount affecting most of the provinces.”

Moussa believes that other factors in addition to the exit of the Iranian line, have to do with the problem of electricity this summer, including “the impact of high temperatures on the efficiency of power plants and transmission lines, in addition to the increasing demand for energy because of the heat wave.”

“The war against Da’ash brought about 6,000 megawatts of electricity and caused the destruction of new power plants even before they started, including the Baiji plant, which produces 1,000 megawatts,” said Ahmed Moussa, who is also the media official at the General Electricity Distribution Company.

“The capital of Baghdad alone needs about 5,000 MW, which is impossible under the current circumstances due to the problems experienced by the Ministry of Electricity, which is reflected in the level of processing.”

The Ministry of Electricity complains that the funds allocated to it from the country’s financial budget are insufficient to meet its needs for the maintenance and processing of energy, as well as the funds due to the Iranian side.

Despite government subsidies for electricity consumption of 94 per cent according to government data, this has not lessened the resentment and criticism of the Government, as subsidies provide only a fraction of the citizens’ need for electricity and have to rely on private generators With high wages to meet their energy needs.

The Iraqi authorities fear the outbreak of large-scale demonstrations these days as a result of the electricity crisis similar to that which started in the southern province of Basra in July 2015, and led to the death of young man Muntadr Hilfi, followed by a wave of large demonstrations including Baghdad and most of the provinces of the center and the south.

The Ministry of Electricity said on Monday that the exit of the Iranian feeder line to provinces in Iraq, including Basra, was not due to non-payment of the debts owed by the ministry to the Iranian side, due to the lack of production of Iranian electric power. Sanctions.

Undersecretary of the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity Adel Jarayan said in a statement to Al-Marbad radio that the issue of debts owed by the ministry is not new and there are debts accumulated since last year and that his ministry continues to pay debts in the form of payments and there is still accumulated debts, stressing that the problem in debt repayment is due to obstruction In the mechanism paid by the new sanctions imposed on Iran, explaining at the same time that his ministry has asked Iran to send a delegation to negotiate on finding a new mechanism to pay those receivables.

"The other reason is the lack of production on the Iranian side and there are power outages in a number of areas of the region, because they are also importing electricity from neighboring countries. These contracts have not been paid by Iran to its beneficiaries, which has negatively affected production."

The head of the Electricity Committee in the Council of Basra, Mujib al-Hassani announced on Sunday, the cessation of the Iranian line feeding to Iraq again after the return of a capacity of 220 megawatts, against the background of non-payment of the Ministry of Electricity entitlements due to Iran for that line, which exceeds 800 million dollars.

This saw the province of Basra yesterday a demonstration in which dozens of citizens to demand better electricity services.

Iraq already has the capabilities to generate there own electricity with their own fuel. Likely will produce more jobs and allow for growth of their country without ever loosing power again. But it's always a stupid move to not pay the electricity bill.  C'mon. Really?!
