Donald Trump calls Pope Francis 'disgraceful' for questioning his faith

Trump responds after the pope suggests presidential candidate is ‘not a Christian’ because of his plan to build a border wall between the US and Mexico

Donald Trump has hit back at Pope Francis after the pontiff suggested the Republican presidential frontrunner was “not a Christian”.

At a press conference during a trip to Mexico, the pope said of Trump: “A person who thinks only about building walls ... and not of building bridges, is not Christian.”

Trump responded swiftly at a campaign event in South Carolina, telling a packed room at a golf course resort: “For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful.”

The Republican frontrunner continued: “No leader, especially a religious leader, has the right to question another man’s religion or faith.

“[The Mexican government is] using the pope as pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves especially when so many lives are involved and illegal immigration is rampant and bad for the United States.”

Earlier, Trump had said: “If and when the Vatican is attacked by Isis, which as everyone knows is Isis’s ultimate trophy, the pope can have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president because this would not have happened. Isis would have been eradicated unlike what is happening now with our all talk, no action politicians.”

Trump said he did not take the pope’s remarks personally, however. “The pope said negative things about me because the Mexican government convinced him Trump is not a good guy,” he said.

He added: “The Mexican government has made many disparaging to me about the pope because they want to continuing ripping us off.”

He also dismissed any potential backlash from his remarks, saying: “Now it’s probably going to be all over the world. Who the hell cares? I don’t care.”

The Republican frontrunner, whose campaign shot to prominence with his focus on illegal immigration and pledge to “build a wall and make Mexico pay for it” is currently heavily favored in Saturday’s Republican primary in South Carolina.

Trump has long sought to prove his religious bona fides to social conservative voters. The Republican frontrunner has often stated on the stump that the bible is his favorite book, with his own bestseller The Art of the Deal coming second.

“As much as I love The Art of the Deal, it’s not even close. We take the bible all the way,” Trump said in August.

The real estate mogul, who has repeatedly pledged, if elected, that “we’re gonna be saying Merry Christmas again”, has had experienced a number of awkward moments as he has tried to demonstrate his religious faith. In a speech at Liberty University in January, Trump’s attempt at a biblical reference fell flat when he introduced a passage from 2 Corinthians as “Two Corinthians” rather than “Second Corinthians”. Further, the real estate mogul tried to put money on a communion plate while attending church in Iowa in January.

In 2013, soon after Pope Francis I was first elected to the Papacy, Trump praised the pontiff, tweeting: “The new Pope is a humble man, very much like me, which probably explains why I like him so much!”

the pope said of Trump: “A person who thinks only about building walls ... and not of building bridges, is not Christian.”

The pope must have gotten his line from the Democrat Socialist talking points...Trump didn't "only think [speak] about building walls"...he also said he wanted to put in that wall, a "big beautiful door, to allow for LEGAL immigration."

Bridges...doors..."at this point, what difference does it make". I think the pope is a globalist and I'll leave it at that.

Coming from a man who's city in which he resides is surrounded by a wall. Hypocritical much?

Here's The Reason Walls Were Built Around The Vatican

Controversy continues to swirl around the apparent conflict between Pope Francis and Donald Trump, after the Pontiff implied that the billionaire's focus on building a wall on the Mexican border puts him at odds with the tenets of Christianity.

In Trump's defense, some have pointed to the fact that the Vatican City, the seat of papal authority, is itself surrounded by walls. However, this defense is being criticized by some on the left, who claim that the walls surrounding the Vatican are not analogous to those proposed to secure American borders.

In an article entitled "In Defense of Trump, Some Point (Wrongly) to Vatican Walls", write Liam Stack writes that Pope Leo IV built the walls around the Vatican "in an attempt to protect it from attacks by pirates and other marauders."

Indeed, the early walls that surrounded the Vatican became known as the Leonine wall in honor of the Pope responsible for their construction. Some of the Leonine wall still stands and makes up a portion of the structure that surrounds the Vatican to this day. But those walls were built with a far more specific enemy in mind than Stack lets on.

Leo built the walls in order to protect the city against the encroachment of "Saracens", an early term for the Arab Muslims who were hell bent on the conquest of Christian Europe. In 846, a year before the start of Pope Leo IV’s reign, the Saracens attacked the outskirts of Rome. The Muslim raiders targeted the Basilicas of St. Peter and St. Paul, which were located outside of the massive walls that defended Rome itself. The Saracens looted the two churches, robbing them of their relics and desecrating the tombs of two of Christendom’s most revered saints.

The 1910 Catholic Encyclopedia says that shortly after the raid, "[Pope Leo IV] began to take precautions against a repetition of the Saracen raid of 846. He put the walls of the city into a thorough state of repair, entirely rebuilding fifteen of the great towers. He was the first to enclose the hill by a wall." The walls that Pope Leo built, which were completed in 852, were nearly 40 feet high, twelve feet thick, and defended by dozens of towers that turned the site into a fortified city.

In response to Francis' criticism, Donald Trump, fittingly, noted that the Vatican remains a prime target for ISIS. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that the rampaging zealots of the Islamic State are the modern day successor of the conquest-minded Saracens of the 9th century.

Donald seems to have softened his tone with the Pope. At Thursday's CNN's townhall, Trump called Pope Francis "a wonderful guy"

One thing about it, is that Muslim's are persistent.

Oh Donald,"Duck", Trump our hero is gonna save us all with his foul

mouthed antics and the absolute most insecurity ever presented by one

so wealthy. What is wrong with everyone? How is it that most don't see him for the

crybaby he is? I mean really this idiot is considering running third party solely because

no one clapped when he came on stage at the debate    :facepalm2: And he wants everyone to

think he's a winner, more likely he's a whiner with more in common with Uncle Bernie and

Hillarious. And that's not even touching his self proclaimed fame of the, "ART OF THE DEAL".

A book that Mr. Duck says is as important as the Holy Bible.  Bout the only deals that he's

ever made was using the liberal tactics of government to do things like steal land from an

old lady so he could build a parking lot for his casino. What about his serious ties to the

Mafia? . Birds of a feather.

Ever wonder why the Duck claimed he could work with Putin? That's because he's been dealing

with the Russian Mafioso for decades. Look it up, some of Donald's closest business partners

have the most nefarious ties and associations.

Like I always  say, "YOU GET THE GOVERNMENT YOU DESERVE".

I hear ya LGD -

The "Duck" in not a "politician" and politician's have gotten US $20T  in the hole.

Since my little sister got a"pill to the head" by a gas hole that came here illegally, I am for Trump for that reason a wall and to ship law breakers back to where the once came from.

He is the only one to speak out against it.

The "Duck" is a seasoned veteran, skilled in business. The USA is one big business.

Trump is a Nationalist and not a Globalist. He is different.

If you Never use foul language then you can surely criticize him for having a foul mouth.

For me his business skills far out way a potty mouth.

Peace

Come on RV

What is wrong with everyone?

LGD... I'm not going to try to convince you of anything and as you've seen, the tone of your dire warnings do not sway us to your position. We simply and respectfully disagree with your assessment of Trump. However if you want to understand, I would ask you to dig deeper... distill our #1 objective down to its essence: The DEMONcrats must be stopped EXCLAMATION POINT! Not the big fat question mark that so far regrettably, all other republican candidates share. Please consider these wise words from brilliant men on my last 2 posts here...

LGD you crack me up when you call him "Duck"

I've already said I won't debate you on this.

But I will correct you on one thing - he didn't say his book "The Art of the Deal" was as important as the Bible. That's a misleading statement, and I know you are a better person than that.

:peace:

:twocents:

Ahhhh my dear friend, I beg of you to not cease with our discussion. You , sir, are a Ivory college

educated man that I've put a large amount of trust in. Something that I don't take lightly and something

that I backed up with my money. That for me Adam is putting your money where your mouth is.

And now I have a clear opportunity to show exactly why I value your debating skills and your knowledge.

My statement about Donald and his comparison of his book to the bible was from something that I

got from one source. And because you questioned it I have looked for other sources and it seems

sir that you're correct and I'm wrong, again.  :facepalm1:  I present the truth here

Now I still find the statement to be arrogant and far more bold with reference to spiritual

umbrage than seems necessary. Nevertheless, My initial understanding was not correct.

And that is why you should continue to debate, because in doing so with someone willing to

learn, grow and admit when their wrong your knowledge can change others understanding.   :tiphat:

And that is okay. If we were all to think exactly the same way this would be a very

boring world. I will continue to do research in an effort to further develop a more

reasonable opinion.
