Trump’s New Hard-Line Aides Worry Muslims, but Some See an Upside

ERBIL, Iraq — Many Muslims in the Middle East reacted with a mix of fear, caution, suspicion and scorn on Friday to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s appointments of aides with hostile views toward Islam.

From Iraq and Syria and Lebanon and elsewhere, a range of people already skeptical about Mr. Trump said their doubts were only reinforced by announcements that senior security positions in his administration would be filled with figures like Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn, known for his outspoken antipathy toward Muslims.

“Trump chose @GenFlynn as his National Security Advisor. We must not shy away from comparing his anti-Muslim rhetoric to that of the Nazis,” Joey Ayoub, a well known Lebanese blogger, said on Twitter. He echoed the trepidation about General Flynn’s now-famous Twitter post that “fear of Muslims is rational.”

Struggling to understand what Mr. Trump’s ascent means for them and their war-ravaged region, some, however, expressed hope that he will confront militant Islamist extremists far more aggressively than the Obama administration has done.

Yet others fear that Mr. Trump’s views — and his reliance cabinet appointees who have expressed anti-Islam views — will be exploited as a recruiting tool by Islamic State operatives and other violent militants.

Mr. Trump’s suspicions toward Muslims “reinforces and ratifies the jihadist worldview,” said Charlie Winter, a senior research fellow at the International Center for the Study of Radicalization and Political Violenceat King’s College in London. “Jihadists are always looking for evidence of this conspiracy against Islam.”

He said General Flynn’s elevation in particular “is deeply, deeply worrying.”

In Iraq, where modern history has been profoundly shaped by the decisions of American presidents, officials and citizens alike are weighing Mr. Trump’s harsh words against his promise to defeat terrorism.

Surprisingly, some Iraqis seemed less offended by Mr. Trump’s comments linking terrorism to Islam than American liberals.

Iraqis have endured years of Islam being used to justify mass killing, and some see Mr. Trump as a:lol: truth-teller:lol: in calling out Islam — or a certain brand of it — as the problem.

Iraqi Shiites say they believe Mr. Trump will take a harder line on Saudi Arabia, the Sunni power that many see as the incubator of the extreme form of Islam, Wahhabism, that forms a basis of the Islamic State’s ideology.

“The victory of Trump is the beginning of the end of extremist Islam and Wahhabism,” said Mouwafak al-Rubaie, an Iraqi lawmaker and the country’s former national security adviser.

In Mr. Trump’s vow to defeat terrorism many Iraqis say they have hope that decisive American power will be marshaled to eradicate the Islamic State, the extremist group also known as ISIS, which has brutalized parts of Iraq, Syria and Libya and plotted attacks on the West

“We have no concerns about the policy of Trump because he is against extremism,” said Saad al-Hadithi, the spokesman for Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi of Iraq. “We think we are facing one enemy, and that is fighting ISIS. Therefore, I do not think there are fears or concerns about a new American policy.”

On Friday, Mr. Abadi spoke by phone with Mr. Trump for the first time, and a statement released by the prime minister’s office said the two leaders affirmed their cooperation against the Islamic State. Mr. Trump told Mr. Abadi, “you are essential partners to us and you will find strong and deep support.”

But Mr. Trump’s invective against Muslims during the campaign, and his apparent intent to put those feelings into policy with his appointments, represented a deep betrayal to the many Iraqis who worked as translators alongside the American military in Iraq, and have dreamed of immigrating to the United States under a special visa program that will now be in jeopardy.

“Though six years have passed, I was still hoping to get a call at any moment that would represent the fulfillment of the promise they made to me,” said Ali Najam Abdullah, who worked as an interpreter for the American military in Anbar Province for five years.

He said seeing Mr. Trump win the presidency, “has given me a clear image that dream has totally vanished.”

Some local leaders in areas of Iraq that have known firsthand the Islamic State’s brutality expressed alarm that an American government seen as virulently anti-Muslim would become a rallying cry for jihadist recruiters.

“There is concern about the policy of Trump toward the Muslims because America is not just any state,” said Kareem al-Jibouri, a member of the provincial council in Diyala Province. “It is a powerful state, and we are concerned that any extreme policy toward Muslims will help extreme movements by polarizing thousands of the youths and turning them into time bombs by recruiting them.”

You'll find Haters wherever you go in the world . . . however, it appears ( in this revealing article ), cooler heads have prevailed, appreciating the " Truth Telling " Trump: and not be "so offended " ( as Liberals in the USA are ) at calling Radical Islam for what it is; just that - Radical Islam

Great Find LGD :twothumbs:

Thank you for bringing this article LDG........I'm not surprised especially when the media is still pushing back against Mr. Trump and telling the those who will listen that he is totally against ALL Muslims. He never said or alluded to that once. There are too many other examples I can add but won't. I am seeming to think that the one thing most liberals fear most is having to get back to working real 8 hours a day job without a government handout. Mr. Obama gave us the Cash for Clunkers stimulus program (an epic failure) and a Health Care Act that will bust the national (already band aided) piggy banks belly, back, legs and tail..... I have seen the effect of those radicals over here in Europe, yet we still have people in the streets of America with the 'Let them in, they won't bother us' mentality. America is waking up out of her long slumber but it may be too late..........

We had better reach out to the One God that helped build us up before it is too late.........

Since we kicked prayer and God out of the Government we have gone downhill.........Gangs, Drugs, Violence, Teenage Pregnancy, among other things has gone up.

How true.. But it's going to need more than a bandaid and four years to fix it ... But with faith and determination a better world can look forward to a brighter future ..

I couldn't agree more with you NoviceInvestor. I know that it will take more than four years and a bandaid and our country has spoken. People are tired of the lies and BS that has taken us down the wrong path and those with the loudest voices are the ones that try to shut people like us down. It's time not only to stand up and be counted but to speak up when challenged. Not with ignorance or aggression but with loving kindness and compassion that does not lead to the name calling and negative actions of our counterpart. I will show Love that comes from above.

I didn't support Donald Trump at first because of the name calling, however in the end I knew that he was the better choice, hands down. After the election I began  to found myself very angry about all the name calling. I thought about how tired I am of being told that I'm some kind of racist and stupid because I see the LSM and the left for what they are. And I began to find myself having little outburst about that anger.  Indeed, I began to show an almost aggressive attitude towards those that are calling names and destroying property.

But then last week our Lord revealed something to me that changed everything within me. My entire thought processes are now irrevocably transformed and I can not allow anything like anger and hatred to enter into my life. I can not allow anything to even begin to tempt me to knowingly sin. When we begin to understand who and what God truly is then sin will become a thing of the past that, simply put, just doesn't bring any pleasure at all. When we begin to understand that Salvation is just the beginning of faith and that walking on streets of gold is just a casual stroll compared to what God is going to clothe us with then sin is , well nothing at all.

I pray that God in all his goodness will bless you and your family during this season, and all the days of your life.

As I watched the news clip of Vice President-elect Mike Pence. I imagined that his discussion with his daughter and possibly her friends was........In my mind it sort of went something like this.

Mike: Did you enjoy the show?

Daughter: Yes Daddy but I didn't like the way they called you out at the very end if the show and said all those things to you

Mike: I didn't enjoy it either but you know.......that is what I so love about this country. The Freedom of Speech! It's a wonderful concept and unique to Our Country,

Daughter: Yes daddy but you have always taught me that there is a place and time for when and how to speak.

Mike: (with a playful grin) I taught you that did I? Yes, I suppose I did what else did I happen to teach you?

Daughter: Well daddy it will take me a lifetime to cover everything but some of the key points are.....Speech is just that. The burning of the flag is not speech, it's an action but if others want to see it as speech they have that right, Though it rarely if at all happens in other countries.

Mike: Yes, continue

Daughter: You also taught me to be respectful to others even though we may not agree with one another. Democrat, Republican, Socialist. or others...... and that a difference of opinions shouldn't tear a country apart.

Mike: So let me ask you another question if I may. What exactly is tearing your country apart?

Daughter: (hand under chin thinking to herself} Well daddy it's not being torn apart!

Mike: (Looking a bit puzzled but smiling on the inside because he know his daughter has home training and will give the right response.

Daughter: Daddy, it's sadly falling apart because we no longer have the Glue that was holding us together. I mean not just the country but family structure and values. I mean everything from the top to the bottom. God is that Glue which is missing.....His Values, His Love, His Patience, His Peace.....

Mike: (interrupting his daughter) Yes daughter we are missing that Glue and many don't want to be glued together they would rather stay torn apart and seek only their own agenda because they don't know, have not been taught or just flat out rejected that Glue which so wonderously held our country together. That is why I decided to run with Mr. Trump. We may not and don't agree on everything but.........we still can wok together for a common cause and every so often as much as I can, I will pull out that Glue Bottle, read the instructions and apply it where I can.

Daughter: (with a great big ol smile) thank you Daddy, I Love You, Mommy, our country and that great big Bottle of GLUE that you carry with you everywhere you go.

God Bless America

Go RV........Okay the God Bless America and Go RV are my words........Flam- out.......

I know there are many praying for and expecting an awakening.  There is an evangelist named Billye Brim who has had a Wed. noon (CST) oniine prayer meeting for years for revival.  Eagle Mtn. International Church in Ft. Worth is focused on revival, and the pastor said before the election that whoever wins is going to come face-to-face with the awakening.  The same church had a continual 48-hour prayer meeting before the election.  I know there are other believers doing the same.  God moves when His people pray.

Enjoyed this read very much. Yes, our Lord should be and must be first and foremost in all our lives. I would also like to add that if we had more Dads in this world like Mike Pence in this reading, we would have a much stronger, moral world. My personal belief is the breakdown of the family is the breakdown of our relationship with the Lord and the reason for the falling apart world.

I could get on a rant about some of the family structures that exist today but I will give you a break. 😀
