I did notice the arithmetic progression on the left side of the equation and the gap in the numbers between the 3rd ands 4th line. I was thinking inside the box. However, with the four added lines, there is additional support for the arithmetic answer that is equally as viable as the geometric answer! Thanks Synopsis! I would say, based on the puzzles presentation... there are no "hints" toward finding a formula, as well as using/inserting any multiplication, decimals, etc. I believe its intention was purely the use of addition. If the puzzle creator inferred the extrapolation, then 96 would be the answer via the pattern inferred (filling in the missing lines, as well as providing for an infinite continuation). However, if it was not inferred, then I would declare 40 as the answer, via its own unique four-line pattern... resulting as 8 + 11 = 19 (+21) = 40

So is there really a correct answer to a conundrum with two correct answers?
