It added that the graves contained dead bodies of security forces, women, and children.

On Tuesday, the security forces have found a mass grave in southwestern Hawija district.

Captain Miqdad al-Saedi, Snipers’ platoon commander in Rapid Response Forces (RRF), has been killed by ISIS terrorists during Hawija liberation operation, a security source revealed Thursday.
A page on Facebook supporting the joint security forces has mourned his loss.
He deserves credit for being behind the success of many military operations, particularly the old ones, according to the page.
On Thursday, Iraqi forces said they recaptured central Hawija, one of the last enclaves of ISIS.
On Wednesday, they had said they killed 196 ISIS terrorists and recaptured 98 villages.
The area, where tens of thousands of civilians live, has been under the terrorist group's control since 2014.
The recapture leaves just one area of Iraq under the terrorist group's control; a stretch of land along the western border with Syria.
Troops, police and paramilitaries engaged in the Iraqi offensive against ISIS "liberated the whole of the centre of Hawija and are continuing their advance," the operation's commander, Lieutenant General Abdel Amir Yarallah, said.
The country's army has been engaged in a sustained offensive against ISIS this year, retaking the country's second largest city Mosul in July after a nine-month battle.

'Victory for the world' as IS driven out of their last stronghold in Iraq

The successful operation by Iraqi troops has been described as a "significant milestone", but many challenges remain.

By Bethan Staton, News Reporter

17:45, UK, Thursday 05 October 2017

Iraq's Prime Minister has declared victory over Islamic State in Hawija, one of the group's last strongholds in the country.

Speaking in Paris, Haider al Abadi declared that the "liberation" of Hawija was a "victory not just for Iraq, but for the whole world".

The recapture is a strategic win for Iraqi troops, backed by a US-led coalition, who for the last year have been pushing to drive IS from parts of the country.

A statement for Operation Inherent Resolve, the US-led coalition fighting IS, said "battle-hardened" troops had fought for 14 days to liberate the city.

It described the win as a "significant milestone" but added that security forces are continuing their work to drive IS from their remaining strongholds.

The militant group was significantly weakened over the summer when Iraqi troops fought street by street to take cities like Mosul and Tel Afar - with militants now concentrated in northern towns on the Syrian border.

However, bringing the country under government control brings the new challenge of establishing a stable peace in Iraq.

Aid groups have warned that thousands of people have been displaced by the battle for Hawija, after suffering under IS rule since 2014 and enduring airstrikes and shortages as forces struggled to liberate the city.

A statement by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said that more than 12,500 people had fled and were now in need of water, food and shelter - often in overstretched refugee camps.

Heidi Diedrich, the NRC's director in Iraq, said: "Innocent Iraqi civilians have lost family members, had their homes destroyed and are left displaced with nothing.

She also warned further international assistance was needed to help the people of Hawija rebuild their lives.

It is thought that more than 100,000 people have been driven from their homes across the country.

Officials are also considering how to deal with the push for independence from Iraq's Kurdish region, a little north of Hawija, after 90% of Kurds voted to secede from the state in a referendum last week.

Tensions between Sunni populations and a Shia-dominated government are also a concern as authorities face the task of rebuilding a country that has been reduced to rubble in many areas.

Following talks with Mr al Abadi on Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron pledged a €30m (£26m) loan to help with reconstruction in Iraq - adding that dialogue is needed to resolve the Kurdish crisis.

Baghdad - Mawazine News

Washington said that the liberation of Hawija represents a major step towards the expulsion of a full supporter of Iraqi territory, saying it was a fierce battle and could not have been resolved without the courage and sacrifices of Iraqi forces in the field and with the support of the coalition.

The US Embassy in Iraq congratulated the Iraqi security forces, which under the leadership of Prime Minister Abbadi, liberated the city and citizens of Hawija from the control of the Dahesh organization.

"As one of the last bastions in Iraq, Hawija is a major step towards the expulsion of Saddam Hussein from Iraq."

"The battle for the liberation of Hawija was a fierce battle and could not have been resolved without the courage and sacrifices of Iraqi forces on the ground and with the support of the coalition," she said.

"The ultimate defeat will depend on the continued close cooperation of all Iraqi security forces, including the Iraqi army, the counterterrorism agency, the federal and local police, the Popular Popular Forces and the Kurdish Peshmerga, united by a common goal against the violence and oppression that has afflicted the Iraqi people," she said.

"The United States stands proudly with the government and people of Iraq and we are working together to ensure a peaceful and prosperous future," she concluded.

ISIS terrorists collapse, wait for more surprises - US envoy

ISIS terrorists collapse and surrender in huge numbers from their former stronghold of Hawija, Brett McGurk, US special envoy for the coalition against ISIS, said in a tweet on Friday.

He added that more surprises are on the way

The top US military commander in Iraq has congratulated Iraqi forces for their "swift and decisive victory" in liberating Hawija, the last major bastion of ISIS control in Iraq.

"Today's victory demonstrates we are stronger together, and this Coalition remains committed to supporting our partners in the tough fight ahead as we continue our mission to defeat ISIS," said Lt. Gen. Paul Funk in a statement.

The battle for Hawija lasted 14 days, and ended Thursday with the reported surrender of more than 1,000 dispirited ISIS terrorists.

The fall of Hawija leaves ISIS in control of only a small sliver of desert in Iraq's Anbar Governorate, a corridor from Rawah to al-Qaim, near the Syrian border.

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-iraq-hawija/islamic-state-driven-out-of-last-stronghold-in-northern-iraq-idUSKBN1CA0FJ

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi forces announced on Thursday they had captured Islamic State’s last stronghold in northern Iraq, leaving the militant group holed up near the Syrian border as its self-proclaimed “caliphate” shrinks further.

The town of Hawija and the surrounding areas fell in an offensive by U.S.-backed Iraqi government troops and Iranian-trained and armed Shi‘ite paramilitary groups known as Popular Mobilisation.

Some fighting took place to the north and east of the town where the militants were surrounded.

With the fall of Hawija, which lies near the Kurdish-held oil city of Kirkuk, the only area that remains under control of Islamic State in Iraq is a stretch alongside the western border with Syria, where the militant group is also in retreat.

The capture of Hawija was a boost for the Iraqi government, which faces a separate crisis in the north of the country, where the Kurdish minority last month voted overwhelmingly in support of independence for their autonomous region.

In Hawija, state TV showed footage of Iraqi forces raising flags in one of the town's squares while Humvees patrolled empty streets littered with car wrecks, houses riddled with bullets and shattered storefronts. (Graphics on 'Iraqi Kurds' independence push' - here)

“The army’s 9th armored division, the Federal Police, the Emergency Response division and ... Popular Mobilisation liberated Hawija,” said a statement from the joint operations commander, Lieutenant-General Abdul Ameer Rasheed Yarallah.

Thick black smoke rose from areas surrounding Hawija, from oil wells set on fire by the militants to prevent air detection.

The capture of Hawija brings Iraqi forces into direct contact with Kurdish Peshmerga fighters who control Kirkuk, a multi-ethnic region claimed by both Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Kirkuk shaped up as a flashpoint last month when the KRG included the city in the referendum on Kurdish independence in northern Iraq.

“We don’t want any aggression or confrontations but the federal authority must be imposed in the disputed areas,” Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi told a news conference in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Macron offered to mediate between the Iraqi government and Kurdish regional authorities, and promised to maintain a military presence there until Islamic State was defeated.
