Abadi and US presidential envoy discuss developments in Iraq

Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi discussed with US envoy to the international coalition Brett McGork the latest developments in the political situation in Iraq.

A statement from Ebadi's office said that the latter lost a discussion with MacGorek on Wednesday "to promote bilateral relations between the two countries and discuss political developments."

McGowork's visit to Baghdad comes at a time when Iraqi politicians are trying to form a coalition government after a parliamentary election marred by accusations of fraud, as came at a time when most of the cities in Iraq, especially the south, popular protests left dead and wounded.

The statement said the two sides also discussed "valuing the steps taken by the Iraqi government and its efforts to improve services and economic reform."

Washington has expressed its support for the demands of the Iraqi protesters, and supported the right of the Iraqi people to assemble peacefully and express their views, expressing regret for the victims between demonstrators and security forces.

The US embassy in Baghdad said in a statement that it "supports the right of the Iraqi people to peacefully assemble and express their views." It also expressed its support for the Iraqi government's statement that it "protects the right of its citizens to demonstrate in a peaceful manner. We regret the lives that have been lost between demonstrators and security forces. "

The embassy also expressed "its readiness to support the Iraqi people and government in their efforts related to economic reform and fighting corruption, and in creating jobs and providing services that the Iraqi people deserve."

Hope Brett lights a fire 🔥 under their butts. Probably come to nothing as they won’t “ allow outside influences “ to interfere with their policies.

Maybe the IMF shutting off the $$$$$ tap squeezes them like a grape.

Much Appreciated Yota, this sounds good but wouldn’t you want Sadr to be apart of those meetings, I would think since he will play a huge part in this. You would want him to agree on everything, which I do believe he does to allow Albadi 2 more year term.

US special presidential envoy Brett McGurk visited KDP leader Masoud Barzani and CDJ leader Barham Salih separately in the Kurdistan Region on Wednesday to get updates on the formation of a new Iraqi government, the war on terror, and political stability, Rudaw has said.

Barzani welcomed McGurk, accompanied by the newly-appointed US consul general to Erbil Steven Fagin and advisors, in Pirmam on Wednesday, according to Barzani’s office.

McGurk began by sharing his condolences on the anniversary of the Baathists’ massacre of the Barzanis, and with the families of the fallen in the war against ISIS and the latest casualty in the attack against Erbil’s governorate building.

He reiterated that routing ISIS doesn’t constitute the end of terror, noting that the US takes pride in the continued collaboration and partnership it has with the Peshmerga.

McGurk said the war against terror has evolved into a new phase with a new form, according to Barzani’s office.

The two also discussed Iraq’s conditions following the contentious May 12th election and government formation efforts.

“Barzani reiterated that the political process needs to be rebuilt in all of its details on the three principles of partnership, consensus and balance,” he stated.

Barzani asked that a specific timeline be drawn for the implementation of the three principles “so that all the components feel that they are partners in Iraq’s political process, and the government should be formed in light of these three principles,” added Barzani.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) -

American writer: Trump 3 strategies to intervene in Iraq

482018124945f07012947.jpg

NRT

US journalist Sean McGowan called on the US administration to take part in Iraq's political process after the elections, warning that abandoning Iraq could lead to instability .

The writer said in an article published on the site, "National Interst" under the title "do not give up Iraq," that the US policy towards Iraq since the withdrawal of troops in 2011 focused on defeating the organization is calling, without paying attention to local Iraqi policies, which he considered a mistake .

"The Iraqi elections on 12 May represent an opportunity for US participation that will contribute to addressing the three strategic concerns of the United States: defeating an oppressive organization, countering Iranian influence in the region and reducing regional instability," he said.

"After the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq in 2011, the former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki began to turn government institutions into sectarian for Shiites, and this is in the security forces, which increased the proportion of Shiites from 55% in 2010 to 95% by 2014 .

"The fact that the US administration supported Maliki's presidency in 2006, and thus unintentionally contributed to the emergence of an encouraging organization, forced US officials to strategically scrutinize their choice of new candidates, " he said.

The writer continued that "the opposition within the Maliki government was a key factor in the decision of the administration of former President Barack Obama not to renew the security agreement with Iraq, and therefore the exit of US forces ."

"The real problem is that the composition of the new government will affect whether the United States can continue to partner with the Iraqi security forces in its war against a sympathetic organization, so the next government that may refuse military cooperation with the Americans could threaten the gains made by the Iraqi army with the support of (Led by the United States) in a war against the organization since 2014. "

As for Iran, "Iraq has a strategic choice, especially with the imposition of US sanctions on Tehran, which will make Iraq a conduit for its trade ."

"Although Sadr is not the best choice because of his historical ties with Iran and his coup against them to become Saudi Arabia and the UAE, many analysts see him as better than groups calling for rapprochement with Iran, " he said. .

"The Americans still have the opportunity to engage and support the process of forming the new government, ensuring that there is no return to a pre-emptive organization and limiting Iranian influence in Iraq, " McGovern concluded .

"Major General 30 has often detained people without warrants or fraudulent orders, and imposed arbitrary customs duties at checkpoints," she said.
According to the ministry, "local people claim that the 30th Brigade is responsible for committing horrendous crimes, including physical intimidation, extortion, theft, kidnapping and rape."
      Nofal Hammadi Sultan
