Member of the Parliamentary Integrity accuses the Commission of selectivity in opening files of corruption

 

 

BAGHDAD (AP) - A member of the Integrity Committee in Parliament, MP Kazem Sayadi, on Monday, May 13, 2019 accused the Integrity Commission of selectivity in opening files of corruption, while calling for an investigation with the Commission and the Investigations Department.

A former government official has revealed to a Gulf newspaper various destinations for billions of dollars looted from Iraq over the past 12 years, stressing that most of them turned into commercial complexes, residential and commercial real estate, land, banks and satellite channels.

The official, who declined to be identified, said the majority of the looted money was in various forms among officials and their relatives, deputies in parliament and leaders of political blocs.

He pointed out that the largest looting of state funds took place during the era of former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in 2006 2014, explaining that billions of dollars were smuggled abroad, while invested another part of the looted funds inside Iraq.

He pointed out that the former government of Haidar al-Abadi did not lack corruption, but to a lesser extent because of the financial crisis that was striking the country at the time, stressing that most former officials and deputies registered their property with the names of relatives to escape prosecution.

He pointed out that a number of private banks in Baghdad are run by politicians, pointing out that it was not only that, but extended to the media.
