Will be launched next January .. Iran goal of "Arab NATO"

The Arab world is looking forward to the formation of a military alliance called "Arab NATO" along the lines of the international alliance known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which is expected to launch during a summit hosted by the United States of America in January.

Deputy Secretary of State for Arab Gulf Affairs, Tim Linderking, revealed the new features of the new Arab alliance and its long-term goals, indicating that it will include the GCC countries (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain) Qatar and Oman), as well as the United States of America, Egypt and Jordan.

The official said that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will host a meeting of the GCC + 2 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to prepare for the upcoming January summit.

"The idea of the alliance stems from the Riyadh Summit of 2017, where it was agreed with the United States and the Gulf Cooperation Council to meet annually, and in addition there was strong interest from both sides in the formation of the Middle East strategic alliance."

He revealed that "the alliance will be based on a security, economic and political agreement linking the GCC countries, the United States, Egypt and Jordan."

The concept of the Middle East Strategic Alliance was "to build a strong shield against threats in the Gulf, especially Iran, cyber attacks, infrastructure attacks and coordination of conflict management efforts from Syria to Yemen as part of its agenda," Landring said.

He considered that increased coordination of efforts leads to enhancing the effectiveness of stability, noting that Iran is the "first threat" to the list of the coalition.

He criticized Iran's role in Yemen and said: "Iran is getting away with actual killings. They are helping and inciting the Huthis to attack Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which is unacceptable to the United States. These are key allies, and their territorial integrity is the cornerstone of our policy. In the Gulf for decades. "

"It is our duty to raise the cost to Iran, and part of our own strategy is to confront the Iranians who are moving in the theater of operations," he said. This is impunity. "

Asked whether the countermeasures would include increasing the US naval presence near the Bab al-Mandab Strait and intercepting arms shipments, the US official said: "This is what we will see soon, and we will add to that to see what Iranians are already doing."

Lenderking denied the claim that the United States was shrinking its defense commitment following a report in the Wall Street Journal that it was withdrawing missile defense systems from Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan to counter threats from China and Russia in other regions. "It is not a retreat in commitment but a transfer of resources."

The US official expressed the hope that "the GCC countries will consider the priority of US relations before entering into problematic agreements with other countries," praising at the same time the improvement of Saudi-Iraqi relations, and the recent announcement that Germany and Saudi Arabia have restored their diplomatic relations in full , And considered it "wonderful".

«Arab NATO» .. Goals, intentions and questions?!

Posted by فتحي خطاب

Date: 12:42 PM, September 30

After US Assistant Secretary of State for Arab Gulf Affairs, Tim Linderking, spent the last three weeks carrying out regional delimitation missions in the Gulf to prepare for a summit to be hosted by the United States in January 2019 to launch the Middle East Strategic Alliance (MESA) or "Arab NATO" as some call it. Questions remain about American goals, intentions and interests, and about the reservations facing the "new alliance" under the umbrella of military and political economic security, with the participation of the Emirate of Qatar.

Arabic version of NATO

  • It is clear that the American arrangements are accelerating on this track, and the administration of US President Donald Trump, for a while, the establishment of a security alliance comprising six Gulf countries as well as Egypt and Jordan .. And the Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, meeting with foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council And Egypt and Jordan on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, in preparation for the summit to be held in January .. The US minister, that «an alliance will be based on a security agreement, economic and political ties between the GCC countries in addition to the United States, Egypt and Jordan».

US and Arab sources revealed last summer that the administration of US President Donald Trump began work on a project to form an Arab version of NATO from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Egypt and Jordan to counter the spread of Iranian influence in the Middle East, The Deputy Foreign Minister Khalid al-Jarallah said at the end of July that his country is considering US proposals to establish a strategic alliance in the Middle East in order to counter Iranian influence in the region.

  • Pentagon sources told the Kuwaiti media that Kuwait's meeting of GCC, Egypt, Jordan and US Central Command chiefs on Wednesday could be a prelude to the formation of what is known as the Arab NATO. "It does not matter if we launch, The name of NATO is Arabic or otherwise, labels are the task of politicians, but the military, their mission to prepare for any emergency to defend their home ».
  • According to military experts, there is no consensus among Arab countries on the approach towards Iran, while Qatar and Oman maintain normal relations with Iran .. While Qatar's Foreign Minister, Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman al-Thani, to ignore the dispute between members of the Arab alliance, which intends "Respect for the sovereignty of states must be part of the policy of any alliance, so it must be based on clear foundations and a more atmosphere," Al-Thani told a news conference in New York last week. Positive, and the Gulf crisis a real test of the strategic alliance with the United States ».

  • In the same context, the expert in the Russian Council for International Affairs, Antón Mardasov, believes that the United States is working to create an anti-Iranian front, and this idea is not new, and every time it collided with the incompatibility between the Arab countries, Stable, this initiative could help the United States and Iran's adversaries find solutions to current problems. Perhaps NATO is needed to achieve a short-term impact, by forcing Iran to renegotiate the nuclear deal or even to persuade Arab states to invest in eastern Syria, Is under militia control Kurdish backed by the United States.

Dr. Hala Mustapha, a professor of political science at the American University, points to basic observations raised by the idea of "Arab NATO":

  • First, the US administration's almost unilateral focus on Iran as a key supporter of recruiting, arming, and training terrorists without naming other countries that contribute to the same role or employing Sunni insurgent groups in proxy wars carries selectivity, Al-Sisi pointed out that "the confrontation can not be reduced to one theater of operations without another" and that certain countries provide the political cover for these groups (such as the Muslim Brotherhood, which the American side has never mentioned).
  • Second, the success of any military alliance is closely linked to the political unity and compatibility between the ruling regimes so that they agree on a unified definition of national security and the sources of threats and challenges facing it, that is, a common vision precedes it. This is the initial experience of NATO, Suffice it to refer to the statements of the emir of Qatar, in which he defended Iran.
  • Third, if the United States is the superpower that will support such an alliance, it is assumed that its positions and policies are in harmony with all its regional parties, a condition that is not yet in place. For example, Egypt considers that both Turkey and Qatar are pursuing policies against it, "Qatar's hosting of the US Central Command makes it a critical strategic partner," he said, as he praised Turkey's role in hosting the largest number of Syrian refugees.

She added d. Hala said that there is the position of Russia, the international force active in the region, which quickly attacked the entire idea, and even considered it leading to more tension and war in the region, especially with the continuation of its alliance with Iran. It is no secret that the countries supposed to establish the new alliance does not stand at a distance One of them, in other words, is a lot of work before the Arab NATO idea becomes reality.

  • For his part, said US Deputy Secretary of State, Landrking, that the goal of this alliance is "to address the Iranian aggression and terrorism and extremism and stability in the Middle East," noting that the new alliance will be an Arab version of NATO, "NATO" .. Although the position US President Trump in his dealings with European partners in NATO was inclined to confrontation, but US officials believe that the Arab alliance can be an inspiring model for a new formation in the region.

The call came during a speech at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly meeting in Halifax, Canada.

He seized two thirds of Iraq's territory in 2014 and continued fighting against the organization for nearly three years has caused significant damage to the infrastructure of many cities. The Iraqi government has spent huge sums to cover the war against the organization, which Baghdad declared victory over last year.

"Iraq has achieved great victories over the organization of a supporter of the terrorist, thanks to the sacrifice and courage of the army, the popular crowd and the Peshmerga forces, and liberated most of the cities," Al-Haddad said in a statement issued by his office on Friday.

No poke at you master yota691, but here's a case of the US funding and more help to Iraq. I've never been a NATO supporter, I understand why it originated, but it's members other than the 2017 indications met the "suggested" target. Hence the POTUS irritation with Germany for example.
