Federal Court approves election results

The Federal Supreme Court of Iraq announced on Sunday its ratification of the results of the elections of the Iraqi Council of Representatives held on 12 May last.

"The Federal Supreme Court held its session this morning in the presence of its full members and considered the request to ratify the final results of the elections of the Iraqi Council of Representatives," the court's spokesman, Ayas al-Samuk, said in a statement.

The statement added: "The court checked the names of the Independent Electoral Commission of the elections and its letter dated 17/8/2018. After checking and deliberating on the names and objections to some of them, the Federal Supreme Court issued its decision this afternoon to ratify the names received, Reviews ».

The elections were held on 12 May, but the Parliament ordered a recount by hand after "serious violations" were recorded during the electronic voting.

Manual counting and counting were done in part. The final results were announced more than a week ago, but there was no significant change in the number of winning coalition seats.

Moqtada al-Sadr's "Sadr" coalition retained the lead (54 seats), and secondly, as in the preliminary results, the Fatah (47 seats) coalition led by Hadi al-Amiri, close to Iran.

The third coalition was Al-Nasr (42 seats), led by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who aspires to win a second term.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (25 seats) and the State of Law Coalition (also 25 seats) were led by Maliki.

(19 seats), the National Union of Kurdistan (18 seats), alliance of "decision" led by Osama Najafi (14 seats).

The results of counting and manual counting in 13 of Iraq's 18 governorates are largely identical with the initial results.

The manual recount was controversial in Iraq, while many Iraqis ruled out that the process would result in any change in results.

This comes as the politicians are competing intensively consultations to announce the formation of the largest bloc through which the next prime minister will be chosen.

Under the political consensus in post-2003 Iraq, the choice of prime minister will be from the Shiite Arabs and the president from the Kurds, while the speaker of the House of Representatives will be Sunni Arabs.

Thanks buti. , the ratification makes the results formal and lawmakers now have to gather and elect a speaker , then president and finally prime minister and cabinet within 90 days... it's been quite a delay tactic by whomever for whatever reasons and nothing is really different from the May results ... cheers dv

Iraqi Supreme Court ratifies May election results

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq’s Supreme Court has ratified the results of the May 12 parliamentary election, its spokesman said on Sunday, setting in motion a 90-day constitutional deadline for the winning parties to form a government.

May 17, 2018. REUTERS/Alaa al-Marjani/Files

Parliament in June ordered a nationwide manual recount of the results, which were tallied electronically, after a government report said there were widespread violations and blamed the electoral commission.

Yet the recount showed little had changed from the initial results as populist Shi’ite Muslim cleric Moqtada al-Sadr retained his lead, positioning him to play a central role in forming the country’s next government.

“The Federal Supreme Court issued on the afternoon of Aug. 19, 2018, its decision to ratify the names received,” its spokesman Iyas al-Samouk said in a statement.

The ratification makes the results formal and lawmakers now have to gather and elect a speaker, then president and finally a prime minister and cabinet within 90 days.

The political uncertainty over the make-up of the new government has raised tensions at a time when public impatience is growing over poor basic services, unemployment and the slow pace of rebuilding after a three-year war with the Islamic State militant group.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s government, now serving in a caretaker capacity, welcomed the court’s announcement.

“The government welcomes the decision by Iraq’s Federal Supreme Court to certify the results of the May 12 parliamentary election. This milestone paves the way for the convening of the first session of the new parliament, and subsequently the formation of the new government,” it said in a statement.

The first session of the new parliament is likely to be postponed...………………..

Of course, we couldn't expect them to do anything quickly. Following in the footsteps of the previous bunch of fools.

They only had 100 days to get ready.  Let's hope Sadr administration puts an end to this foolishness once they get started.

Likely to be Postponed - absolutely: wouldn’t want to rush into anything. People begging and crying out for relief and the first thing, even before they’ve sat their happy azzez down. . . They’re going to Postpone the vet 1st session.

I hope this doesn’t happen - folks are really ticked off right now, and stupid foot dragging BS like this ain’t gonna sit well.
