The competitions committee of the resigned Iraqi Football Association has decided next Thursday, February 20, to resume the local league championship with the participation of 15 teams.

The members of the Executive Bureau of the Iraqi Federation submitted collective resignations to the International Federation (FIFA), in the framework of an agreement concluded with the former international player Adnan Drajal, whereby the latter waives judicial cases filed with the Iraqi courts against the union.

The head of the competitions committee, Ali Jabbar, said in a press conference on Saturday that "the competition will resume on February 20 with a new mechanism in which the opportunity for voluntary participation was made, so 15 teams decided to participate while five teams withdrew."

The withdrawing teams were not affected by the landing decision, that is, they guaranteed their participation in the following season.

The league championship stopped in early October due to security events in the capital, Baghdad, and a number of southern cities, where protest demonstrations calling for improvement in life and service conditions continue.

Jabbar said, "The teams will be distributed to three groups (each group has five teams) who will go back and forth in the way of rallying in the stadiums of the cities of the Kurdistan Region, Erbil, Dohuk and Sulaimaniya, in case the tension continues in some cities."

He added, "In the event that stability and normal life are restored in these cities, the teams in the three groups will play their matches back and forth in their scheduled stadiums."

The new mechanism of the competition includes the qualification of six teams (the first and second of each group) to the final round of the tournament, which will be played in the way of gathering from one stage, and its location will be determined later according to the available conditions.

He noted, "If the conditions are favorable in the capital, there will be matches that bring together the six teams in Baghdad. Otherwise, we will choose another suitable place, perhaps Basra, Najaf, Karbala or Erbil."

The fifteen teams participating in the competition are the port, the air force, oil, industries, central oil, Zora, Najaf, southern oil, electricity, the Baghdad Municipality, Erbil, the police, borders, students, and Maysan oil.

The Competitions Committee also decided to place the Al-Zawra, Police and Air Force teams at the head of each of the three groups.
