Iraqi forces discover alcohol, sex dolls in IS tunnel during ‘desert triangle’ operation

Islamic State Iraqi Forces Desert Triangle

 

 

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Iraqi forces have found alcohol, drugs, and sex dolls in a tunnel belonging to the Islamic State (IS) during operations to clear the desert triangle in western Iraq, a military source told Kurdistan 24 on Monday.

The discovery was not the first occasion government forces have found alcohol at an IS headquarters.

Last year, during the campaign to liberate the militant group’s former stronghold of Mosul, security forces seized weapons, military clothing, and large amounts of alcohol.

The organization often tried to enforce a radical view of Islam while it had control of cities in both Iraq and Syria before its eventual collapse.

However, the Iraqi Military Information Cell did not issue any statement or further details about the discovery.

Meanwhile, Iraqi forces along with the Iranian-backed Shia Hashd al-Shaabi militias recently announced the end of the first phase of the campaign to liberate the desert areas in the west of the country from IS.

“Iraqi forces and the Hashd al-Shaabi have succeeded in clearing the villages and areas between the southern urban areas and areas north of Rawa,” campaign leader Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah said in a statement.

Last week, Iraqi troops and the Shia militias launched a massive operation to clear a vast desert triangle area covering about 29,000 square kilometers linking the provinces of Anbar, Nineveh, and Salahuddin.

Yarallah said Iraqi and Shia militia forces had cleared nearly 50 percent of the desert triangle, also called “the island.”

He added they had cleared 175 villages and five bridges, including a small airport.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had previously announced the fall of IS in the country, but said the final victory would not take place before the island was cleared.
