Saleh calls on the World Bank to support development projects in Iraq

The President of the Republic, Barham Salih, called on Thursday, November 29, 2018, the World Bank for the Middle East and North Africa to support social and economic development projects in Iraq, stressing the importance of achieving financial, monetary and economic stability in the country.

"President Barham Saleh received at the Peace Palace in Baghdad this afternoon, World Bank Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa Farid Belhadj, accompanied by the Regional Director of the World Bank for Central Asia, Saroj Kumar Jha," the presidency said in a statement.

He pointed out the importance of the World Bank's support for social and economic development projects in Iraq, as well as appropriate reforms, combating corruption, the necessity of developing and diversifying the sources of the national economy and ensuring the requirements of reconstruction.

"The achievement of financial, monetary and economic stability in Iraq is not only a goal but also a basis for political stability and an important strategic project for sustainable development and civil development in the country," Barham Saleh said.

For his part, the World Bank Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa said that "the World Bank is determined to support the Iraqi economy positively and work to support partnership with Iraqi financial institutions by increasing areas of cooperation and the adoption of better investment resources and energies."

BAGHDAD - Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi received on Thursday, November 29, 2018, World Bank Group Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa and his accompanying delegation.

Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi received on Thursday the Vice President of the World Bank Group for the Middle East and North Africa and his accompanying delegation.

Mr. Adel Abdul-Mahdi stressed that Iraq focuses on investment and provide an environment suitable for him, which will contribute positively to the reconstruction of the country and provide services to citizens, indicating that the dependence should be on productive loans that promote the economy and production and employment, not consumer loans that weigh the budget.

Iraq and the European Union on Sunday signed three agreements worth 72 million euros to support Iraq in the reconstruction of liberated cities, the return of displaced people and the development of the oil sector.

"The Union believes that Iraq has multiple potentials and we are working to help Iraq to diversify the sources of economy and provide job opportunities for Iraqis in general and displaced in particular."

The head of the Iraqi Trade Bank, Faisal Al-Homs, said on Monday that investment with US companies will rebuild the destroyed provinces and infrastructure in the country. 

"The initiative to invest American companies in Iraq will be rebuilt," he said, adding that "Iraq needs this initiative to rebuild more than a province in addition to the restoration of infrastructure."

He pointed out that "the interaction with the countries of the world is in the interest of the country and the building of the Iraqi state and provide a decent life for the citizen," pointing out that "the Iraqi Bank for Trade is a link with the banks of the world, which facilitates the entry of international companies to work in Iraq through guarantees and will have an active role in this field".

 
On Monday morning, the US Chamber of Commerce in Baghdad, attended by US Ambassador Douglas Silliman and Vice  President of the US Chamber of Commerce, Steve Lotus, announced a US initiative to cooperate with Iraq and the introduction of several US companies for investment and reconstruction.
