Iraq won third place globally, the worst countries in the world in terms of security, through an assessment conducted by the Global Peace Index , the UN Foundation " the Global Peace the Index ".

According to the assessment, Iraq remains among the five most dangerous countries in the world, and for the last five years, respectively .

The assessment also added that Iraq is the second least secure Middle East country, ahead of Syria alone.

Iraq was classified based on the data adopted by the UN, including security and internal instability, regional and international conflict and its impact on the state concerned, as well as the militarization of society .

The report attached to the assessment pointed out that Iraq is still under the worst financial countries even with the defeat of terrorist gangs, the fact that his war with terrorism is still continuing, as well as the differences of his internal situation, which distanced his situation from security in an accelerated manner.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq has been ranked the third least peaceful country in the world in the recently released Global Peace Index (GPI) report, mainly due to the war with the Islamic State (IS).

According to the report, Iraq has remained in the bottom five countries in the index for the last five years.

Meanwhile, Syria was ranked the least peaceful country in the world for the second successive year.

The countries on the GPI list are ranked based on several factors including societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and militarization.

Regarding regional positions, Iraq is the second least peaceful country in the Middle East, only ahead of Syria.

The war with IS in both countries, as well as an ongoing civil war in Syria, has contributed to the low rankings.

Even as the extremist group is defeated in both Iraq and Syria, the threat to each countries' stability and security would remain, the GPI report warned.

“Despite the recent military setbacks experienced by [IS], governments throughout the region are well aware this could translate into a growing domestic threat from jihadist groups,” the report read.

While Iraqi forces continue to battle the remaining pockets of IS resistance, the Kurdistan Region has been pushing toward independence in a bid to provide more stability and safety in the areas it manages.

Senior Kurdish officials often highlight the role an independent Kurdistan would play in promoting security in the region.

A referendum on independence is scheduled in the Region for Sep. 25, 2017, where the people of Kurdistan will choose whether or not to separate from Iraq.

Most of the nations in the GPI became more peaceful over the last year. 93 countries improved while 68 deteriorated. Over the longer run however, there has been an increase in ‘peace inequality’, with most countries having only small increases in peacefulness, while a handful of countries have had very large deteriorations in peace.

Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held since 2008. It is joined at the top of the index by New Zealand, Portugal, Austria, and Denmark, all of which were ranked highly in the 2016 GPI. There was also very little change at the bottom of the index. Syria remains the least peaceful country in the world, followed by Afghanistan, Iraq, South Sudan, and Yemen.

Iceland is joined at the top of the index by New Zealand, Portugal, Austria, and Denmark, all of which were ranked highly in the 2016 Global Peace Index.

The largest regional deteriorations in the score occurred in North America, followed by sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The score for North America deteriorated entirely as a result of the US, which more than offset a mild improvement in Canada. The US’s score has been dragged down largely because of a deterioration in several indicators: the homicide rate, level of perceived criminality in society and the intensity of organised internal conflict. The latter measure has deteriorated because of the increased levels of political polarisation within the US political system. The US also has experienced the fourth largest drop in Positive Peace globally, after Syria, Greece and Hungry in the ten years to 2015.

Europe remains the most peaceful region in the world, with eight of the ten most peaceful countries coming from this region. However, while 21 of the 34 countries improved, the average peace score did not change notably, due to the substantial deterioration in Turkey, the impact of the terrorist attacks in Belgium and France, and deteriorating relations between Russia and its Nordic neighbours.

More to see on the site itself, but there's some answers in a nutshell. Not surprised to see this about the U.S., but it's unpleasant to have it validated by an outside agency. We really need to work on getting our collective s*** together.
