ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – In order to facilitate travel, an Iranian Kurdish city will soon begin direct flights with the Kurdistan Region’s capital of Erbil, an Iranian airport official said on Saturday.

The “top priority” of Urmia airport is to “establish direct flights with Erbil,” Director General of Airports of Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province Kamal Parhizkar told the Iranian Fars News agency.

Urmia is the capital city of West Azerbaijan Province with an ethnically diverse population makeup that includes Kurds, Azeri Turks, Assyrians, and Armenians. Erbil and West Azerbaijan provinces are neighbours.

The province’s Kurdish residents – who constitute the majority – are frequent travellers to the Kurdistan Region, be it for business purposes, visiting relatives, or tourism, which is especially the case during seasonal holidays.

Movement between the two sides has grown exceptionally large, according to Parhizkar, prompting them to work in this regard and create a permanent bi-weekly flight schedule between the two sides.

In late March, a Turkish airline announced the launch of direct flights from Turkey’s Gaziantep and Diyarbakir to Erbil, aiming to strengthen economic relations between the Kurdistan Region and Turkey.

“Launching the two direct flights would certainly boost the trade and tourism sectors on both sides,” said Newroz Mawlud, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Minister of Municipalities and Tourism.

Direct Flights to Start Between Urmia and Erbil: Iranian Official

ERBIL - Iranian Kurdish city of Urmia will start flights with the Kurdistan Region's capital Erbil in the near future, an Iranian official confirmed on Saturday.

Talking to Fars News Agency, Director General of Airports of Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province Kamal Parhizkar said that his country's "first priority" in terms of Erbil-Urmia direct flights as a large number of passengers travel between the two cities.

"Therefore, we will start carrying out the first direct flight as soon as possible to serve the passengers," he added.

The majority of travellers from Urmia to Erbil are Kurdish residents who usually pay a visit to the Kurdistan Region to see relatives, as a tourist, or other related concerns.

Meanwhile, people from Kurdistan often travel to the Iranian Kurdish city for different purposes, including medical treatment.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - The US government launched a $5 million-program for Iraqi airport security. It will provide both training and equipment in close coordination and partnership with experts at the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA), the US Consulate General in Erbil said on Thursday.

During remarks at the reception to launch the new program, the top US diplomat in Iraq, Chargé d'Affaires Joey Hood, said, “Airports are gateways to the world. This cooperative program will not only improve passenger safety for the Iraqi people, but will bolster Iraq’s ability to attract foreign investors, expand global trade linkages, and encourage economic growth.”

According to the Consulate, officials from the ICAA, Baghdad International Airport, Basrah International Airport, and Erbil International Airport have already met to discuss how to implement the program and continue to strengthen security at Iraqi airports to meet international standards.

“The launch of the program is an indication of Iraq’s expanding role in the global aviation community and underscores the U.S. commitment to help build a prosperous and diversified Iraqi economy, as outlined in the U.S.-Iraq Strategic Framework Agreement,” the statement issued by the Consulate General in Erbil affirmed.

This is the latest, prominent US-funded project in Iraq, whose infrastructure suffers from nearly forty years of sanctions and conflict, going back to Iraq’s war with Iran in the1980s and then Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait, two years after that war ended.

The most recent round of destruction comes from the war against the self-styled Islamic State, which, at its peak, controlled nearly one-third of Iraq.

Earlier, in mid-April, during a visit to Fallujah city, Hood announced that the US government intends to provide an additional $100 million to help stabilize liberated areas that were once held by the Islamic State.

With this $100 million contribution, the US government will have provided $358 million to stabilization efforts in Iraq since 2015.

Let’s see how long it takes them to get ticked off being repeatedly groped time and again by their version of the TSA. Hmm, wait a moment: Heck, they’ll probably be people lining up who aren’t even flying just hoping for the chance.

Never mind.
