Iraq will host the West Asian Football Federation Championship in Basra in November, the first international tournament to be held in the country since the nineties of the last century.

The announcement of the tournament follows the decision of the International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) in March to lift a three-decade ban on hosting Iraq for international matches.

The tournament will be held at the Palm Al-Nakhla Stadium, which has recently hosted friendly international matches, including the meeting that Iraq teamed with his Saudi counterpart in February.

The West Asian federation includes 12 Arab teams, namely Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Yemen, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria, as well as Iraq.

The Iraqi Football Association said that "eight to 10 countries have expressed their initial consent to participate in the tournament."

He added that "the West Asian Union will address the unions under his umbrella to obtain final official approvals."

"The details of the tournament and the participating teams will be revealed later," Football Federation Secretary Sabah Raza told Radio Sawa.

"We do not know yet which countries will participate, because some teams have participation in the World Cup and the other is preparing for the Asian Nations Cup to be held in the UAE early next year."

The tournament was supposed to be held in its ninth edition in December last year in Jordan, but was postponed to a later date and then moved to Iraq.

The Iraqi authorities welcomed the agreement of the West Asian Association to hold the tournament in Iraq.

A statement issued by the Office of Prime Minister Haider Abadi said that "the Iraqi government directed all cadres to prepare the requirements for the success of the championship to provide transportation services and hotels distinctive to visiting delegations."

The Ministry of Youth and Sports said that "the stadiums of Basra, Maysan, Karbala, Najaf and Al Shaab Stadium are all ready to host Arab, continental and international championships."

And expressed its readiness "to provide the necessary support to the Iraqi Football Federation in order to make the tournament a success and to show the country's ability to host official international tournaments."

The "Palm trunk" stadium in Basra, which started in 2009 and opened in 2013, the largest in Iraq and can accommodate 65 thousand spectators.
