The Deputy Special Representative urged the Government of Iraq to adopt reforms in national legislation to enable trials of such international crimes and to consider the establishment of a competent court to try perpetrators in accordance with the principles of international criminal law.

For his part, welcomed the President of the Republic Fawad Masum on the occasion of the vote of the Security Council at the end of last year, the adoption of resolution No. 2379 to hold accountable gangs calling for crimes committed in Iraq, especially those amounting to the level of war crimes and crimes against humanity and genocide.

After its control of the city of Mosul in mid-2014, Da'ash organized large-scale military campaigns targeting ethnic and religious minorities in Nineveh province, during which it carried out mass killings, kidnappings and rapes, and destroyed religious shrines.
