The United States has requested that part of its contribution to the United Nations Development Program be allocated to Christians and Yezidis in Iraq, said Ambassador Nicky Hailey.

"We have to ensure that our funding is distributed optimally," Hayley said in a statement released after a meeting with Secretary-General Antonio Guterich.

"The American initiative to pay more money to religious minorities in Iraq is very appropriate. It has done great harm to these ancient civilizations," she said. "We have a chance now to help them return to their communities and the American organizations on the ground want to help them."

On July 5, 2017, the United States announced new $ 150 million in aid to Iraq and indicated that the grant would be launched through the United Nations Development Program through the United Nations Development Program.

US intends to direct UNDP to assist Christians, Yezidis in Iraq

26th November, 2017

Ambassador Nikki Haley, US Permanent Representative to the UN, met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the US Mission to the UN website reported.

Haley and Guterres discussed the US’ new policy to bolster support for persecuted religious minorities around the world, especially those who have been victims of atrocities committed by ISIS.

She explained that the US intends to direct‎ a portion of its contributions to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to assist these communities, especially Christians and Yezidis in Iraq.

She also asked for the Secretary-General’s assistance in implementing the administration’s new policy by prioritizing assistance to persecuted religious minorities.

The Secretary-General welcomed the opportunity to work with Ambassador Haley on this priority.

“The American initiative to move more funds into devastated religious minority communities in Iraq could not be more timely. ISIS has done so much damage to these ancient civilizations. Now we have the opportunity to help people return to their communities, and US organizations on the ground are eager to help. We must make sure our resources are directed in the most effective ways,” said Ambassador Haley.

Haley reiterated that the US continues to be the world’s humanitarian leader and that providing life-saving assistance to the world’s most vulnerable, including ethnic and religious minorities, remains a core value of the US commitment to humanitarian aid.
