The number of victims of the bloody Sadr City bombing increased

BAGHDAD - A car bomb exploded in Baghdad's Sadr City district on Wednesday, killing and injuring several people, a police source said.

At least 18 people were killed and more than 90 injured in an explosion in Baghdad's Sadr City district, police sources said.

Footage from the scene showed a destroyed car, a damaged building, people crying and mourning their loved ones.

A spokesman for the Interior Ministry said in a brief statement that the incident occurred as a result of the explosion of an ammunition depot and the security forces opened an investigation into the incident.

The source said the ammunition was stored in a mosque and that the blast occurred while moving from the mosque to a car parked nearby.

Earlier, the Interior Ministry said in a statement on state television that the explosion was a "terrorist" attack on civilians and did not give the authorities an explanation for the discrepancy between the statements.

Sadr City is the stronghold of cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, whose political bloc won parliamentary elections on May 12.

Parliament today ordered a recount of votes manually, a day after the prime minister said the election had seen "grave breaches".

In May, two bombings targeted offices of the Iraqi Communist Party in Sadr's bloc.

At least 18 people were killed and more than 90 were wounded in an explosion in Baghdad's Sadr City district on Wednesday, according to police sources.

The Interior Ministry has not revealed the exact number of casualties but it has confirmed there were fatalities and injuries. An Iraqi police source told Reuters that the death toll currently stands at 18.

Earlier statements issued by the Interior Ministry contained discrepancies that have not been explained by authorities yet.

An Interior Ministry spokesman said in a brief statement that the blast was the result of a detonation of an ammunition cache and that security forces have opened an investigation. The ammunition had been stored in a mosque and the explosion happened while it was being transferred to a car parked nearby, a police source said.

However, state television previously cited a ministry spokesman describing the explosion as "a terrorist aggression on civilians," which caused "martyrs and wounded."

Photos from the scene showed a destroyed car and building. There have also been reports in Middle East news outlets of a possible second explosion.

Sadr City is a stronghold of populist Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, whose political bloc won in the country’s parliamentary election last month. A full recount of votes in the election was ordered by parliament on Wednesday.

In May, two homemade bombs targeted the headquarters of the Iraqi Communist Party, which is part of Sadr's bloc.

Sadr ordered, according to the statement, "to form a committee to find out the reasons that led to this explosion, and the circumstances surrounding the Committee to submit its report to him within a maximum of three days."

At least 10 civilians were killed and more than 90 injured in an explosion that shook Sadr City, east of Baghdad, on Wednesday.

Ambulances rushed to the scene of the terrorist bombing to take the wounded to a nearby hospital for treatment and bodies to forensic medicine, while a security force cordoned off the incident.

Security expert to charge a figure close to the Sadrist movement behind the bombing of Sadr City
[Ayna-Baghdad]
accused security expert Hisham al-Hashemi close to the Sadrist movement behind the storage of explosives in Sadr City, east of Baghdad, which caused the explosion that took place yesterday, killing two martyrs and injuring 87 others.
Al-Hashemi said in a comment on the bombing, "I visited the site of the blast in Sadr City this morning, and there were dozens of people near the scene, and I saw no traces of rocket shrapnel, Katyusha rockets, heavy artillery shells, Mines developed into containers. "
"The confirmation of the residents and neighbors that the explosion once and not multiple, and this confirms that the explosion did not accumulate equipment that requires multiple explosions and scattered fragments and left unexploded remnants."
"The odor in the place confirms the presence of the substance of {Si4}, which is a mixture of four highly explosive materials, and in the form of bars, and sometimes in the form of a mixture of local chemicals and other agricultural used in the fertilizer industry, Enter into the manufacture of weapons and explosives material c4 ".
"According to this data, it is possible to say that the pile of explosive materials does not appear to belong to an armed faction, but rather to a person who sells weapons and legally prohibited materials, and is close to the Sadrist movement, thus exploiting these kinship and storing these explosive materials for trading without coordination. With the Sadrist movement, this type of storage is primitive and unsafe and the place of storage has no military value except commercial value.
"This forces the commander-in-chief of the armed forces to demand that all armed factions loyal to the government provide an inventory of the location of their stores and the details of each store, and also the commander-in-chief's decision to remove stores, camps and military offices outside the population centers."

Security expert Hisham al-Hashemi said on Thursday that the poor storage of explosive materials in Husseiniya is the cause of the explosion.

Al-Hashemi explained the reason for the existence of such explosions from time to time, is that there was no clear commitment to carry out the orders of the commander-in-chief of the armed forces in the past when he recommended the dismantling of terrorist headquarters for warehouses and stores of weapons and equipment.

Al-Hashimi confirmed that Abadi's decision confirms what he said in his previous decision, and what is important in confirming the implementation and this is evidence that there is no implementation of such decisions.

Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on Friday called for a nationwide disarmament campaign and announced his Baghdad stronghold would be first to hand in weaponry, just two days after an ammunition cache exploded there and killed 18 people.

Sadr, whose political bloc won Iraq's parliamentary election in May, called on all armed groups to give their weapons to the government and declared that Baghdad's Sadr City district would be a weapons-free area later this month.

"Everyone must obey the orders and not stand in the way of this initiative. Everyone should hand over their weapons without any discussion because the blood of Iraqis is more valuable to us than anything else," he told his supporters in a statement.

The move appeared to be aimed at easing tensions between Sadr and the government.

At least 18 people were killed and more than 90 wounded as a result of the detonation of an ammunition cache in Sadr City just hours after parliament mandated a nationwide recount of votes for the May election, a measure rejected by Sadr's bloc.

Sadr had urged his followers to remain calm after the explosion and ordered his office to investigate the incident.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, whose bloc came in third, said storing ammunition in a residential area was a crime and ordered the Interior Ministry to investigate the incident and take legal action against those who had done so.

Baghdad%20blast%20Reuters.JPGAt least 18 people were killed after the detonation of an ammunitions cache in Sadr City on Wednesday (Reuters)

Some of Sadr's political opponents had suggested the munitions belonged to his Saraya al-Salam (Peace Companies) militia.

The Interior Ministry released a statement on Friday thanking Sadr for his announcement.

Sadr, a nationalist who opposes the involvement of both the United States and Iran, scored a surprise victory in the 12 May vote by promising to fight corruption and improve services.

Parliament passed a law on Wednesday ordering a nationwide manual recount of votes in the election, after Abadi cited serious violations.

The move could undermine Sadr, who in the past has mobilised tens of thousands of followers to protest against government policies. One of his top aides expressed concerns that some parties were trying to sabotage the cleric's victory.

Sadr has been viewed as a wildcard in Iraq's turbulent politics, which is often driven by sectarian interests.

His militia, previously known as the Mehdi Army, staged two violent uprisings against US occupation forces after the invasion. Iraqi and US officials described him at the time as the biggest security threat in Iraq.

He stressed on Friday that the disarmament campaign should be directed at all armed groups and warned that his followers must not be its sole target.

"The Sadrist bloc must not be targeted using this initiative or else there will be negative consequences," Sadr said.

"It must also be enacted upon official security forces that use weapons without permission or mercy; these forces are still young and need rehabilitation," he said, referring to the mostly Iran-backed militias collectively known as Popular Mobilisation Units (PMU), which played a major role in defeating the Islamic State (IS) group.

C’mon, really ! That entire city is honeycombed with subterranean passageways. Sure thing everyone: we’ll be the first to give up ALL our weapons. We’ll just stash a few things underground no one will ever know about: that is until we see the ballon go up and we’re the only ones with - oh surprise - look what we have here.

Sadr, whose political bloc won Iraq's parliamentary election in May, declared Baghdad's Sadr City district would be a weapons-free area later this month.

Iraqi cleric-turned-politician Muqtada al-Sadr on Friday called for a nationwide disarmament initiative, days after an ammunitions cache exploded in Baghdad killing 18 people.

The explosion happened during the detonation of an ammunitions cache in Sadr City on Wednesday, hours after parliament ordered a recount of votes for the May election.

"Everyone must obey the orders and not stand in the way of this initiative. Everyone should hand over their weapons without any discussion because the blood of Iraqis is more valuable to us than anything else," Sadr told his supporters in a statement.

Sadr, whose political bloc won Iraq's parliamentary election in May, declared Baghdad's Sadr City district would be a weapons-free area later this month.

The disarmament campaign must target all groups, he added, and not just groups linked to Sadr.

"The Sadrist bloc must not be targeted using this initiative or else there will be negative consequences," Sadr said.

"It must also be enacted upon official security forces that use weapons without permission or mercy; these forces are still young and need rehabilitation," he said, referring to the mostly Iran-backed Shia militias collectively known as Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF).

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, whose bloc came in third, said storing ammunition in a residential area was a crime and ordered the Interior Ministry to investigate the incident and take legal action against those who had done so.

Some of Sadr's political opponents had suggested the ammunitions cache belonged to his Saraya al-Salam militia.

The Interior Ministry released a statement on Friday thanking Sadr for his announcement.

Confusion has gripped Iraq since the vote won by Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's electoral alliance with communists, even with negotiations to form a new government underway.

Since last month's victory of anti-establishment electoral lists, long-time political figures pushed out by Iraqi voters hoping for change have been calling for a recount.

The head of the parliamentary security and defense committee warned the governor of Zamilion Sunday of exploiting an organization calling for the government and political parties to be preoccupied with political conflicts and strife and seeking interests and spoils, especially in the constitutional vacuum .

"There will be a security breach in the capital as the current government ends, because parties, blocs and officials are busy looking for positions and gains, leaving the citizen vulnerable to al-Daheshi terror and under the guise of armed gangs," Zamili said in a June 17, 2018 publication on his Facebook page. "He said.

"It will be because of the proliferation of weapons, false identities, shaded cars and the threat of people, especially the better-off merchants and contractors by the weak souls."

While urging Zamili, everyone to take responsibility in accelerating the formation of the government and renounce differences and put the interest of Iraq and the Iraqis before partisan interests and personal and factional .

He called on the security services to carry out their duties and to move away from the parties and their conflicts, to be fully prepared and resolved, and to remain the safety valve, stressing the need to "limit the weapons to the state ."
