PKK Deploying Forces, Heavy Weapons from Syria to Sinjar: Peshmerga Command

PKK Deploying Forces, Heavy Weapons from Syria to Sinjar: Peshmerga Command

ERBIL — After the military confrontations between Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)-affiliated forces and Peshmerga forces near Sinjar last Friday, PKK continues to deploy reinforcement equipped with heavy weapons from Syria to the border Khanasor in the Kurdistan Region, said General Command of Peshmerga Forces.

It believes that the new deployment of PKK forces to the Kurdistan Region territories is to “increase tensions”.

Concerning the Friday clashes during which PKK-affiliated Sinjar Resistance Units (YBS) attacked Roj Peshmerga forces near Sinjar, the General Command of Peshmerga said the offensive occurred after the YBS and Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) blocked Peshmerga forces from a routine deployment to control the porous border and prevent widespread smuggling.

However, the statement reveals, “Peshmerga commanders delayed the deployment near Snune in favor of talks with local PKK commanders to lessen tensions and prevent violence. After second round of talks the two PKK commanders, Agid Jeviyan and Zaki Shingali, originally from Turkey with zero connections to Sinjar, confirmed that without approval from PKK's leadership in Qandil Mountains, they were powerless to make decisions.”

“Sinjar and its surrounding areas remain part of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq more generally. PKK has, for a long time now, illegally positioned fighters in the area against the wishes of Yazidis and the Kurdistan Region.”

“This is underpinned by group's well-known authoritarian policies, including in Syrian Kurdistan, or Rojava, imposing themselves against locals.”

The Peshmerga General Command also reveals that many PKK fighters in and around Sinjar continue to receive funding from Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), better known as the Shi’ite militia group of Hashd al-Shaabi.

“The Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs has embraced at least 8,000 Yazidi fighters based in and around Sinjar as part of an effort to give Yazidis autonomy over security affairs. It's also in talks to accept more,” the statement continues. “PKK affiliates remain the only armed factions operating outside of official military and security institutions.”

The statement makes it clear that Kurdistan Region “will not accept any faction to create ungoverned or armed fiefdoms. It does not intend to enter an armed conflict.”

Over 300 Yezidi Families Displaced by Latest Clashes in Sinjar

Over 300 Yezidi Families Displaced by Latest Clashes in Sinjar

SINJAR — More than 300 Yezidi families in Sinuni subdistrict in Sinjar became displaced due to the recent armed confronations between a group afiliated to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and Roj Peshmerga forces in the area.

Naif Saido, Mayor of Sinuni, confirmed to BasNews that the latest clashes between PKK and Pehsmerga displaced over 300 families.

"The situation is stable now, but people are still scared. Over 300 families have left home and settled in the holy sites of Sharfadin and Shishmis as a result of the tensions PKK has created in the area," Saido said.

"It is yet unclear whether the displaced families will return home due to their fear of PKK," he said.

The official added that more people will face displacement if PKK continues to operate in the district.

Early on Friday, armed confrontations broke out between the Roj Peshmerga forces and Sinjar Resistance Units (YBS), a PKK-affiliated group, near Sinuni subdistrict of Sinjar in which two YBS fighters were killed with several others injured on both sides.

The incident deeply concerned the Yezidi people in Sinjar who are still suffering from the atrocities they faced at the hands of the Islamic State (IS) militants in August 2014.

Following the incident, the Yezidi Spiritual Assembly and Yezidi world representative called on the PKK forces to step out of Sinjar.

The PKK guerrillas entered Sinjar in the wake of the IS attack on the district and they have since refused to leave the area despite the frequent calls of the Yezidis and Kurdistan Region officials for their withdrawal.

It was originally reported that up to 70 Peshmerga fighters who refused to engage the Yazidi’s in battle days ago in Iraq’s north, were detained by the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) intelligence known as the Parastin.

Hawar News Agency (ANHA) reported that the intelligence of the KDP transferred the detained fighters to the Turkish intelligence MIT.

They also revealed that it was 80 Peshmerga fighters who were arrested and not 70.

The 80 people, originally from Syria’s north in area that the Kurds mislabel as “Rojava”, were transferred to Turkey through the Khabur border crossing.

“There was a mobilization of ambulances during their transfer. We are therefore concerned over their lives”, said the source.

Meanwhile, ANF News identified four out of the 80 people KDP handed over to the Turkish MIT as;

– Nêçîrvan Mihemed Silêman from Qamishli,

– İzzettin İsa Derwîş from Hasakeh,

– Delîl Emo from Hasakeh,

– Şiyar İsmet Xelîl from Afrin.

PKK Against Sinjar to Be Annexed to Kurdistan Region: Commander

SINJAR — Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) will be standing against Kurdistan Region's independence at any cost and they are preparing for war against the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, said commander of PKK-affiliated forces in Sinjar known as Sinjar Resistance Units (YBS).

In an interview with the Afaq News Channel, close to Iraqi Shi’ite politician Nouri al Maliki, the commander said the last Friday’s confrontations in Sinjar was a war between the Kurdish Peshmerga and Iraqi forces.

PKK has stationed its forces in Sinjar to protect the region’s Iraqi identity, said commander Sa’id Hassan, claiming that the Peshmerga forces had intended to annex Sinjar, Tel Affar and other areas to Kurdistan Region before they declare independence from Iraq.

“This is not acceptable for us,” the PKK commander stressed out.

The controversial statement comes after a group of PKK-affiliated YBS forces opened fire at a Roj Peshmerga brigade in Khansor subdistrict of Sinjar last Friday, sparking a deadly clash which lasted for hours.

However, the PKK commander has made it clear that the war has not ended as the issue remains unsolved up to the moment. “It has only been halted,” he added.

MAKHMOUR — The mayor of Makhmour has rejected reports claiming that Kurdistan Region Peshmerga forces and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) guerrillas have set up military lines against each other in the district.

Rizgar Muhammed confirmed to BasNews that the forces from both sides are on their previous positions with no mobilization notices in the area.

“The situation is stable and as before. We hope no unwanted issues arise,” he added.

According to the information and photographs obtained by BasNews, PKK has also established around 20 military posts on Qarachogh mountain near Makhmour, hoping to further expand its military influence in the area.

PKK Retains Money Collected for Yezidi Victims: Official
ERBIL — Lalish Cultural and Social Center for Yezidis in Sinjar revealed that Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) used the financial aid they collected for Yezidis in Europe to buy a building in Bielefeld city in Germany for the party's media.

Khalat Sheikh Murad, Head of the Lalish Cultural and Social Center, said "when the Sinjar catastrophe took place in August 2014, the PKK began to collect financial assistance for the Yezidis," noting that "PKK notified them about 1.25 million euros (approximately $1.324 million) they had collected for the Yezidi victims, however, the assistance was never delivered to Yezidis."

"According to our information, PKK has used the money to buy building in Bielefeld city in Germany for its media outlets," Murad said. However, the city's municipality did not allow the building to be utilized for the media purposes, he added.

He explained that PKK collected the money from the Kurdish community in Germany.

Apart from the genocide of Sinjar by the Islamic State (IS) extremist group in 2014, PKK also raised 500,000 euros ($529,678) for the Yezidi victims of the 2007 terrorist attacks in Siba Sheikh Khidir and Gir Uzeir areas in Sinjar, but in the same pattern, PKK retained the money, Murad divulged.

He added that some political sides are not ashamed of exploiting the Yezidi genocide for their own interests.

PKK commander says resumption of clashes in Sinjar would create Kurdish civil war

07/03/2017
1-32.jpg
A top commander of the armed wing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Iraq’s northern Sinjar area has warned that if clashes resume between his militia and the Peshmerga, the fighting forces of the ruling political party in Iraq’s Kurdistan, that would spread across the entire region.

Speaking to Kurdish daily Yeni Ozgur Politika on Sunday, Egid Civyan told the Kurdish daily Yeni Ozgur Politika on Sunday that they will take full precautions against possible clashes.

“All the people of Kurdistan should know this: resumption of clashes in Shingal [Sinjar] will not just remain here but spread across Kurdistan. If Kurdish people do not take a stand against the Turkish state and KDP’s mercenaries then we will be faced with losses for another hundred years.”

The ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and its associated Peshmerga forces, dominate Iraq’s Kurdistan and has healthy and functioning ties with Turkey. Turkey recognizes the PKK as a terrorist group.

The commander also claimed that the Peshmerga forces who had arrived in the Khanasor neighbourhood of Sinjarwere not really Peshmerga fighters but mercenaries trained by the Turkish government, Kom News reported.

“The way they came here and deployed, their arms, vehicles and numbers revealed their true intentions. When they began preparing to attack, the YBS (Yazidi Shingal Resistance Units) approached them for dialogue. But they reacted angrily and threatened the YBS fighters,” Civyan said.

The commander also rejected claims by Peshmerga Forces Spokesperson Helgurd Hikmat that their forces had been prevented from entering the area.

“Peshmerga forces have never been prevented in areas under the control of the YBS or PKK. But these mercenaries are paramilitary gangs; there are former ISIS and Al-Nusra members responsible for the Yazidi genocide amongst them, as well as elements who participated in the war against Kurds in northern Kurdistan (southeast Turkey).”

Baghdad Supports PKK to Create Tension in Sinjar: Mayor

SINJAR — The central government in Baghdad is encouraging the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) to create tension in the Yezidi town of Sinjar, said the mayor of the city.

Mahma Khalil told BasNews on Wednesday that the recent military confrontations between the PKK affiliates and Peshmerga forces in Khansor subdistrict of Sinjar were provoked by the Iraqi central government in a bid to prevent the Yezidi areas join the Kurdistan Region.

Khalil believes that the majority of Kurdish Yezidis will vote in favor of joining the Kurdistan Region if a referendum is held.

PYD Arrests Dozens of Politicians from Rival Parties

ERBIL — The ruling Democratic Union Party (PYD) continues to detain politicians and activists from the rival political parties across the Syrian Kurdistan, better known as Rojava in Kurdish.

According to the information obtained by BasNews, at least 42 people have been recently arrested by the Syrian Kurdish internal security forces affiliated with the PYD.

BasNews has also prepared a list of the detained politicians and activists, most of whom are members of the Syrian Kurdish National Council (ENKS) or Kurdistan Democratic Party of Syria (KDP-S).

The opposition parties blame PYD of undemocratic policies, pressure on rival parties and preventing them from having a role in the region’s political process.

The arrests have been stepped up by PYD after the eruption of military conflicts between the Sinjar Resistance Units (YBS) — an affiliated group to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) — and the Roj Peshmerga forces near Sinjar, northern Iraq.

PYD is said to be PKK’s offshoot in Syria.

PKK Presence in Kurdistan Against Iraqi Constitution: Official

ERBIL — Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) presence in Kurdistan Region is not legal, said a Kurdish official.

“According to the Iraqi constitution, the presence of any armed forces in Kurdistan Region, outside the control of Peshmerga Ministry, is against law and not allowed,” Halgord Hikmat, Peshmerga Ministry spokesperson, told Kurdistan24.

The PKK has begun an armed struggle mainly against the Turkish government since 1984; however, after 33 years, the party is yet to make any significant progress in the case of Kurds in Turkey. PKK’s main stronghold is located in Kurdistan Region’s Qandil mountainous areas, although its affiliates are operating in other areas of Kurdistan Region.

Head of Kurdistan Region’s Department of Foreign Relations, Falah Mustafa, has also commented on the issue, stressing that every Kurdish political party from other parts of Kurdistan must comply with the laws of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) as long as they are stationed in the Kurdish region.
