Jalal Talabani, former Iraqi president and PUK leader, has died By Rudaw 41 minutes ago

.
.
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Former Iraqi president and leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Jalal Talabani has passed away in Germany, aged 83.

While remaining nominally head of the PUK, Talabani withdrew from public life after suffering a stroke in December 2012. He was in Germany seeking health care and had reportedly slipped into a coma earlier on Tuesday. Known affectionately by Kurds as Mam Jalal, meaning Uncle, Jalal Hisamadin Talabani was born on November 12, 1933 in the village of Kalkan near Mount Kosrat. He graduated with a law degree from Baghdad University in 1959. Political from an early age, he joined the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in 1947, at age 14. Throughout his life he has been a journalist, Peshmerga, and politician. In 1975, he left the KDP and established the PUK under the motto: peace, democracy, human rights and self-determination.

In April 2005, he was elected president of Iraq by the transitional national assembly. He won a second term as president the following year and again in 2010. He suffered a stroke in December 2012 and spent a year and a half in Germany receiving medical treatment. Fuad Masum was elected president of Iraq in July 2014, succeeding Talabani. At a rally in Sulaimani, heartland of the PUK, before Kurdistan’s independence referendum, Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani said the mission to achieve the nation’s long-held quest for independence would have been easier if Talabani was in better health. “My dear brother President Mam Jalal, I will never forget your brotherhood,” said Barzani.

Barzani Announces One Week Public Mourning for Talabani's Loss

ERBIL— Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani on Tuesday announced seven days of public grief for the death of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK)'s  Secretary General Jalal Talabani.

In a video message aired by major news channels in Kurdistan, Barzani extended his condolences to Talabani's family, the people of Kurdistan, and the PUK leaders and members, saying he has lost "a friend, brother and a strong support."

"The loss of a leader like Mam Jalal is a great loss for our people that cannot be mended easily."

"For this sad occasion, we declare one week public mourning."

President Barzani was proud that he and Talabani  were able to remove many obstacles on the way of the struggle and resistance of the people of Kurdistan and to experience many bitter and difficult times.

For the many of the achievements that Kurdistan enjoys today, Barzani paid tribute to the consensus and brotherhood that Kurdistan leaders, along with Talabani, built up in Iraq.

At the same time, Barzani reiterated the best way to display loyalty to the deceased leader is "to buttress our unity."

"It's also though this [unity] that we can meet the sacred aim for which our leaders and thousands of martyrs sacrificed their lives."

The former Iraqi president died today in a hospital in Germany. Talabani suffered a stroke in 2012 and since then had been away from political life due to his physical condition which required frequent visits and stays in Germany for treatment.

Talabani, who served as Iraqi president twice, was a popular and charismatic politician in Kurdistan and was best known by his nickname, Mam Jalal (meaning Uncle Jalal in Kurdish).
