The Iraqi government announced on Monday the return of the house of one of the former members of the former regime whose assets were confiscated and their own money.

The Accountability and Justice Commission, which is responsible for de-Baathification of state institutions, has announced lists of thousands of names who were to confiscate or seize their movable and immovable property from symbols of Saddam Hussein's regime, which was dropped by US forces in 2003.

Saddam Hussein's cousin, Ali Hassan al-Majid, known as "Chemical Ali" executed in 2010 and half brother of Saddam Barzan Ibrahim al-Hassan al-Tikriti, who was executed in 2007, as well as Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan, who was executed in 2007.

The list also included Saddam's special secretary Abdul Hamid Mahmud, known as Abdul Hamoud, who was executed in 2012, as well as Tariq Aziz, who died in 2015 after being jailed after surrendering to US forces in 2003.

The General Secretariat of the Iraqi Council of Ministers called in a statement published on its website "covered by the law of seizure and confiscation of movable and immovable property belonging to the pillars of the former regime No. 72 of 2017 to consider requests for exemption of one dwelling, based on Article II of Article 1 and Article I of Article 3 of the Act ".

The law stipulates that the confiscation of funds includes all movable and immovable property such as real estate, cars, bank accounts and money.

The Secretariat of the Council of Ministers said in its statement that those covered can apply for a refund of the housing through the website or direct submission by reviewing the Citizens Service Bureau.

Among the conditions covered by those applying for exemption are that they are not previously beneficiaries or their heirs who have an official agency certified that the real estate deed, the legal image of the Qassam, the death certificate and the official documents are attached.

Recently, the Accountability and Justice Commission published on its website two lists, one of which included the names of those whose money was confiscated and includes 52 names starting with the name of Abdul Hamoud al-Tikriti and ending with Khamis Sarhan al-Mahmoud in sequence 52.

In the second list of names of those who booked their money and include 4257 names of people who worked in the banned Baath Party and in the security services.

The Baath Party ruled the Iraqi state for more than three decades before being overthrown by an international coalition led by Washington and then banned and prevented from returning to political life under any name.

Iraqi court charges 4 interior ministry officials with corruption

Iraqi court charges 4 interior ministry officials with corruption

An Iraqi court has charged, on Thursday, four officials from the intelligence services with “financial and administrative corruption.”

The Interior Ministry-affiliated four suspects included a brigadier general who was head of the intelligence and counterterrorism department in western Baghdad, a major, a captain, and an associate employed by the ministry.

The case against the four alleges they “blackmailed” the families of detained individuals to extort money. They are also charged with “tampering with investigative documents, changing the facts, or inventing financial evidence,” added the court’s statement.

They are also accused of delaying the release of detainees who had been freed by the courts until “families paid sums of money.”

Anger over corruption that has left public services underfunded despite oil wealth is one of the factors driving deadly protests in the southern province of Basra.

Leaders in Baghdad have declared war on corruption, but practical steps lag behind political promises.
