The NRT Arab website , Wednesday, obtained photographs confirming the installation of giant machines to pay water in Basra under the supervision of the representative of the supreme religious authority, Ahmed al-Safi.

The water of the Shatt al-Arab recorded an increase in salinity rates not seen in more than 10 years. The Center for Marine Sciences at the University of Basra recently stated that "water will only be usable after new projects are completed."

According to WHO standards, salinity in water should not exceed 1,000 ppm, a percentage that has been exceeded by Basra for a long time.

UN envoy urges speedy formation of Iraqi government to tackle issues

Expresses ‘grave concerns’ over casualties during Basra protests

2018-09-05

SULAMANI — UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Jan Kubis, on Wednesday (September 5) urged Iraqi political leaders and newly elected lawmakers to act “responsibly and without delay” to agree on a new government that will respond to the people’s demands.

Kubis expressed “grave concerns” over casualties that occurred during Tuesday night’s protests in Basra, where five protesters were killed and 68 others wounded according to the country’s health ministry.

The UN envoy for Iraq also urged the authorities to provide necessary protection for the Basra residents and avoid using “disproportionate, lethal force” against the protesters.

Kubis called on the Iraqi government to “do its utmost to respond to the people’s rightful demands of clean water and electricity supplies as a matter of urgency.”

He also urged “political leaders and the newly elected Council of Representatives to assume their duties and act responsibly and without delay, including taking all the necessary steps to expeditiously agree on a new national, patriotic and pro-reform government that will quickly and effectively respond to the people’s longstanding needs and deliver on their basic demands of water and electricity and the longer-term goal of job creation and life in dignity.”

“Long-term stability and improved economic performance go hand-in-hand, and tackling these challenges rests with the political leaders uniting and working together in the national interest,” he said.

Hundreds of protesters clashed with security forces in the country's southern oil hub for a second day during demonstrations in Basra on Tuesday night.

Protesters stormed a government building where they had been demonstrating and set it on fire and security forces fired live rounds into the air as well as tear gas, local sources said.

Government buildings in Basra have been the target of demonstrators who are demanding better public services and an end to corruption.

Protests have swept cities in the long-neglected south, Iraq’s Shia Muslim heartland, over electricity outages during the hot Iraqi summer, a lack of jobs and proper government services, and entrenched graft.

Baghdad Mawazine News

Former governor of Nineveh province, Athil al-Nujaifi, predicted Wednesday that Iraqi provinces will witness similar events in the province of Basra.
"In short, we have not returned figures of the size of the crises, and if we return a little they have no role," Nujaifi said in a tweet on the social networking site Twitter.

The Iraqi Health Ministry announced at dawn today that five demonstrators were killed, 41 others wounded and 27 security forces injured in the events in Basra since Tuesday.
Security authorities imposed a sweeping ban on roaming after protesters set fire to the local government building and wheels for security forces in Basra.
Basra is Iraq's second-largest city and stronghold of cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, a former leader of an anti-US armed faction that presents itself as anti-corruption.
Public anger has grown at a time when politicians are struggling to form a new government after inconclusive parliamentary elections in May.
Sadr's bloc was in first place in the election, marred by corruption allegations that led to a recount.

Just a better of life. No war, strife. How about JOBS, FOOD, ELECTRICITY, Reinstatement of their currency and  such.

Just too much to ask for from greedy corrupt politicians who’s sole interest is getting a piece of the action to swell their foreign bank accounts.

Good on You Sadr. Force these fools back into session, and see to the nation and the needs of the people.
