Syria conflict: Israel blamed for attack on airfield

Satellite image showing T4/Tiyas airbase in central Syria (2018)Image copyrightGOOGLE/DIGITALGLOBE Image captionA satellite image showing the T4/Tiyas airbase in central Syria

The Syrian government and its ally Russia have blamed Israel for a deadly attack on a Syrian military airport.

Monday's attack hit the Tiyas airbase, known as T4, near the city of Homs. Observers say 14 people were killed.

Israel, which has previously hit Syrian targets, has not commented. Syria initially blamed the US for the strike.

The incident comes amid international alarm over an alleged chemical attack on a Syrian rebel-held town. The US and France had threatened to respond.

US President Donald Trump said there would be a "big price to pay" for the alleged chemical attack in Douma, in the Eastern Ghouta region, near the capital Damascus. He branded Syria's President Bashar al-Assad an "animal".

But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said accusations that Mr Assad is behind the attack were a "provocation".

Moscow favoured an "honest investigation" of such incidents but opposed apportioning blame without any proof, he added.

Meanwhile, Ahmet Uzumcu, head the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, expressed "grave concern" about the alleged attack. The OPCW is currently gathering information about the possible use of chemical weapons.

Could Israel be involved?

Syrian state news agency Sana, quoting a military source, reported that air defences had repelled an Israeli missile attack on T4, saying the missiles were fired by Israeli F15 jets in Lebanese airspace.

Map of T4

Russia's defence ministry said that, of eight missiles, five were shot down and three reached the western part of the aerodrome.

Israel rarely acknowledges carrying out strikes, but has admitted attacking targets in Syria dozens of times since 2012. Its heaviest air strike on Syria, in February this year, included targeting the T4 air base.

That followed an incursion by an Iranian drone into Israel and the shooting down by Syrian air defences of an Israeli F16 fighter jet.

Israel has said it will not allow Iran, its arch-foe, to set up bases in Syria or operate from there, something Israel considers a major threat.

The Israeli military said Iran and its Revolutionary Guards had long been active in the T4 base, and were using it to transfer weapons, including to Lebanese Shia militant group Hezbollah, an enemy of Israel.

They also said the drone had been launched from the base.

UK-based monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said that fighters of various nationalities - meaning Iranians or members of Iranian-backed Shia militias - were among the 14 dead at the base.

Complicated equation

By Jonathan Marcus, BBC defence and diplomatic correspondent

This attack could be part of Israel's growing effort to contain Iran's military build-up in Syria and to interrupt the supply of advanced Iranian missiles to its Lebanese Shia ally, Hezbollah.

Any Israeli operation would have been closely monitored by Russian air defence radars in Syria. There is also a telephone hotline between the Israelis and the Russian headquarters in Syria.

So far Moscow has done nothing to interfere with Israel's air operations.

But the presence of Russia's air defences in Syria certainly complicates the strategic equation as Western governments ponder their response to the recent chemical attack.

Presentational grey line

Is there a connection to the Douma attack?

Mr Trump and France's President Emmanuel Macron issued a joint statement on Sunday vowing to "co-ordinate a strong, joint response" to the alleged chemical attack.

But US officials said America did not launch the overnight strike.

"At this time, the Department of Defense is not conducting air strikes in Syria," the Pentagon said in a statement.

p063r45n.jpg
"However, we continue to closely watch the situation and support the ongoing diplomatic efforts to hold those who use chemical weapons, in Syria and otherwise, accountable."

France also issued a denial.

Sana initially called the reported missile strike on the Tiyas airfield a "suspected US attack", but later dropped the reference to the US.

In April 2017, the US fired 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Syria's Shayrat military airfield in response to a chemical weapons attack on a different rebel-held town, Khan Sheikhoun.

What happened in Douma?

Medical sources say dozens of people were killed on Saturday in the attack on Douma, in the Eastern Ghouta region.

One video, recorded by rescue workers known as the White Helmets, shows a number of men, women and children lying lifeless inside a house, many with foam at their mouths.

However, it has not been possible to verify independently what actually happened, or the actual number of dead.

p063p3rp.jpg

The UN Security Council is expected to discuss the crisis on Monday.

Both Syria and Russia deny a chemical attack took place, and have reached an evacuation deal with the Jaish al-Islam rebels who hold Douma.

Moscow said military operations there had been halted. Under the deal, 100 buses are said to be moving 8,000 fighters and 40,000 of their relatives out of the battered town. Hostages who had been held by the rebels are being set free.

The development means pro-government forces have now taken full control of Eastern Ghouta.

Analysts say this is President Assad's biggest military success since the fall of Aleppo in 2016. It follows a weeks-long government offensive in which more than 1,600 people were killed.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard decided to transfer the family of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to the capital Tehran, in light of the intention of the United States to strike the Assad regime because of its use of chemical weapons in Syria.

"There is a state of panic and fear among the leaders of the Revolutionary Guards and their families in Syria," the news agency quoted the news agency as saying.

"The Guards moved the families of the leaders from Syria to Iran late on Monday," the sources said.

The sources said that "among the families that will be transferred to the capital Tehran, the family of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and it will arrive before the end of this week."

She pointed out that "17 military commanders of the Revolutionary Guards were killed, the day before yesterday (Sunday) in the attack launched by Israel on the base of Tifour in the city of Homs in central Syria."

US officials said the United States is considering a collective military response to a suspected poison gas attack in Syria, while several experts have listed key facilities as potential targets.

The White House and the US Department of Defense and State Department refused to comment on specific options, or whether military action was possible.

Experts expected retaliation strikes, if any, to focus on facilities linked to previous reports of chemical weapons attacks in Syria.

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he was not aware of any decision to retaliate, but said any plans for a possible attack would focus on targets linked to the Syrian chemical weapons program while he would try to avoid anything that would cause toxic gas to spread in civilian areas.

"The eastern Mediterranean is devastated by the USS Donald Cook missile and can take part in any strike on

US President Donald Trump earlier accused Russia and Iran of backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on allegations of a chemical attack in the eastern city of Douma, killing 40 people.

Trump said Washington had many military options to respond to the alleged chemical attack in Syria. He said on Monday that he would make a decision on the US response in this regard in a day or two, and vowed to punish those responsible for the attack, did not exclude the responsibility of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

For its part, Moscow denied all information on the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian military. The Russian Foreign Ministry said the false news was intended to defend terrorists and justify the possibility of a military strike against Syria from abroad.

Well if he is out of the country then get as many of the syrian officials that were picked at least 6 years ago to start that interim government and make sure they move into the palaces and take up residence in the parliament buildings in damascus. This clearly states that he did not go to iran for a pleasure trip, the puke is trying to save his arse from being killed by u.s. strikes, and by doing so has really abandoned his country. Maybe that is why we havent really seen air strikes just yet from the u.s. Trump prolly said get out or you will die. ;)

Russia warns America against military action in Syria
(International: Al-Furat News) Russia urged the United States to avoid military action against Syria in response to an alleged chemical attack in Douma, in the eastern basin near the capital Damascus.
"I will again ask you to refrain from the plans you are currently working on," said Vasily Nibenzia, Russia's envoy to the United Nations.
The Russian delegate warned Washington that it would "take responsibility" for any "illegal military adventure" it carries out.
But Western leaders say they have agreed to work together to target those responsible for the alleged chemical attack in Douma.
French President Emmanuel Macaron said any strikes would target chemical facilities belonging to the Syrian government.
The Security Council session on Tuesday saw a split as no agreement was reached on opening an investigation into the alleged attack.
Russia vetoed a US-drafted draft resolution, while China abstained and another Moscow draft resolution failed to win support.
The draft resolution called for an independent investigation into allegations that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government forces carried out the suspected chemical attack on the opposition town of Douma in the eastern Ghouta region.
The Syrian government, which receives military support from Russia, denies being behind any chemical attack.
A team from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is due to visit Syria "soon" to determine whether banned weapons have been used in Duma.
But the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will not seek to determine who is responsible for the attack.
The Security Council meeting is the latest in a series of confrontations between Russia and the United States, and has seen harsh exchanges between the two sides.
He accused the United States of trying to "pass this resolution" as a "pretext" to justify military action.
The Russian delegate said "
US envoy Nicky Hayley responded as "mockery".
"Russia has shattered the credibility of the council," Hayley said.
US President Donald Trump pledged a "strong" response and spoke of many military options.
Trump canceled his first official trip to Latin America to focus on Syria, and Defense Secretary James Matisse canceled a travel plan, suggesting that the US response could include a military operation greater than a limited strike.
In April, Trump fired dozens of cruise missiles at a Syrian government air base from US naval vessels in the Mediterranean after a sarin gas attack killed more than 80 people in an opposition-controlled town.
It was the first direct US military action against Syrian government forces.
Since the announcement of the latest alleged attack, which took place on Saturday, Washington is in talks with Britain and France, suggesting a possible coordinated Western military action.
The American destroyer USS Donald Cook, armed with guided missiles, also moved into the Mediterranean

Russia Threatens To Shoot Down U.S. Missiles, Target Launch Sites In Any Syria Strike

Russian Ambassador in Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin, in Beirut, Lebanon, last year. In a television interview Zasypkin warned that Russia would "shoot down" any American missiles launched at Syria.

Bilal Hussein/AP

Russia's ambassador to Lebanon has warned that his country will shoot down any U.S. missiles fired at Syria in a punitive strike on the Damascus regime over its alleged use of chemical weapons.

"If there is a strike by the Americans, then ... the missiles will be downed and even the sources from which the missiles were fired," Alexander Zasypkin told Hezbollah's al-Manar TV Tuesday evening, speaking in Arabic, according to Reuters.

NPR's Lama Al-Arian, reporting from Beirut, reports that Zaspykin said he was quoting Russian President Vladimir Putin. The threat applies not only to the missiles, but to their launch sites, she says.

However, Zaspykin said that a clash "should be ruled out" and that Russia was "ready to hold negotiations."

His remarks follow Russia's veto of a U.S. draft Security Council resolution calling for an independent investigation to establish with certainty if Syria used poison gas against civilians in Douma, a rebel-held suburb of Damascus, last week.

Syria has denied that it used poison gas.

President Trump on Tuesday warned the U.S. was prepared to take "forceful" action. "We have a lot of options, militarily," he said.

Russia joined the Syrian civil war to fight alongside Assad in 2015. Although its Security Council veto was expected, Nikki Haley, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, said Moscow's decision to stand with its ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, amounted to "protecting a monster over the lives of the Syrian people."

Earlier, Russia's U.N. envoy, Vasily Nebenzia cautioned the U.S. to "refrain from the plans that you're currently developing," saying Washington would "bear responsibility" for any "illegal military adventure."

In a further sign that military action may be imminent, Eurocontrol, the European air-traffic control agency, issued a warning on Wednesday to commercial airliners flying in the eastern Mediterranean.

"Due to the possible launch of air strikes into Syria with air-to-ground and/or cruise missiles within the next 72 hours, and the possibility of intermittent disruption of radio navigation equipment, due consideration needs to be taken when planning flight operations in the Eastern Mediterranean/Nicosia FIR area," it said, referring to the designated airspace, Reuters reports.

In the alleged poison gas attack in Douma on Saturday, pro-opposition rescue workers and doctors tell NPR's Ruth Sherlock that 42 people were killed – the same number as reported by the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Doctors have said that the symptoms presented by suspected victims of the attack are consistent with chlorine gas. In the past, the U.S. and its Western allies have accused Syria of using Sarin gas against civilians, a charge Damascus denies.

Meanwhile, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has said the Syrian and Russian governments have invited it to conduct a fact-finding mission on the ground in Syria to "establish facts surrounding the allegations of the use of toxic chemicals, reportedly chlorine, for hostile purposes in the Syrian Arab Republic."

The world is braced for war tonight after Theresa May reportedly ordered submarines to move within missile range of Syria.

The Prime Minister will summon top ministers to Downing Street on Thursday to discuss Britain's response to the Syria chemical attack.

She convened the urgent meeting of the Cabinet four full days before Parliament returns from its Easter break.

And today Mrs May gave her strongest statement yet laying the blame for a deadly chemical attack at Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad's door.

Donald Trump demanded Assad's Russian backers "get ready" for missiles - while the White House refused to rule out direct conflict with Russia.

And Mrs May, who Trump wants to team up with in his response to the attack, said: "All the indications are that the Syrian regime was responsible."

Speaking after visiting a Sikh centre in Walsall, the PM declared: “The use of chemical weapons cannot go unchallenged.”

Tonight a Whitehall source told the Daily Telegraph any action would happen before MPs return from their Easter break on Monday.

That could scupper any attempt to hold a Parliamentary vote on military action - a key demand by Jeremy Corbyn.

The Telegraph was told: "We are moving subs in, we are doing everything necessary operationally to do that.

“If any action is going to happen it is going to happen before Monday because once you start having a debate about it, it will be very difficult for Number 10 to do anything.”

The Telegraph reported Britain has three Astute Class or three Trafalgar Class submarines it could send towards Syria.

Astute Class are the largest and most powerful attack submarines in the Royal Navy and their Tomahawk IV missiles have a range of more than 1,000 miles.

Donald Trump tonight once again blamed Russia and Syria for the attack.

Asked if the US was prepared for the possibility of "direct military engagement with Russia”, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders replied: "All options are on the table."

Asked if the US could "target Russian assets or personnel in Syria directly”, she said: "We’re maintaining we have a number of options and all of those options are still on the table.

"Final decisions haven’t been made yet.”

Earlier the US President had blasted Vladimir Putin for supporting "Gas Killing Animal" Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in an extraordinary Twitter threat.

Moscow had vowed to attack any planes and ships that launched strikes on Syria.

Its ambassador to Lebanon, Alexander Zasypkin, said: “If there is a strike by the Americans then ... the missiles will be downed and even the sources from which the missiles were fired.”

So Trump appeared to pave the way for air strikes, tweeting: "Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!'".

UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn demanded MPs get a vote in Parliament on any military action.

He said today: "Parliament should always be given a say on military action.

"That’s a case that I’ve made going back many, many years in parliament.

"Obviously the situation is very serious, obviously there has to be, now, a demand for a political process to end the war in Syria.

"We cannot risk an escalation even further than it’s gone already."

When asked if she would recall parliament, Mrs May declined to directly answer the question.

Instead she said she was working with allies to prevent and deter the use of chemical weapons.

Several Tory MPs, including Andrew Percy who opposed military action in 2013, said they would back military action now.

Tory Sarah Wollaston added: “It’s time to act.”

But Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable said: "There must be a debate and vote in the House of Commons ahead of any military action."

Labour left-wing shadow cabinet minister Richard Burgon added: "At no point in my life have I been as genuinely worried for the future of our world.

"Any military intervention could escalate rapidly. Those beating the drums of war need to step back and let the OPCW do their job."

The World Health Organization confirmed 43 people died in the Douma attack on Saturday from "symptoms consistent with exposure to highly toxic chemicals".

The figure, specifically for those whose symptoms were linked to chemical exposure, is slightly lower than the 70 reported dead overall previously.

Earlier Russia announced it will send troops tomorrow into Douma, the Syrian town hit by Saturday's chemical attack.

Russian military police will enter Douma to "maintain law and order", state news agency TASS reported - triggering a fresh countdown.

It came just as the 48 hour period Donald Trump said he would use to decide on action expired.

Time is ticking because both sides fear the other could try to destroy evidence of the attack, which left dozens dead including children on Saturday.

But tonight the White House and Downing Street sources both insisted there was no set timescale for taking action.

The world chemical weapons watchdog will hold a special session on Monday, Reuters reported.

US-led calls for an wider inquiry into the attack were vetoed by Russia at the United Nations last night.

Russia claimed any US airstrike could be a bid to destroy evidence of the chemical attack - and suggested it was faked by Syria's White Helmets volunteers.

Meanwhile, it appeared Trump’s tweet caught the UK and French Government by surprise.

The US, Britain and France were understood to be seeking to carefully gather further evidence of whether the Assad regime was behind Saturday’s attack on the rebel-held town of Douma, in Eastern Ghouta near Damascus.

The war of words between the US and Russia sparked growing concerns that the Syrian civil war could spiral into a broader conflict.

General Sir Richard Barrons, who led UK Joint Forces Command from 2013 to 2016, warned: “I hope the ambassador has chosen his words very carefully.

"What he is actually saying is if the US and allies decide to strike against Syrian chemical weapons and delivery aircraft, not only are they going to try to shoot down the missiles, which they are capable of doing but won’t be with total success.

"But by saying ‘launch platforms’, he’s saying they are going to try and sink ships, sink submarines and shoot aircraft out of the sky.

"That’s war.”

Baghdad News -

MOSCOW (AP) -

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his hope that "the language of the mind will finally prevail" in international relations, which is currently "further chaotic", in the face of growing tension with Western countries.

"The situation in the world is worrying," Putin said in a speech to foreign diplomats broadcast by Russian television.

"The world is witnessing more chaos. Nevertheless, we hope that the language of the mind will finally prevail and that international relations will take a constructive approach and that the world order will become more stable and clear. "

Putin's comments come amidst a confrontation between the West and East, which in recent weeks has been fueled by tensions over the case of the former Russian spy and a presumed chemical attack in Syria that Westerners accused the Syrian army of committing.

US President Donald Trump said in a tweet on Twitter that relations between Washington and Moscow "are worse today than ever, even during the Cold War."

Assad adviser: Syria consults with its allies on US threats

Khandan -

Buthaina Shaaban, media advisor to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, said the Syrian government is consulting with its allies on US threats of military action and that they have options.

Buthaina Shaaban said in an interview with Al-Mayadin television channel that the Syrian government and its main ally Russia had made preparations after Israel's strike on Sunday of the air force base near Homs.

She added that the West is waging a "psychological war" after the defeat of the militants in the eastern Ghouta, referring to what it described as the contradiction in the American statements between the White House and the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs.

"The consultations are continuing between Syria's allies and they will not let things go as Washington wants," she said.

Baghdad News -

New York - AP

appealed to the Secretary - General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres on Wednesday, the five permanent members of the Security Council «avoid the exit situation in Syria control», expressing «deep concern regarding the current impasse», with the increasing likelihood of a Western military strike To the Syrian regime.

"Today, I have contacted the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the Security Council (the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain) to reiterate my deep concern over the dangers of the current impasse," Gutierrez said in a statement.

"I am following closely the developments in the Security Council, and I am sorry that the Council has not yet been able to reach agreement on this issue," he said. "Let us not forget that, ultimately, our efforts must be focused on ending the terrible suffering of the Syrian people."

Bolivia has called for a Security Council meeting on the threat of military action against Syria, diplomats said on Tuesday.

Bolivia, a non-permanent member of the Security Council known for its support for the Russian position, said the closed meeting would deal with "the latest escalation in the rhetoric about Syria and the threat of unilateral steps."

Diplomats said the meeting would take place immediately after a meeting to discuss efforts to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and a decision at 10 pm (GMT GMT).

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders dismissed Russia's claim that the attack in Douma might have been fabricated, noting that "Trump is still considering military options to respond to the attack."

"The intelligence certainly gives a different picture," she said, adding that "the president holds the lion and the Russians responsible for the chemical weapons attack."

It is reported that Trump is considering the option of launching missile strikes against facilities linked to the production and delivery of chlorine, sarin or similar compounds similar to sarin gas.

However, a large number of sensitive Syrian military installations are protected by Russian missile defense systems or are located within bases where Russian, Iranian and Syrian military personnel are present.

Sanders did not rule out the possibility of direct military engagement with Russia, which means a confrontation between the two nuclear powers.

Russia on Tuesday vetoed a US draft resolution to establish an investigation mechanism on the use of chemical weapons in Syria, while Washington and its allies failed to draft two alternative resolutions put forward by Moscow, deepening divisions among council members over the Syrian conflict, And the most striking features of a Western military strike imminent to Damascus.

US President Donald Trump warned Russia not to continue supporting the Syrian regime, saying that "new and smart missiles" would soon hit Syria, prompting an escalation of danger between the two powers on the grounds that Washington and its allies accused the Syrian regime of launching a chemical attack on Duma, the last stronghold of the opposition. East of the capital and Damascus and its allies Moscow and Tehran denied the accusation.

"The situation in Syria is not simple but stable, there are contacts and there is a certain degree of understanding. I think things will be resolved in civilized ways and things will not hit," Shamanov told reporters.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Wednesday that final decisions on a possible strike on Syria had not been made and some options were still on the table. And revealed that the United States does not rule out the possibility of strikes against Russian forces in Syria during the planned military response against Syria.

The leader of the Sadrist movement, Moqtada al-Sadr, said the region would be dragged into the abyss after the US president announced that his country was bombing Syria.
"We will not stand idly by if our sanctities are endangered in Syria," Sadr said, commenting on Trump's comments.
"We are ready to protect the western borders in order to keep the US occupation of Syria away," Sadr told the Iraqi government.

"There Wasn't A Single Corpse": Russia Claims 'White Helmets' Staged Syria Chemical Attack

Profile picture for user Tyler Durden

Russia claims that the reported chemical attack in Syria last Sunday was staged by the "white helmets," a US-funded NGO lauded by mainstream media for their humanitarian work, while long-suspected of performing less-than humanitarian deeds behind the curtain

Speaking with EuroNews, Russia's ambassador to the EU, Vladimir Chizov, said "Russian military specialists have visited this region, walked on those streets, entered those houses, talked to local doctors and visited the only functioning hospital in Douma, including its basement where reportedly the mountains of corpses pile up. There was not a single corpse and even not a single person who came in for treatment after the attack."

"But we've seen them on the video!" responds EuroNews correspondent Andrei Beketov.

"There was no chemical attack in Douma, pure and simple," responds Chizov. "We've seen another staged event. There are personnel, specifically trained - and you can guess by whom - amongst the so-called White Helmets, who were already caught in the act with staged videos."

Russia said it sent experts in radiological, chemical and biological warfare - along with medics, in order to inspect the Eastern Ghouta city of Douma where the attack is said to have taken place.

Russia's Defense Ministry said in a statement that the experts "found no traces of the use of chemical agents," following a search of the sites, adding "All these facts show... that no chemical weapons were used in the town of Douma, as it was claimed by the White Helmets."

All the accusations brought by the White Helmets, as well as their photos… allegedly showing the victims of the chemical attack, are nothing more than a yet another piece of fake news and an attempt to disrupt the ceasefire,” said the Russian Reconciliation Center.

In a statement to the UN Security Council on April 9, Russia's UN Ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia outlined Russia's position on the timeline of the attack in Douma, as well as the Western response after the White Helmets reported that chemical agents were used:

On April 6, the new head of Jaysh al-Islam, following instructions of sponsors, derailed the evacuation of a party of fighters from Douma and resumed the rocket and mortar fire against residential areas in Damascus. The firing targeted [indistinct name of four areas]. According to official information, eight people died. 37 civilians were wounded. Unfortunately, we failed to see statements from Western capitals condemning the shelling of a historical district of Damascus. The following day, April 7, fighters accused the Syrian authorities of dropping barrel bombs with toxic substances. At the same time, diversions were being mixed up. It was either called sarin, chlorine, or a mix of toxic gases. Based on a well-known scheme, these rumors were immediately taken out by those who are financed by western capitalists; I am referring to NGOs and the White Helmets who are mendaciously acting under the cloak of health professionals. And these reports were also taken up and transferred to media outlets.

It behooves us once again to state that many of these dubious structures have a clear list of the email addresses of representatives of Security Council members, which shows that some of our colleagues, with a reckless approach towards their status, are leaking sensitive information to their protégés. Incidentally, all should recall the way that accidentally, the White Helmets put on the internet a video which showed preparations for staging a so-called victim of an alleged attack perpetrated by the Syrian army.

Indeed, over the last several years, reports out of Syria have been criticized as being primarily of anti-Assad origin and unverified.

In a speech at the UN, pro-Assad Canadian journalist and RT contributor Eva Bartlett gave her account of what's going on with reports out of Syria - calling western sources "compromised" and "not credible."

Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Theresa May told President Trump on Tuesday that Britain would require more evidence in last weekend's suspected chemical attack before committing to a military strike against Syria, reports The Times.

May chaired a meeting of the national security council in London this week, where she spoke with Presidents Trump and Macron for the first time since the Douma chemical attack. It is reported that Trump, who's had a remarkable change of heart on U.S. involvement in Syria since the election, did not ask the UK to join military strikes

A No 10 read-out of her call with the US president stated that they agreed the international community “needed to respond” but stopped short of blaming the Syrian regime. “They agreed that reports of a chemical weapons attack in Syria were utterly reprehensible and if confirmed, represented further evidence of the Assad regime’s appalling cruelty against its own people and total disregard for its legal obligations not to use these weapons,” it said. -The Times

President Trump also appears to have backed off an imminent strike after promising Syria would "pay a big price," and that the U.S. response would be decided by Wednesday. Trump reportedly canceled travel plans after reports emerged that Russian and Iranian involvement in Syria would complicate matters in the region.

Meanwhile, Secretary of Defense James Mattis has said that the U.S. is still assessing intelligence on the alleged chemical attack, saying in a statement "we're still working on this." In the same breath, Mattis said the United States is "ready" to provide military options for Syria.

There were reports on Wednesday about the presence of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
The Iranian news agency Amade News quoted sources within the Revolutionary Guards as saying that the Assad family would be among families to be evacuated soon to Tehran.
He pointed out that this step comes because of "the state of panic and fear among the ranks of the Revolutionary Guards and their families in Syria."
But the news agency «Novosti» confirmed that Assad and his family are still in Syria, and the news of their evacuation to Tehran is false ».
Earlier, Israeli media announced that Assad had left his palace near Damascus via a Russian military convoy.
