"A few weeks ago, the threats to our staff and facilities in Iraq have increased," Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo said in a press statement on Friday evening. "These threats come from the Iranian government, the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards, Assisted and controlled by the Qods Force Commander Qasim Soleimani. "

"There have been repeated incidents of indirect fire at our consulate general in Basra, especially in the past 24 hours ."

"I have made it clear to Iran that the United States will respond promptly and appropriately to any attack" targeting US installations, the government of Iran has been told that the United States will hold Iran directly responsible for any damage to the Americans or In our diplomatic facilities in Iraq or anywhere else, whether or not (harm) committed by Iranian forces directly or by associated militias . "

Washington announced yesterday the closure of its consulate in Basra, where a spokeswoman for the US State Department Heather Naort, said Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo, ordered the "orderly departure" of all US personnel from Basra, explaining that the consular services will be provided by the US Embassy in Baghdad .

The US State Department has warned its citizens against traveling to Iraq, the second step in the past 24 hours, after warning its citizens yesterday at the US consulate in Basra, southern Iraq.

"US citizens in Iraq are very vulnerable to violence and kidnapping," the State Department said in a statement on its website, "Many terrorist and insurgent groups operate in Iraq and regularly attack Iraqi security forces and civilians."

"Sectarian militias may also threaten US citizens and Western companies throughout Iraq," the statement said, adding that IEDs frequently occur in many parts of the country, including Baghdad.

"The US government's ability to provide routine and emergency services to US citizens in Iraq is very limited," the US State Department ordered the US State Department to leave US consulates in Basra on September 28, 2018. The US Citizen Services Department (ACS) US in Baghdad to provide consular services to US citizens in Basra. "

CNN reported that missiles were fired at Basra airport in the early hours of Friday morning, but did not hit inside the US airport or consulate located near the airport.

Residents in Abusheir district, north of Basra, said they heard the sound of two rockets fired at 1:20 am local time towards the general area at Basra airport, while witnesses said the rockets fell outside the airport's borders.

For his part, a spokesman for the US State Department told CNN that the consulate was not harmed, stressing that the US State Department is closely monitoring the situation and that the safety and security of Americans is a top priority.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a previous statement that the United States would respond quickly and firmly to defend the lives of its citizens, accusing Iran of using its arms in Iraq to attack US installations, and supported by money, weapons and training programs for this purpose.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday that the US told Iran it will be held responsible for any harm happens to Americans or USfacilities in Iraq perpetrated by Iranian forces or associated militias.

The US has directed a temporary relocation of its diplomatic personnel in Iraq, given increasing and specific threats.

The State Department confirmed its decision to place consulate in Iraqi city of Basra on ordered departure
Do not travel to Iraq due to terrorism and armed conflict. 

Moreover, the State Department has warned the American citizens from traveling to Iraq, saying that U citizens in Iraq are at high risk for violence and kidnapping.

Numerous terrorist and insurgent groups are active in Iraq and regularly attack both Iraqi security forces and civilians,” The State Department statement released on Friday read.

“Anti-US sectarian militias may also threaten US citizens and Western companies throughout Iraq. Attacks by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) occur frequently in many areas of the country, including Baghdad” the statement added.

Due to risks to civil aviation operating within or in the vicinity of Iraq, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and/or a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR).

I agree this is a very big deal and a strong threat to their oil revenues.  I just don't believe that Iran is itching for war here.  They need a productive Iraq more than ever with the Nov. 5 sanctions coming up fast and Iraq as their number one currency generator.  What they want here is maximum disruption so as to discredit Abadi and Sadr and  thus open up a path to control for Amiri/Maliki.  Iran has a desperate need of an Iranian-Shiite dominated Iraqi government, Abadi/Sadr are far too centrist for their liking.

Iran is like a cornered critter.  It feels threatened and their country is taking big hits to the economy.  In their minds it’s all the USA’s fault and if pushed much more they will ( in there minds) have nothing to lose.  Think about it, if The USA was surrounded by hostiles and our economy was being crushed do you think we would just sit there and let it happen. 

 

What we we have here is a very dangerous game of chicken, a political chess game.  The US has the upper hand but the Iranians are not blinking or backing down.  In their minds they had already won the battle of the Nuclear Deal.  They want Nuclear weapons tp protect themselves from the US and to hold over the heads of other Arab countries.  Will it be war or will it be negotiations? Iran tried to bomb our offices in Basara. Is that the beginning to an escalation with the US or just a message? Time will tell. Personally I don’t want to see a War but I don’t like to see Iran building missles and deploying them throughout the ME and I don’t understand how we continue to allow Iran to have military in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and Yemen. 

 

I would not be surprised to hear that Iran is funneling money to oppose Trump in the coming elections. They meddled in Iraq, why wouldn’t they try to get rid of Trump.   Mmmm maybe we need to look into Iranian Collusion with Obama, HRC, and the DNC.   Sound ludicrous doesn’t it.  About as ludicrous as the Russia Collusion story.

We don’t even know it was Iran that is firing those missiles. Iran’s diplomatic grounds were the first ones to be attacked. The whole area is a powder keg, at least till they get some water and electricity to those people. I will say this. I don’t recall the protestors using missles on the other Embassies...  😄 

There is so much going on right now that “Peace in the Middle East” will continue to be a dream of the effected families there. Iran will never stop stirring the pot. How many have died over there in the name of religion? How many more will die. Perhaps if we drop some estrogen in the Tehran  water supplies it’ll take the fight out these angry Iranian mullahs. He added that "America is closing its consulate in Basra and calling its citizens to leave Iraq on the pretext that there is a threat to the consulate," saying that "this equation clearly reveals who stands with the Iraqi people."
