The Supreme Committee for Food Safety of Kuwait's General Authority for Food and Nutrition recommended in a statement Thursday lifting the ban on the import of all kinds of foodstuffs from Iraq.

BAGHDAD,— The central government has begun implementing its order customs checkpoints between the Kurdistan Region and other cities in Iraq.

Kirkuk Governorate said in a statement on Tuesday that the relevant authorities had been informed by Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi that the customs checkpoints on the Kirkuk-Erbil and Kirkuk-Sulaimani roads had been lifted.

Baghdad is expected to lift all the customs checkpoints between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, the statement read.

The central government had removed the customs checkpoint between Duhok and Mosul. NRT TV reported.

“All the employees at the checkpoint have left after taking their equipment,” the TV said.

No taxes had been levied on the goods on their way to central and southern Iraq from the Kurdistan Region.

The Kurdistan Region’s Directorate of Customs and Iraqi Customs Board reached a 27-point agreement to eliminate the checkpoints on November 11, nearly two months after they were put in place.

On September 22, two customs checkpoints were opened between Kirkuk and parts of the Kurdistan Region to levy taxes on goods entering the province from Erbil and Sulaimani.

ERBIL - The federal government decided on Tuesday to withdraw all employees from the customs checkpoints which had been built in the past few months between the Kurdistan Region and the provinces of Kirkuk and Nineveh.

The government in Baghdad established in September checkpoints on the highways of Kirkuk-Erbil, Kirkuk-Sulaimaniya, and Duhok-Mosul, a move which was considered "illegal" by many sides as the decision was made by the central government unilaterally.

The main aim of the checkpoints was to tax any truck drivers going through the customs. However, the Iraqi parliament voted in favor of removing them.

Removal of Iraq's domestic customs points to boost business, economy: Official

DUHOK (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq’s recent decision to remove its customs points between the Kurdistan Region and the rest of Iraq will boost business and trade movement inside the country with affordable prices for people, a Kurdish official said on Wednesday.

“It is really good news for businessmen because they are paying so much taxes and, as a result, their work has become very challenging in Mosul and other cities due to the high prices [of products],” Ayad Hussein, the head of Chambers of Commerce for Duhok, told Kurdistan 24.

He mentioned that over the past few months, businesspeople were being taxed twice: once at the Kurdistan Region-Turkey border crossing and the other between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq in Nineveh and Kirkuk provinces.

“The double taxes considerably raised the price of products imported to the Iraqi provinces where most people were buying,” Hussein said.

Following the tensions between Erbil and Baghdad as a result of the September 2017 independence referendum, the Iraqi government installed several customs points on the Kurdistan Region’s borders, including on roads between Erbil and Kirkuk, Sulaimani and Kirkuk, and Duhok and Mosul, to charge fees on products brought to the area from the semi-autonomous Kurdish region.

On Tuesday, the Iraqi Federal Government issued a letter to the customs point known as Faida in Nineveh, and both Shirawa and Laillan points in Kirkuk, instructing that work be suspended at all three sites.

These developments come after improved relations between Erbil and Baghdad, which spiraled to their lowest point in years after the Kurdistan Region’s independence referendum last year and the subsequent military takeover of areas disputed between the two administrations.

“The removal of the customs points will boost business, trade, and investment activities in the rest of Iraq,” Hussein stressed.

“Mosul, in particular, nowadays, needs almost everything. People in Nineveh can afford to buy products at lower prices when the decision is implemented,” he added.

Over the past few months, people in the disputed province of Kirkuk have repeatedly expressed their concerns about the customs points on the Erbil-Kirkuk, and Sulaimani-Kirkuk roads, complaining that the poor become the victims.

“I am Turkmen. You can ask other ethnic and religious groups as well; nobody is happy with these measures,” a shopkeeper in Kirkuk selling construction materials previously told Kurdistan 24.

“I am 59 years old and have no income. I work as a shopkeeper here. Some days, I only get IQD 5,000 (USD four) from my sales. How am I supposed to live with that? How can I afford the monthly rent for this shop? Business was already weak, and those customs points have made it even worse.”http://www.kurdistan24.net/en/news/659e1ace-691d-4c8c-9505-a756ea460da8
