The airstrike was carried out on the outskirts of the militant group's de facto capital Raqqa, on a command post where ISIS leaders were meeting, Russian state media TASS reports.
"According to information, which is being verified via different channels, the meeting was also attended by the (ISIS) leader Ibrahim Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was eliminated in the strike," the ministry said, according to the TASS report in English.
They were discussing their exit from the city through the so-called southern corridor, the ministry said, according to TASS.

Islamic State leader Baghdadi 'may have been killed by Russia'

A man purported to be the reclusive leader of the militant Islamic State Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi - June 2014Ab BakBaghdadi seen delivering a sermon in 2014

Russia's defence ministry is investigating whether one of its air strikes in Syria killed the leader of the Islamic State militant group (IS).

The ministry said an air strike may have killed Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and up to 330 other fighters on 28 May.

It said the raid had targeted a meeting of the IS military council in the group's de-facto capital of Raqqa, in northern Syria.

There have been a number of previous reports of Baghdadi's death.

Colonel John Dorrian, a spokesman for the US-led coalition fighting IS, said the US could not confirm whether Baghdadi had been killed.

There has been no official comment from Syria's government.

A statement by Russia's defence ministry published by the state-funded Sputnik news agency said 30 IS commanders and up to 300 soldiers were at the Raqqa meeting.

"According to information that is checked through various channels, IS leader Ibrahim Abu-Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was killed as a result of the strike, was also present at the meeting," it added.

Baghdadi's whereabouts have been unknown for some time, although he was believed to be in Mosul in Iraq before a US-led coalition began an effort to reclaim the city in October 2016.

Reuters reported that he was recently believed to have been "hiding in thousands of square miles of desert" rather than living in either Mosul or Raqqa.

His only public appearance since proclaiming the creation of an IS caliphate was in a video in June 2014, in which he was seen delivering a sermon in Mosul after IS took control of the city.

Since then, the group has lost considerable amounts of territory and has been under pressure from air strikes by Russian-led forces and by the US and its allies.

In March, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that "nearly all" of Baghdadi's deputies had been killed.

"It is only a matter of time before Baghdadi himself meets this same fate," he added.

Who is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi?

Baghdadi - thought to be a nom de guerre rather than his real name - is believed to have been born in Samarra, north of Baghdad, in 1971.

Reports suggest he was a cleric in a mosque in the city around the time of the US-led invasion in 2003.

Some believe he was already a militant jihadist during the rule of Saddam Hussein. Others suggest he was radicalised during the four years he was held at Camp Bucca, a US facility in southern Iraq where many al-Qaeda commanders were detained.

He emerged as the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, one of the groups that later became Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (IS), in 2010.

In October 2011, the US officially designated Baghdadi as a "terrorist". It has offered a reward of up to $25m (£19.6m) for information leading to his capture or death.

IS went on to seize Mosul, Iraq's second-biggest city, in June 2014 before claiming swathes of territory and launching deadly attacks on Western cities, including Paris in November 2015.

RUSSIA CLAIMS IT HAS KILLED IS LEADER AL-BAGHDADI

BY VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV

MOSCOW (AP) -- Russia claimed Friday it killed the leader of the Islamic State group in an airstrike on a meeting of IS leaders just outside the IS de facto capital in Syria.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in a Russian strike in late May along with other senior group commanders.

If confirmed, it would mark a major military success for Russia, which has conducted a military campaign in support of Syrian President Bashar Assad since September 2015.

The ministry said the air raid on May 28 that targeted an IS meeting held on the southern outskirts of Raqqa in Syria also killed about 30 mid-level militant leaders and about 300 other fighters.

The ministry said the strike came as IS leaders gathered to discuss the group's withdrawal from Raqqa, the group's de facto capital.

It said the military began planning the hit after getting word that the IS leaders were going to gather for a meeting to plan their exit to the south.

The Russian military sent drones to monitor the area and then dispatched a group of Su-34 bombers and Su-35 fighter jets to hit the IS gathering.

"According to the information that is being verified through various channels, IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi also attended the meeting and was killed in the airstrike," it said in a statement.

The ministry added that it had warned the U.S. of the coming strike.

The ministry said that among other militant leaders killed in the raid were IS leaders Abu al-Khadji al-Mysri, Ibrahim al-Naef al-Khadj and Suleiman al-Shauah.

If confirmed, it would mark a major military success for Russia, which has conducted a military campaign in support of Syrian President Bashar Assad since September 2015.

The U.S.-led anti-ISIS military coalition said Friday that it could not immediately confirm the Russian claims.

The ministry said the air raid on May 28 that targeted an ISIS meeting held on the southern outskirts of Raqqa in Syria also killed about 30 mid-level militant leaders and about 300 other fighters.

The ministry said the strike came as ISIS leaders gathered to discuss the group's withdrawal from Raqqa, its de facto capital.

It said the military began planning the hit after getting word that the ISIS leaders were going to gather for a meeting to plan their exit to the south.

The Russian military sent drones to monitor the area and then dispatched a group of Su-34 bombers and Su-35 fighter jets to hit the ISIS gathering.

"According to the information that is being verified through various channels, ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi also attended the meeting and was killed in the airstrike," it said in a statement.

The ministry added that it had warned the U.S. of the coming strike.

The ministry said that among other militant leaders killed in the raid were ISIS leaders Abu al-Khadji al-Mysri, Ibrahim al-Naef al-Khadj and Suleiman al-Shauah.

Al-Baghdadi became the head of ISIS almost by default as the terror group evolved from what had been al Qaeda in Iraq. There have been previous unconfirmed reports of his demise that proved incorrect.

The four buildings, which the MoD said had been used by jihadist commanders for a high-profile meeting on May 28, are marked and have been levelled, as seen in the second photo.

Earlier, the Russian military said that the airstrikes - conducted by Su-34 and Su-35 aircraft - may have killed the leader of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

The ministry said the meeting, where Baghdadi was reportedly present, was arranged to discuss the relocation of IS troops from Raqqa.
