The ruins of Babylon .. a promising tourist destination

03/6/2018 12:00 am

 Walid Khalid Al-Zaidi
The tourism sector in Iraq has witnessed a significant interest in the past years, but it was not at the level of this sector of abundant possibilities at the level of cultural considerations that characterized the country for a long time, especially in historical sites, As well as the economic field and the huge material revenues it reflects. It does not stop at this point but extends to other serious factors which also fall within the framework of the country's economic policy, which has a great influence in this regard.
First, we should point to an important factor: the rush of government institutions to adopt reforms that reinforce the historical and material considerations of the province of Babylon, reconstruct and develop its reality. Experience has shown a clear shift in order of priorities at the working level, a methodology that is supposed to follow measures to enhance the tourist reality of Babylon's historical site, To establish the Iraqi openness to the
different countries of the world  .
It is useful to note the importance of investing the reputation of Iraq, the center of the world's first civilization, and includes on its territory the first breakthroughs of the human mind in urbanization and development, and enjoy the civilization of Babylon of the reputation of the city has not become the world's most important destinations of international tourism to various countries of the world, Of the emphasis on the stable security situation for all cities of Iraq, including areas of the province of Babylon and its eternal effects
.
It is believed that a new situation will be occupied by Iraq in the map of world tourism after the liberation of cities from the "dacha" and the stability of the situation, and have already embarked on ambitious programs for economic reform in this province, and the reconstruction of the foundations of the project within the promising projects that will highlight the bright face of the ancient city, In addition to its plan to develop its economic reality, three projects have been opened in the center of the governorate, headed by Marina Water City, with various tourism and recreational facilities, an important commercial complex, as well as another service complex and those projects, at a cost of $ 7.5 million , In addition to plan for The opening of 15 investment projects in the province, all aimed at strengthening the reality of urbanization, and to approach international and local companies to establish other projects in the
 province.
It is important to highlight the civilized face of the ancient province and to establish a region for craftsmen and industrialists in one place because these projects raise priorities of another type, the most important of which is the creation of a national vision to protect tourism sector programs and to embody its role as one of the tributaries of national economic development. Or pension or service can contribute to obstructing projects to rehabilitate the tourism sector in Iraq, as it will contribute to expand the chances of success of this sector and contribute to the provision of job opportunities for the unemployed Babil and the rest of the provinces, but the most important can be returned by those projects and through these a Look, strengthen the approach to economic policy reform and through the pillars that can be provided by the historic city of Babylon tourism in Iraq and to confront dilemmas and issues that disrupt the process to take advantage of our civilization symbols  of
ancient.
Finally, we say that a comprehensive review of the experiences of the countries of the world in promoting tourism sector is necessary in an objective manner, an open mind and a clear vision. The important thing is to combine plans with deeds and implement projects that benefit the economic, commercial and human sectors.

fit

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has begun assessing the damage of the Nuri al-Kabeer mosque in Mosul, northern Iraq, in preparation for its restoration.

The mosque witnessed the only public appearance of the leader of the "da'ash" Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, when he announced from his platform in the summer of 2014 what he called the "state of succession".

The head of the education committee in the Nineveh province (Mosul), Seydou Hussein, told the Anatolia agency that a UNESCO committee inspected the mosque and its minaret "Al-Hadba".

Hussain added that the committee documented the damage and limited the need to reconstruct the mosque and the minaret according to the historical style.
Noting that preliminary estimates of the delegation of "UNESCO" indicates that the mosque, and minaret need to three years for restoration.

He explained that the cost is initially estimated at about $ 50 million, and also includes the development of basic infrastructure surrounding the two sites.

He noted that the organization is determined to implement the first steps of the project, over the next three months.

The Nuri Mosque or the Grand Mosque is one of Iraq's historic mosques. It is located on the western side of Mosul. It was built by Nur al-Din Zanki in the 6th century AH.

The mosque is the second mosque built in Mosul after the Umayyad Mosque, and was reconstructed several times, the most recent in 1944.

The 9-century-old Minaret al-Hadba was the only surviving monument of the historic building of the historic mosque. It was also decorated with geometric patterns of bricks and is a symbol of the city of Mosul. Its image was printed on a 10,000-dinar banknote.

The mosque was known for its convex light towards the east. The word "humpba" is usually associated with Mosul, and the lighthouse is one of its most prominent monuments.

Shortly before losing the city, the organization of the Nuri mosque mosque and its humpback on 21 June 2017 were destroyed. The organization's militants blew up the archaeological site with highly explosive material, which led to the settlement of the land.

The marshes of Iraq appeal after being listed on the World Heritage List
[Ayna-Baghdad] The
low level of water in the marshlands in southeastern Iraq threatens the lack of natural resources, the deterioration of the livelihoods of the people of these areas and the spread of epidemics.
Water levels in natural water bodies fell to a third of 1.35 meters.
"The salinity of the water has risen to almost double, which is so dangerous for the decline of water," said Raad Habib, head of the Chabaish Environmental Tourism Organization.
"These damages must be solved by the state, such as the provision of water releases through agreement with other countries, and the prevention of unauthorized abuses, such as fish lakes and agriculture, despite the state's ban, but some insist on agriculture."
The lack of water is due in part to a decline in the priority of agriculture in the central government and decades of mismanagement of water resources. Ankara's entry into the Tigris River behind the Elso dam last month had a clear impact.
Marsh Arabs live amidst a flat, grassy land where grass grows near the border with Iran and use wooden boats with engines to cross waterways.
The marshes feed the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, making it a vast fishing area and habitat for various types of domestic and migratory birds between Siberia and Africa.
The Marshlands covered an area of 9,000 square kilometers in the 1970s, but shrunk to 760 square kilometers by 2002. By September 2005, about 40 percent of the original area had been restored. Iraq says it "aims to restore 6,000 square kilometers Gross ".
Two years ago, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) included the marshes on its World Heritage List.

Environment Dhi Qar calls to address UNESCO to pressure the upstream countries to ensure the share of marshes of water
[Ayna-Dhi Qar]
The Environment Department of Dhi Qar called on the federal government to address the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to put pressure on the countries of the rivers to ensure the share of marshes from water.
"The marshes of the province and after its inclusion in the World Heritage List have become part of UNESCO's patronage and interest, and it must assume its role by pressing the upstream countries to ensure adequate water for them," said Dhi Qar Environment Director Mohsen Aziz in a press statement.
Aziz said that "the Marshlands, about two years after its accession to the World Heritage List, suffer from the drought of large areas and the lack of manifestations of biodiversity in them."
He said that "the inclusion of the marshes and the old cities of Iraq within the global list is an important achievement for the province of Dhi Qar, especially for Iraq in general and must be maintained and supported by all efforts."
Two years ago, UNESCO listed four archipelagic and archaeological sites within the World Heritage List because of its natural and historical value in natural and cultural heritage.

During their occupation of Iraq, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) deliberately destroyed and looted much of the country's rich archaeological history.

Now, conservation and security experts from Iraq and the European Union are trying to save what is left and to build a database to track down and return stolen artefacts to Iraq.
