Nearly 3 years after Da'ish took the city... #Iraq's flag has been raised above #Mosul's government buildings

[Synopsis]

Looks like 43 of the 56 districts in Mosul have been taken back from ISIS and, hopefully, ISIS will not regain any of these districts or make incursions into the retaken districts. 43/56 districts is nominally 75%. As more districts are taken, likely ISIS combatants will concentrate in the remaining ISIS controlled areas. I suspect the food rations necessary to help keep them fighting as well as the medical supplies will dwindle rapidly. Not so good for the non ISIS residents in these areas. However, I can't imagine ISIS retaining a substantial control of the non ISIS residents and, hopefully, the non ISIS residents have a way of escape to non ISIS held areas in Mosul and these displaced people can get the necessary housing and food they need as well as medical attention where necessary.  If significant numbers of the non ISIS residents have fled, then the concentrated ISIS combatants should be easier to identify and track with accelerated losses of ISIS combatants ensuing.  I suspect the remaining fighting in Mosul will be the most intense yet but could go more quickly as ISIS food stores, medical supplies, and munitions/IEDs deplete rapidly.  The humanitarian crisis from the displaced peoples may be mostly resolving food supplies for the non ISIS Mosul residents since they should be able to return to their homes in retaken areas provided their homes have not be significantly destroyed.

As others have pointed out, the retaking of all of Mosul should be much less than the three months time frame noted by Abadi.  Once Mosul is cleaned up, the Iraqi troops can redeploy to the remaining areas in Iraq held by ISIS.  I suspect that clean up should go fairly rapidly and Iraq will very soon be free of any ISIS controlled areas.  Maybe the 10th of January for the return of the Parliament bears some significance?  The National Reconciliation will likely need a very high priority for passing and implementation with all the other necessary reforms needing passing nipping at the heels of the National Reconciliation.

I believe that there will be a significant amount of ISIS combatants who surrender.  I understand ISIS has made a point of torturing and executing those who do so, but when the last of these rats are cornered, without any back up or reinforcements, my bet is on their innate inner sense of cowardice.  I doubt that they will even think about what awaits them in prison or the post-war courts, these animals will wave white flags and beg for much undeserved mercy.  

I hope that God Himself is supervising their demise, and wish them quick painless deaths.  I doubt whether Iraqi soldiers and citizen survivors will feel the same.

Alsumaria News / Nineveh confirmed the Nineveh provincial council member Hossam El Din Al Abbar, Tuesday, joint control of Iraqi forces to 80% of the left coast city of Mosul , noting that only eight districts is not released until now.  Alabbar said in an interview with Alsumaria's News, said that " the fight against terrorism and the Iraqi army and federal police forces tightened their grip on 80% of the left coast after the liberation of new neighborhoods east of Mosul , " noting that " the joint forces destroyed the capabilities of the organization Daesh terrorist, and that the coming days will witness the announcement of vacancy left coast of Daesh. "         Alabbar said that " the remaining neighborhoods in the left coast of eight, are sugar, Muthanna, unity and Sumer and Dumez, financial and garage north and Algeria , " pointing to "cut off all supplies to Daesh in those neighborhoods."  Alabbar said that "elements Daesh began to flee from the face of the Iraqi forces and sought refuge at their dirty methods in the bombing of neighborhoods liberated and the use of car bombs and suicide attacks."  The Federal Police announced on Tuesday (January 32 017), for monitoring the exodus of the elements of the organization "Daesh" of the unit neighborhood southeast of Mosul.  The military announced the media cell, today announced the editor of the opposition area commercial complex on the left coast of the city of Mosul, also announced edit industrial zone and the "Mercedes" and flour mill in the Karama district east of Mosul.

UN: 125,000 Iraqis have been displaced since the start of Mosul regain control of the city process

 

 

 

The United Nations said on Wednesday that about 125,000 Iraqis have been displaced since the start of Mosul regain control of the city from the Daesh gangs in October the process.

14,000 out of 125,000 displaced people have returned to their homes in Mosul.  This is another piece of extremely good news!  Although more will be displaced as ISIS continues to be exterminated, the clean up of areas destroyed because of the ISIS extermination aught to be progressing with more displaced people returning soon.  Water and electricity restored will make conditions livable especially with the new found freedom from ISIS and support from the Iraqi government and international aide groups.

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) A U.S. military force that was denied entry to an area in Salahuddin province was heading there for training purposes, Iraqi Joint Operations Command said Sunday.

The command said in a statement that the force which was blocked by a militia affiliated with al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units), was accompanying Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service personnel for a training on sniping and artillery.

On Saturday, PMU spokesman, Ahmed al-Assadi, said fighters from Hezbollah al-Nojabaa, obstructed the U.S. force at Makhoul mountains area because the militia was not notified of their arrival. He said contacts were made with the army command in Salahuddin who ordered the regiment to retreat to an earlier location.

A US-led coalition is backing Iraqi forces and allied militias with an aerial cover in the ongoing battles with Islamic State militants. The Iraqi government has reiterated that coalition forces on the ground were merely intended for consultation and training purposes.

PMUs were formed in 2014 in line with an edict made by Iraq’s top Shia clergy to combat Islamic State militants who had taken over large areas of the country to establish a self-proclaimed “Islamic Caliphate”. They have been actively involved in a major campaign was been running to retake IS’s last major stronghold, Mosul, since mid October 2016.

Khansa Maternity Hospital.

 

 

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Members of the Islamic State extremist group set a maternity hospital and some buildings of the University of Mosul ablaze, before withdrawing from them, BasNews reported on Sunday.

Commander of Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Forces, Abdel Wahab al-Saedi, in a press statement said, “The Islamic State group burned al-Khansa Maternity Hospital, as well as the buildings of faculties of Dentistry, Education, Arts and Economy in the University of Mosul, before withdrawing from them, due to the significant development achieved by security forces in the area.”

So far, Iraqi forces have retaken around 70 percent of eastern Mosul from the Islamic State militants. However, the western half of the city remains under the full control of Islamic State, which is fighting to hold on to its largest stronghold with snipers and suicide car bombs.
