ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani announced new reform and anti-corruption measures on Wednesday aiming to rescue the government from its critical financial crisis.

In a statement released on presidency website, Barzani stated that in the past three months 93 cases of corruption have been submitted to the Kurdistan Region’s Integrity Commission and the Public Prosecution and are under investigation. Some of the cases are at the court.

Barzani expressed his support for the joint reform plan by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the World Bank in May 30, stating that the new measures are part of the reform package announced in February 2016.

The KRG has made nearly 40 decisions within the context of reform process, transparency, reducing the expenditure and increasing the revenue, many of these decision are related to the oil sector.

Sibel Kulaksiz, a senior country economist with the World Bank (WB), attributed problems, such as increasing rates of poverty to the instability and decades-long problems of the region.

She emphasized challenging structural issues that have long existed in the government’s institutions.

She also agreed with comments from both Masoud and Nechirvan Barzani that the costly fight against the Islamic State (IS) and the unexpected deep downturn of oil prices have exacerbated an already foundering economy.

But, she said, one of the main burdens on Kurdistan’s economy is the influx of IDPs and refugees from other parts of Iraq and from Syria.

It has been recorded that the KRG allocated $1.4 billion in 2015 for them.
Barzani described the solutions proposed: “Taking loans from institutions are only temporary measures. We are working on short and long-term structural reforms to the government’s financial structure.”

Fundamentally, to enhance the government’s economy, KRG will work on fostering more sectors, like agriculture, tourism, and transportation, rather than solely relying on oil for income as it is the case now.

It will provide the private sector with more investment opportunities while minimizing the public sector’s role through gradual steps.

Noteworthy, reforms will extend to administrations and banking, which will include increasing the private sector’s reliance on the banking system and “bring[ing] our banks to international standards,” Barzani remarked.

Most importantly, the government will endeavor to tackle corruption to a possible extent.

Barzani is making sure they get some of these loans, even if it means throwing some of his corrupt cronies under the bus. Kurdistan has to look like their trying to curb the corruption up there an this is the way the Kings sacrifice the lambs to do it. 93 corrupt cases in 3 months LMAO they could find that many cases in a week...

Tide is rising. It appears time is running out and they are going to have to make the tough decisions. Lines are being drawn in the sand (pardon the pun) It is now down to either you're in or you're out. It is beginning to sound like the WB and IMF are at the end of their patience. Things are starting to move very quickly now and old alliances are about to fall. I am beginning to feel like this whole dream/concept/hope/wish RV might actually becoming a reality right before our eyes.

Very astute perceptions, BostonAngler..... I know that there are some here that have been in this investment longer than I have & we are all weary.....but, I have been feeling that someday soon we will all be rewarded for our tenacity, endurance and perseverance. Blessings to all!
