BAGHDAD – Four Kurdish factions in the Iraqi Parliament will boycott a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi on Sunday evening (March 26) in protest at the Iraqi PM’s lack of commitment to include Kurdish proposals in the 2017 budget.

The head of the Change Movement (Gorran) faction, Kawa Mohammed, told NRT that his party, along with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) and Kurdistan Islamic Group (KIG) will not participate in the meeting with Abadi.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) is yet to disclose its position on the matter, according to Mohammed.

Speaking to NRT, Mohammed pinned the blame on the Iraqi Prime Minister’s lack of commitment to a number of articles proposed by the Kurdish factions to be added to the 2017 budget draft.

He said their demands regarded Peshmerga salaries as well as money to be provided for the reconstruction of Kirkuk and Halabja were not met.

“Abadi decided to allocate Kurdish farmers with only 17% of dues for wheat harvests, and cut funding for the Kurdistan Region’s medical supplies,” he added.

Kurdish officials say that aside from the economic crisis facing the KRG, the Kurdistan Region is facing a shortage of medicine as thousands of internally displaced people and Iraqi security forces receive treatment in the region’s hospitals.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Health called on the World Health Organization (WHO) to assist the region in medical issues.

A WHO delegation met with KRG Health Minister Rekawt Hama Rashid in Erbil on Thursday (March 23), according to Kurdish officials, to discuss the medical issues facing the region.

The Health Ministry highlighted during the meeting the “hard toll” on the health sector in the Kurdistan Region due to providing medical provisions for the hundreds of thousands of displaced people in the region.

A Kurdish deputy said on Monday that Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in a meeting with the parliamentary blocs that Baghdad will send all the financial dues of the peasants of the Kurdistan Region.

A member of the Committee on Economy and Investment in the House of Representatives MP for the Kurdistan Alliance Najiba Najib in a press statement that Abadi pledged during a meeting yesterday with the parliamentary blocs to send financial recruits to the peasants of the region.

Najib said the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers had informed her that the financial dues of the peasants had been delayed a lot, realizing that he stressed that the remaining amounts of farmers will be sent to them as soon as possible.

Najib pointed out that of the total 460 billion dinars of wheat for the farmers of the region last year 2016 will be disbursed of 223 billion and 700 million dinars, pointing out that the amount will soon arrive in the region.
