The Euphrates -

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met on Sunday with Sadr's leader Muqtada al-Sadr, who is visiting Saudi Arabia 11 years after his last visit to the kingdom.

The leader of the Sadrist movement arrived in Jeddah on Sunday, where he was received by Saudi Minister of State for Gulf Affairs Thamer al-Sabhan, who previously served as Saudi ambassador to Baghdad, was greeted by Sadr in Jeddah.

Sadr's office said earlier that he would travel to Saudi Arabia at the official invitation, the first since his last visit to Riyadh 11 years ago.

In a statement issued by Sadr's office, "We were very pleased with what we found to be a positive breakthrough in the Saudi-Iraqi relations, and we hope that it is the beginning of the retreat and the retreat of the sectarian sharpness in the Arab-Islamic region."

Saudi foreign policy has taken a new turn in dealing with the Iraqi file, moving in the hope of returning Iraq to its Arab incubator away from Iranian influence.

Riyadh has strong opposition to pro-Iranian Shiite forces that are working to ease Iranian infiltration into the Iraqi state.

The move comes amid reciprocal visits between Saudi and Iraqi officials in recent times, while Sadr has on more than one occasion positive attitudes suggest that he seeks to balance the relations between Iraq and Iran and keep the country away from the influence of Iran's dominant in Iraq since the US invasion of Baghdad in 2003.

Followers of Iraqi affairs Muqtada al-Sadr, who has considerable influence, has pushed to show the current he leads as a national stream of loyalty to Iraq, not to the Shiite sect or incubator.

They pointed out that it is not possible to explain Sadr himself or try to get out of the jilbab of Iran in isolation from the ambitions of political men.

Sources say Sadr is showing dissatisfaction with Iranian support for armed Shi'ite factions and rejects Tehran's influence on Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

These sources also indicate that there are differences between the local Iraqi and Iranian authorities in force, as Sadr is pushing for the independence of Najaf reference from the reference Qom, which is as complex as the overlap between them, but that in itself is part of the exit from the Gilboa Qom.

Tehran has long sought to contain the Sadr and its influence, amid tense relations and sometimes reached the point of confrontation.

"There are great ties between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, the most important of which are religion, language, borders and history," a local Saudi newspaper quoted al-Sadr as saying in 2016, stressing that "they are national ties and we cherish our neighbors and common borders."

He stressed that it is not possible to dispense with an Arab country from its brothers or unique from the rest of the Arab countries and if there is a required rapprochement with Saudi Arabia there will be a great regional, political, economic and military.

Sadr also said, 'Whoever politicizes the religion has insulted him, and the doctrine of Islam will only harm him. Religion above politics and sects must be respected and appreciated, and sects are mercy, but sectarianism is a curse.'

Saudi Arabia has received many figures including Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who in June led an official visit to the queen accompanied by Interior Minister Qassim al-Araji, known for his proximity to Iran and his statements against the kingdom.

The leader of the Sadrist movement in Iraq, Moqtada al-Sadr, on Sunday visited Saudi Arabia to discuss a number of issues and issues of common interest between the two countries.

In Iran's first reaction to the visit, Iran's Khobar channel hosted two senior Iranian political analysts to discuss the objectives of Sadr's visit to the kingdom.

The political analyst close to the reformist movement, Sabah Zankana, said that "Sadr's visit to Saudi Arabia is very important in the circumstances of the region as a result of tensions," and expressed the hope that Sadr's trip to Saudi Arabia is full of achievements, adding that "the circumstances paved for Saudi Arabia to forgive Dozens of those sentenced to death. "

Iranian author and political analyst Mossadegh Mossadegh Bor described Sadr's visit to Saudi Arabia and received it by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as "a step that hurt the feelings of Muslims."

"Sadr's visit to Saudi Arabia and his reception by Ben Salman wounded the feelings of Muslims," Mossadegh said, declining to be "authorized by Iran to mediate between them and Saudi Arabia to resolve tensions between the two countries."

In mid-June, Muqtada al-Sadr called on Iran and Saudi Arabia to exercise restraint and leave the escalation aside, stressing that a serious and beneficial dialogue between them would be the beginning of the end of the sectarian war in the region. "Tehran and Riyadh must take care of their people without regard to religion, sect, sect, religion or race," he said.

Sadr and Abadi

Sadrist Movement leader Muqtada al-Sadr's visit to Saudi Arabia is more significant than Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s due to al-Sadr’s large Shiite constituency, Middle East Institute (MEI) revealed on Monday.

The think tank also said that Sadr is a fierce opponent of former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki, who is viewed by the Saudis as Iran’s point person in Baghdad.

It is election season in Iraq, and Saudi Arabia is sending a clear message about the leaders with whom it wants to engage in Iraq, MEI noted.

After many years of refusing to engage with Iraqi Shiite political leaders, Riyadh has stepped up its outreach. The Iraqi prime minister and minister of interior have already been welcomed in Riyadh, and now Sadr has paid a visit.

According to MEI, both Riyadh and Baghdad seek this rapprochement for specific reasons. Saudi Arabia wants to contain the Iranian influence in Iraq while some Iraqi Shiite leaders want to chart a foreign policy that reclaims a leading role for Iraq in Arab politics.

The think tank further stated that stability in Iraq will be achieved mainly by reconciliation among the different Iraqi societal and political components. Breaking Iraq’s isolation from its Arab neighborhood will encourage these reconciliation dynamics.

It also weakens the regional sectarian narrative that casts Iraq in an Iran-led Shiite political axis. Political overtures must be followed by action. Saudi financial assistance to rebuild areas liberated from ISIS will cement the Saudi-Iraqi rapprochement, it added.

Iran is losing Shiite allies in Iraq: Commentators

Iraq has witnessed a shift in positions of major Shiite political forces on Iran, with Moqtada al-Sadr, leader of the Sadrist Movement, paying a landmark visit to Riyadh.

He met with Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, where they discussed issues of mutual interest.

Experts told the Baghdad Post it goes without saying the visit signals a deterioration of the Iranian role in Iraq, indicating Saudi Arabia is aimed to counter Iranian influence there.

They added:"Shiite militias fear the Saudi-Iraqi rapprochement will impact its terror activities and curb their loose movements."

Hearts of these militias are set on elections, and if things go really well, they will lose, the commentators further noted.

According to insiders, leaders within IMIS militias held deliberations over the past days. They want to preserve their chances in the coming elections, which may be spoiled due to the recent developments.

They added, citing a report published on al-Arab newspaper, that a map showing the Shiite contestants in the coming elections scheduled for April, 2018.

Others stated it is no secret that Iran is losing Shiite allies in Iraq. The Iranian front is eroding in favor of a more moderate bloc that is open to healthy relations with the Gulf and balanced ties with the US.

Repulsing Iran

Commentators speculate a more moderate Shiite front is in the pipeline in Iraq, citing al-Hakim's imminent visit to Saudi Arabia.

Experts say this shift is fueled by the repulsion of Shiite forces to the practices of Iran.
"Everyone in Iraq is fed up with the Iranian terror, sectarianism and subversion." Experts told the Baghdad Post.

Also, Spokesman for the Sadrist Movement Salah al-Obeidi said the political forces will be fragmented in the coming elections, and new blocs will emerge.

He also added Iran is seeking to achieve its interests in Iraq, adding the Movement will not allow any party to achieve its interests at the expense of the Iraqi ones.

Next prime minister

Experts say that the Shiite blocs will not forge alliances before the elections, saying they will contest in the elections respectively and start merging after elections.

They argue that this step will impact the Iranian clout in the electoral process, jeopardizing its influence in choosing the prime minister of Iraq.

Image1_820173151257198556506.png
"Iran is seeking tirelessly to bring IMIS militias and Maliki coalition together in an electoral coalition to have their own loyalists under the dome of the parliament." Commentators explained.

"Iran plots to have its own influential bloc in the parliament that has the ability to claim premiership."

Politicians close to Iran speak incessantly of massive US and Gulf support in the coming elections in the face of the pro-Iran hardliners.

For Maliki, experts say citing reports, is certain that he will not be Iraq's prime minister due to Arab-US veto. So he is backing IMIS terrorists to support him in the face of Sadr, Abadi and al-Hakim.

"As an Iranian surrogate, Maliki fears the erosion of the Iranian influence on Iraq, so he wants prevent Arabs from ending the Persian hegemony there." Analysts insisted.

But, other commentators said the anti-Iran political forces in Iraq are still weak, despite being more popular.

"The pro-Iran forces are still controlling the economy, the armed forces and security apparatuses. And they are running the country in a way that guarantees the Iranian interests."

New policy

Analysts agree that Saudi Arabia is pursuing a new policy towards Iraq in general and Shiites in particular.

They cited remarks made by crown prince Mohammed bin Salman where he said previous Saudi governments made mistakes when it comes to dealing with Shiite.

Image1_82017315177724379265.png
Financial Times cited Neil Partrick, editor of Saudi Arabian Foreign Policy: Conflict & Cooperation, as saying:“The Saudis have long been interested in exploring Shia options in Iraq.”

He also added Muqtada periodically tries to present himself as an Iraqi nationalist rather than an Iraqi Shia militia chief.

Ibrahim al-Marie, a retired Saudi colonel and a security analyst based in Riyadh, said on social media that an improvement in relations, including the visit of Mr Sadr, was a step in the right direction.

The latest developments signals major shift in Iraq, insiders said, asserting the coming steps will tip the scale against Iran and its allied militias in Iraq.

Iran is now losing allies and influence in Iraq, they added, saying those forces are certain that the Arab clout will prevail the Iranian one. And they prefer forsaking Iran to losing masses.

The leader of the "Al-Mukhtar Army" battalions, Al-Batat, has launched a violent attack on the leader of the Sadrist movement Moqtada al-Sadr on the backdrop of his recent visit to Saudi Arabia, pointing out that this step is "foolish and absurd."

"What happened, Mr. Moqtada, what prompted you to go to Saudi Arabia? I am ignorant of this stupid advice, and in any way you will face the martyrs of Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt, Sudan," he said. , Somalia, al-Hassa and Qatif. "

"What will you say to your father, Sadr, and in what way you will face the martyrs of the Mahdi Army who fell in the American arms that Saudi Arabia bought them?" He said.

Al-Battat was named after his threat to Sunni Arabs, Kurds and Kuwait, as well as his acknowledgment of the targeting of Saudi Arabia's mortars on 21 November 2013, threatening to carry out bombings inside Saudi territory.

His sons were widely reported dead but later appeared alive. He is wanted by the Iraqi judiciary for assaulting Saudi Arabia and inciting sectarian violence. And condemns the absolute loyalty of the Iranian leader Ali Khamenei.

"In any way, Fatima al-Zahra and her tomb will face them, and the mother of the sons and the imams of the Baqi, whose graves are still destroyed, continue to despise the entire sect and support Wahhabism and take it as an official doctrine of their state," he said.

He said: "All the martyrs who fell in your baggage, it is fitting for you to call the Muqtada al-Saud, the martyred martyrs, innocent of this foolish foolish behavior. You should retreat and prepare for your grave and beyond the grave and death."

"Everyone knows that you have been sanctified because you are the son of a militant man who stood up to Saddam. Everyone knows that Saddam did more than what Saudi Arabia did. The former destroyed his people and the second destroyed the entire region."

Al-Sadr visited Saudi Arabia this week at the official invitation of Riyadh, his first visit in 11 years, his last visit to the kingdom in 2006.
