Others are deliberately injuring themselves to dodge fighting on the frontline.

But Mosul Eye said the terror group – also known as ISIL – was no longer treating injured jihadis.

Some are simply downing their weapons and fleeing the advancing forces.

The dissident group said in recent days 36 ISIS fighters had been left to perish and deserters were also being executed by fanatics if caught.

Tweeting from Mosul, Mosul Eye revealed: “One fighter known as Abu Bakr Al-Ansari swore in front of other fighters that he will not fight anymore and escaped afterwards.

“Another fighter by the name of Mohammed Ali Sultan, aka Abu Salam, shot himself in the foot to avoid fighting.

“Many ISIL fighters on the west bank [of the Tigris river that divides the city] start to smuggle their families to the east bank to the liberated areas. They are ready to escape as well.”

Top Iraqi Commander: Mosul Could Be Liberated in 3 Months

  • By SUSANNAH GEORGE

IRBIL, Iraq — Jan 11, 2017, 3:56 AM ET

  • A top Iraqi commander told The Associated Press that the operation to retake the city of Mosul from the Islamic State group could be complete in three months or less.

"It's possible" that Mosul will be liberated in in that time frame, Lt. Gen. Talib Shaghati said in an interview with the AP on Tuesday evening. However, he warned it is difficult to give an accurate estimate of how long the operation will take because it is not a conventional fight.

"There are many variables," he said, describing the combat as "guerrilla warfare."

The massive offensive involving some 30,000 Iraqi forces was launched in October and Iraqi leaders originally pledged the city would be retaken before 2017. However as the fight enters its fourth month, only about a third of the city is under government control.

Iraqi forces — largely led by special forces — have slowly advanced across Mosul's east. Fierce IS counterattacks have killed and injured hundreds of Iraqi troops and inflicted considerable damage to Iraqi military equipment. Repeatedly, after what appeared to be swift progress on the ground, Iraqi forces have been pushed back by IS counterattacks overnight.

However, Shaghati said the counterattacks — specifically car bombings — have slowed. He estimated his forces are seeing less than half the number of IS car bomb attacks on the front than they were faced with when the operation first began.

The U.S.-led coalition bombed the bridges spanning the Tigris river connecting Mosul's east and west in November in an effort to stop the flow of car bombs to Iraqi frontline positions in the eastern half of the city.

Shaghati, the top commander of Iraq's special forces and the Commander of Iraq's Joint Military Operation said that while many forces are participating in the Mosul fight, Iraq's special forces are the only troops with the skills to fight IS.

"The forces who have the skills to fight guerrilla warfare is only the CTS," he said using an alternative acronym for Iraq's special forces who are also called the counter-terrorism forces. "They have flexibility and can act quickly," he said.

For the Mosul operation to continue, Shaghati said Iraqi forces need to continue to receive support and equipment from the U.S-led coalition. Since the Mosul operation began, the coalition says its planes have launched thousands of airstrikes in and around Iraq's second largest city.

Although Shaghati said he believes that the beginning of the Mosul operation marked the end of IS in Iraq, the country will likely struggle with terrorist threats long after IS is defeated in Mosul.

When asked if he expected levels of support to change when U.S. president-elect Donald Trump takes office this month, he said: "We believe that the support of our American friends is continuing and ongoing."

She said that the organization of the Islamic state 's supply lines between Tal Afar and Mosul still exist despite all the efforts of the Iraqi military, and the Iraqi forces are concentrated attack on the eastern side of Mosul, while exposed to counter attacks from state regulation from the western regions.

She pointed out that many Iraqis believe that the choice of the battle to regain the time of Mosul was part of the US outgoing President Barack Obama 's administration, so as to strengthen the position of Democratic candidate Hillarious Clinton in the US presidential election.
She concluded by saying that he was expected to recover Mosul by the end of 2016, but in 2017 began and no one knows when the battle will continue to sap much of Iraq 's resources and limit expires reconstruction and reconciliation in the country 's opportunities.

How does 3 districts take 3 months to liberate?

I watched a segment on Fox News a month or so ago which addressed the Mosul issue. The Iraqi gentleman (can't recall his name nor his position) showed a map of western Mosul and was explaining why it would take longer to liberate western Mosul than eastern Mosul. The buildings and streets are laid out in a more complicated way. It is difficult to put into words what he showed on the map,  but bottom line, there are more hiding places. Hope this helps answer your question just a bit.

Battle of Mosul: Iraq gaining momentum against al «Islamic state»

January 12, 2017 in the media center , articles  on the battle of Mosul: Iraq gaining momentum against al «Islamic state» closed

Is the Iraqi army announce that his forces reached the Tigris River for the first time during the battle to regain Mosul is an important moment in the ongoing campaign since 122 a week for the Liberation of the last great bastion of the organization «Islamic state» for ( «Daesh») in the country. The Lt. Gen. Abdul Amir al - Lami, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iraqi army operations, in a January 8 that "Iraqi security forces" captured the eastern edge of one of the bridges that connect both sides of the city.

It seems that it has been established stronghold in the municipalities located on the bank of the river , which includes many of the newest municipalities in the province of Mosul offices and "Peace Hospital" , which was the scene of the area for a bold attempt earlier taken by the Iraqi forces claw corridor up to the river. And north of the municipal area, the Second Brigade made of the "Iraqi Special Operations Forces" parallel progress towards the river in the old Muthanna neighborhood and monuments in Nineveh. It was also gains in the north - east of Mosul, where he tried the first and third brigades of the "Iraqi Special Operations Forces" Restore "Canadian" military base and neighborhoods adjacent to high - income.

Renewed effort

Make broad progress indicates the range to the resistance organization «Islamic state» show "signs of collapse" in the east of Mosul, as mentioned private international alliance against al «Daesh» Brett Macgork US president 's envoy in the tweet him on the site "Twitter" on 88 January /January. One of the factors causing clearly the concentration of all the "Iraqi security forces" available east of Mosul, after stopping all supporting attacks north and south west of the city. During the two-week break, it was moved elements "for the second rapid reaction brigade" and the Fifth Brigade of the "Federal Police" from areas located southwest of Mosul to new locations east of the Tigris. These forces have been reactivated attempts to "Iraqi security forces" to advance towards municipalities and bridges inside the city when the resumption of the attack on 29 December / December .

The catalyst role of the Alliance in another redraw the Iraqi battle plan, and to promote greater coordination between the Iraqi major centers and the provision of artillery and air strikes more effective. And requests enhance the firepower deployment defender "howitzer" US at the eastern border of the city of Mosul. It was to involve more than 400 component of the special coalition forces in the battle in the heart of the city counselors and coordinators for strikes, often within the scope of the attacks carried out by al «Islamic state».

Uphill battle to come

Operations will provide the steady progress eastern Mosul, a glimmer of light hello done at a time when the intervention uphill battle to regain the city its second week ten. Iraqi forces now have become present in 35 alive from the east of Mosul neighborhoods alive 47 guestrooms, including the largest departments, the most populous in the east side. Uphill battle waiting for Iraqi forces to restore the University of Mosul base "Canadian" military incidents eastern Mosul may be.

However, it did not edit any of the large and densely populated western Mosul, 29 dead guestrooms neighborhoods. Unless collapses organization «Islamic state» unexpectedly and fast, it will be necessary to attack the west side of the city in a separate military operation is launched a few weeks later arranged during which "the Iraqi security forces' ranks and put a new plan. This suggests that they may be cleansed in the east of Mosul in January 2017 or early February, while editing western Mosul, may extend to the second quarter of 2017.

Reduce costs

Serial cleansing multiple neighborhoods of the city of Mosul in reducing the period during which civilians are exposed to heavy fighting in individual neighborhoods may succeed. So far, the battle was caused to the infrastructure in Mosul , much less than those resulting from previous battles of attrition damage , as happened in Ramadi , in Iraq or in Kobani in Syria , despite the fact that the daily damage to neighborhoods has increased since the resumption of the attack. Alliance in particular has sought to reduce costs and the time required to rebuild the bridges, where the mayors are selectively destroyed the poles and exits of the roads that are easily replaced to prevent the organization «Islamic state» from the use of bridges, but he was keen to be a rapid repair possible after the battle ends.

He estimated " the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs , " the number of internally displaced persons from the city of Mosul itself by about 42 thousand in early November, about 4-66% of the population of Mosul , remaining far from a large number of estimates that preceded the battle and the lowest. The flow of internally displaced persons from the city since December 29 / December , according to the "United Nations Office" has increased, including 15,942 during the eight days that followed the resumption of the attack. But " the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs , " also announced that the stable security in the liberated areas has allowed the return of 14 thousand IDPs to the city of Mosul.

Attack "unwelcome"

Away from most media coverage, the liberated areas in eastern Mosul, witnessing a gradual return to maintain security and running water networks and power generation operating on diesel in the neighborhoods. And most importantly, that "the Iraqi security forces," the cross-sectarian and multi-ethnic located in the city of Mosul has received widespread acceptance of the local population of Sunni Arabs, who are grateful large humane treatment received by the population and the sacrifices of the security forces, which were submitted to the city of Mosul, the Sunni remote to the north of the country to liberate it from the grip of the organization «Islamic state.»

And will be responded organization «Islamic state» the most likely about the loss of eastern Mosul , in the efforts to intensify the bombings that target civilians in Baghdad, where he led seven bombings during the first eight days of 2017 to the fall of 87 people and injured at least 231 people. The Iraqi government and the coalition is currently building defenses around Baghdad by installing sensors on blimps tied , and the launch of obstructive in the rural outskirts of the city of security operations to dismantle the cells that the bombings.

US Commandos Take Out ISIS Leader in Hunt for Top Terrorists as Obama Prepares to Leave Office

WATCH Syria and Defeating ISIS: What Will Trump Do?

An elite team of American commandos killed a senior leader of ISIS this week, giving President Obama another name to scratch off his list of top terrorists in the final days of his presidency.

Abu Anas al-Iraqi, said to be the finance chief of ISIS, was killed Sunday in an operation in Syria by an intelligence-driven U.S. special operations unit known as the Expeditionary Targeting Force, a counterterrorism official told ABC News.

"He was a top ISIS emir," the counterterrorism official said, using the Arabic term for "prince" or "leader" that is commonly adopted by jihadis.

The U.S. hopes to also kill top ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the self-proclaimed caliph, or leader, of all Muslims, who is believed to be hunkered down in Iraq's second-largest city, Mosul. Iraqi government forces and a U.S.-led coalition mounted a stalled offensive to retake the city in recent months.

The official said that one other ISIS fighter was killed and that the U.S. team — under orders of the Joint Special Operations Command — conducted "sensitive site exploitation." Which means it looked for documents and electronic devices with intelligence value. No American operators were wounded.

The U.S. government has not publicly confirmed the terrorists' deaths.

At the Pentagon, spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis confirmed on Monday only that there was a "routine" U.S. special operations raid by the ETF in Dayr az Zawr, Syria, the day before and that it was "successful."

He said the operation was not intended to rescue hostages and no one was captured or detained, as has been reported on social media.

Al-Iraqi is not a well-known figure.

His name occasionally surfaced in social media as well as in captured ISIS documents referring to him as a leader, and intelligence indicated he was a member of ISIS' ruling shura council.

As chief accountant, he oversaw the group's war chest, derived from extortion, kidnapping and ransom, taxation in occupied territories, oil and gas sales and illicit trafficking, officials said.

The death of an ISIS operative of the same name was reported two years ago, but, like many other ISIS figures falsely reported killed, al-Iraqi — a nom de guerre — apparently remained alive and in the fight until this week.

The CIA declined comment today on his killing.

Al-Iraqi was killed shortly after U.S. special operations helicopters began trailing a single vehicle outside Dayr az Zawr and were fired on by the occupants of the vehicle, a third official told ABC News.

The helicopters fired back, disabling the vehicle and killing all the occupants.

The Obama administration has racked up a number of kills as he makes way for President-elect Trump to assume the responsibility of keeping Americans safe from terrorist attacks.

The dead include Hajji Mutazz, a deputy to al-Baghdadi; Abu Mohammad al-Adnani, ISIS' spokesman and external operations chief; and Abu Mohammed Furqan, an Iraqi member of the shura council who with al-Adnani oversaw the group's sophisticated, narrative-driven propaganda, which has shocked the world and drawn in tens of thousands of foreign volunteers since 2014.

The top Qaeda operative in Afghanistan, Nayef Salam Muhammad Ujaym al-Hababi, was killed in a U.S. airstrike last fall, and the top Taliban emir, Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, was killed in Pakistan by an American drone in May.

ABC News' Paul Blake contributed to this report.

There are political challenges facing Prime Minister Haider al - Abadi accompany the course of military operations for the liberation of Mosul , which seems that it will take longer than the deadline set by the leadership, according to a report published by the British magazine The Economist.
The magazine says that he initially said that the battle of Mosul will be resolved by the New Year 's holiday, but now the Prime Minister Haider al - Abadi is expected that the battle to liberate Mosul for another three months continue.
The attribution of more US special operations forces, Abadi launched the second phase of the battle to liberate Mosul , dominating the industrial zone of the city, where there has been some progress at this stage.
But what is controlled by Iraqi soldiers during the day often it is retrieved by militants from Daesh by darkness, where it will help them in the underground network that dug under the front lines.
On the other side of the security situation in Iraq, the organization also Daesh continuous implementation of the brutal style suicide attacks in Shiite areas of Baghdad. In Anbar and Salahuddin organization began a review of his muscles , too , after a period of liberalization regions.
On this January 2 militants took control regulation on a police station in Samarra for several hours, and were able to cut the road to Baghdad to Mosul briefly cut power to Diyala.
Prolonged military campaign Bttiyatha withstand the challenges facing political and Colva Abadi , who has sought from the outset , because out of the same administrator AC template to put the victorious commander of a strenuous military responsibilities.
While lurks competitors Balebadi chance it happens in an emergency problem to swoop in. Among those competitors is his predecessor , Nouri al - Maliki, as well as factions of the popular crowd , which was invited to participate in the fighting due to lack of many seasoned fighters in the ranks of the army and the Iraqi police. He welcomed the Americans until the military leaders to tip these alternative forces to support the troops in battle.
It seems that al - Maliki is eager to build a military force along the lines of Iran 's Revolutionary Guards , who owns a real power in Iran. During his tenure as prime minister, for the period from 2006 to 2014, al - Maliki was able to build networks still provide him with power and influence so far. This network extends from the judiciary to the civil institutions and the parliament, and there are a lot of people with senior positions in Iraq carrying him credit for the arrival of the positions they occupy.
The last work by al - Maliki as prime minister is seeking to form a popular crowd forces. While he was, trying, for many months furrow - Abbadi accused the authority of his senior ministers of failing, recently taken by making support for PDF crowd turn another.
On November 26 last, vote for members of parliament on the popular crowd, which includes more than 110 thousand elements Forces Act, pay their salaries from the government, and is subject to the control of Parliament.
In contrast Abadi began using the new popular crowd courting Sunni tribes who previously renounced al - Maliki when he was prime minister Act. The Abadi return of thousands of officers and soldiers of the former Iraqi army from the Sunnis and the buyout of government salaries under the leadership of the former governor of Mosul Liberation of Iraq.
On the other hand, has been quietly, dropped terrorism charges filed against the Sunni politician , backed by Gulf Khamis dagger. And the blessing of al - Abadi also headed by Ammar al - Hakim, who heads the largest Shiite bloc in the country, to Amman and Tehran to negotiate the steps to achieve national reconciliation include amnesty for exiled Sunni figures long ago.
The hope lies in that if the granting of these promises in the future of Iraq, the former Baathists and other Sunni Islamist rest of the characters would be involved in efforts to expel troops from Iraq Daesh lineup.
He says a diplomat in Baghdad said that "some Shiite figures have begun to realize that if they were not able to gain the trust of the Sunnis and the Kurds, what remains of Iraq will be in danger of becoming the state and the province of another Iran."
The main Abadi is a failure of political failure. He was unable to break the control of the sectarian parties, including his own party, the treasury of Iraq 's resources. Political parties in his booth is still deducted large amounts of government contracts, and collect money from aliens workers in laboratories and institutions of dead salaries unproductive.
Instead of prosecuting political corruption has squandered Abadi support granted him of demonstrators against corruption as well as the religious authority and deduct the salaries of employees and raising the tax rate.
But despite all these setbacks , Abadi was able to retrieve most of the territory it lost during the reign of his predecessor , al - Maliki. Within also renewed US military support and saw the stage to increase the number of US troops quadrupled their number over the past year. There became an air force depends upon the special operations squad proved its capabilities in the fighting, and the Iraqi army for the first time in the era of al - Abadi in a decade have begun to fight side by side with the Kurdish Peshmerga forces.
As well as with regard to aspects of social life in the capital , Baghdad has begun to return to normal stability , which saw some areas and streets raising the concrete barriers and the elimination of some of the checkpoints. But the taint of the Iraqi economy now drop oil prices and heavy spending on the management of the ongoing battles against the organization in Mosul crisis.
But nonetheless, the Iraqi economy , which fell by 5% in 2016 and 14% in the previous year is expected to rise as the IMF forecast by 5% this year. And that US companies that previously left the country because of the economic problems which have begun to re - refer to it again , such as General Electric Company.
Even in Parliament, there is an unusual alliances began to emerge fleeting sectarian lines. The Kurds, Sunni Arabs and Shiites no longer vote for a unified blocks. The head of parliament Saleem al - Jubouri, a Sunni of the Islamic Party, talks about the formation of a transient Party of sectarianism in the elections of 2018 in which voters seeking voices from the Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq.
Despite all the failures, Iraq is still considered the most democratic, multi - party countries in the Arab world, have convinced the majority of the Iraqi people that they have a common future in this country.

The Major Abdalkareem Khalaf, a military export confirmed to PUKmedia on Thursday, 12 of Jan. that the terrorists of Islamic State had declared their withdrawal from the eastern side of Mosul, their last major stronghold in Iraq.
Mr. Khalaf stressed that the Iraqi forces shall liberate the eastern side of Mosul within two days, "ISIS terrorists had transported their weapons and equipments to the western dire to increase their enforcements" he added.
Islamic State's loss of Mosul would probably spell the end of the Iraqi part of its self-styled caliphate, which straddles Iraq and Syria.
But advances inside Mosul slowed in November and December as troops engaged in tough urban warfare with the jihadists, who are thought to number several thousand in the city.
The ISIS fought back with suicide car bombs and snipers hidden among the civilian population. They have also recently blown up sections of two bridges crossing the Tigris to try to slow the Iraqi advance.

Iraqi Forces Breach ISIS Stronghold in Mosul

After strategic shift to retake university campus, commanders claim progress against Islamic State

The campus is one of the two main facilities in Mosul that U.S. and Iraqi officials said the militants used to build bombs, develop chemical weapons and treat wounded fighters. Iraqi forces seized the other facility, a hospital, last week.

“If they lose the campus, their fighters and supporters will lose their morale. For them, losing the campus means losing the eastern side of the city,” said Gen. Sami al-Aridi, a commander with the forces leading the push into the university.

Col. John Dorrian, spokesman for the U.S.-led international coalition battling Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, said the progress at the university and other parts of eastern Mosul indicated Islamic State’s “days in Mosul are quickly coming to an end.”

The university campus has repeatedly come under Iraqi and U.S.-led airstrikes since last year.

Iraq has made plodding progress in the battle for Mosul, with gains measured in streets rather than miles.

The breach of the campus suggested Iraqi troops were gaining momentum. The university covers as much territory as a typical neighborhood in Mosul—but one rife with militants and devoid of civilians, Iraqi officials said. Iraqi forces so far have taken several buildings, including dorms and the technical college, officials said on Friday.

The Mosul campaign began on Oct. 17 and initially moved along the southern, eastern and northern edges of the city. But the fight got bogged down by late November. Militants put up a tough fight in the densely populated neighborhoods of eastern Mosul, where most residents stayed in their homes at the encouragement of the Iraqi government and out of fear for the perils of fleeing. Some 100,000 out of the estimated 1.5 million in the city and its surrounding towns have fled.

The presence of the civilians, along with insufficient numbers of elite troops to wage intricate urban warfare, has led to heavy casualties, commanders and medical workers said. By mid-December, Iraqi advances in the city ground to a halt.

Late last month, commanders brought well-trained police SWAT units from the southern edges of the city into the east to fight in tandem with the counterterrorism forces. They also reduced the role of armored tank divisions that proved to be too lumbering to wage urban combat.

At the same time, Islamic State ability to build and equip car bombs, their most deadly weapon, was depleted by the loss of bomb making factories to Iraqi forces and the lack of willing suicide bombers, Iraqi officials said.

The changes have led to rapid advances toward the Tigris in recent days, said Gen. Maan al-Saadi, a senior officer with the U.S.-trained Counterterrorism Division. “This has reduced the enemy’s pressure on our troops,” he said.

The benefits came into focus last week, when newly deployed troops from the Emergency Response Division, a police SWAT force, reclaimed the large Al-Salam Hospital complex in about six hours.

The hospital had been an Islamic State base and was the site of a withering ambush of Iraqi Army troops last month, which led to the reconsideration of the battle plan. The Army’s 9th Armored Division had made a bold raid on the massive facility, but hours later militants ambushed the force. They had to be rescued by counterterrorism units and U.S. airstrikes on the hospital.

Commanders said the episode highlighted the need for more nimble forces that rely less on heavy weapons and tanks.

“It was a step-by-step approach,” Brig. Gen. Abbas al-Jubouri of the Emergency Response Division said of last week’s success in wresting back the strategic facility.

The 7-storey main building of the hospital campus is the highest in eastern Mosul and has panoramic views of the entire city. Militants there, with unfettered visibility, had built sniper nests in the windows of the stairwells.

During a visit to the hospital on Friday, some ammunition and weapons, including rocket tubes, were left scattered on the ground near medicines and adult diapers that remained stacked neatly on the shelves.

How does 3 districts take 3 months to liberate?

Who knows? Maybe the answer lies in the same book as why, ( and HOW) if the U.S. has a 19 trillion dollar deficit, we can afford to send billions upon billions to other countries??
