Iraq to build wall and trench around Baghdad
Jim Michaels, USA TODAY 4:40 p.m. EST February 3, 2016

Iraq said Tuesday it is building a wall and trench around Baghdad in an effort to secure the city from terror attacks.

The Interior Ministry spokesman, Brig. Gen. Saad Maan, said work began this week on a 65-mile stretch of the wall and trench around the capital, the Associated Press reported. The wall will be 10-feet high and partially made up of concrete barriers, he said.

The Islamic State, also known as ISIL or ISIS, has seized large swaths of Iraq and neighboring Syria, but the terror group has not seized any territory in Baghdad. The group, however, has launched attacks inside the city using car or truck bombs.

The large defensive wall and trench will allow Iraqi authorities to dismantle many of the police checkpoints throughout the city, and free up security forces for use elsewhere in the battle against the Islamic State, the AP said.

Iraqi security forces backed by coalition airstrikes has made progress against the terror group throughout Iraq, coalition officials have said.

“The enemy now controls about 40% less territory than it did at its zenith,” said Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland, commander of the U.S.-led coalition.

interesting heres some history of babylon and their great walls.

The Ishtar Gate was constructed by the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II circa 575 BCE. It was the eighth gate of the city of Babylon (in present day Iraq) and was the main entrance into the city

Walls are useless in today's world.

You just have to look at the most protected area in the WORLD......Groom Lake, AKA, area 51.

This (MOA) Military Operating Area, don't use no stinking fences.

There are optical trip sensors buried on the soil, infared heat sensors AND sensors that detect ammonia....all human beings excrete ammonia with each breath of CO2 exhaled.

All these politicians who talk about building a wall here or there are FOS and ignorant.

The cost of putting the above devices into service is miniscule, compared to the cost and upkeep of a physical wall.

Nobody......i repeat, nobody can defeat detection of sophisticated electronic surveillance.

I spent 6 years in the military maintaining these type of devices.

The alliance said in a statement issued at the conclusion of the meeting of political body headed by Ahmed electrodes head of the parliamentary bloc of the Alliance, we "While we express our strong concern and our fear of the project of dubious purposes behind the implementation of the so-called wall of Baghdad security, we are preparing the start of the scheme seriously intended to truncate parts of Anbar province and annexing the provinces of Baghdad, or Babylon, as a prelude to re-draw the map of Iraq according to sectarian lines, racial and paving the way for the division of the country and turn it into a mini-states serve external agendas known. Iraq building security wall around Baghdad

Baghdad (AFP) - Iraq is building a three-metre-high security wall and trench defences around Baghdad in an effort to thwart jihadist attacks, a security official said on Thursday.

The aim is to prevent the infiltration of "terrorists" and car bombs into the city, Brigadier General Saad Maan said.

"We began constructing a three-metre-high (10 foot) concrete wall and a trench around the city of Baghdad," he told AFP.

Construction will take place in two phases, with areas north and west of Baghdad being addressed first, followed by other locations, though some will not require a wall or trench due to natural features, Maan said.

Territory held by the Islamic State jihadist group is located north and west of the capital, making those directions the priority.

After the completion of the first phase, which is expected to take six months, Maan said that 50 percent of checkpoints inside Baghdad will be removed.

The city is littered with checkpoints that often wave cars through or at most perform cursory searches, adding little to security while causing major traffic jams.

Baghdad is often hit by bombings and other attacks, but security in the capital has improved since IS launched a sweeping offensive in June 2014, likely because the jihadists have subsequently been occupied elsewhere.

Thank You for your service Mr. TC  I'm always looking for new info and you just laid some on me with the ammonia comment.  I've heard about all the other electronic devices at Groom Lake but never anything about ammonia.  They must be awful sensitive to pick up such a small amount.  I'm sure there are other sensors we haven't heard about.  Anything you can tell us about or is it still "secret"?  Would the same sensors work for a Southern border application or is there maybe too many people involved?  In other words, spill your guts my friend.  Without crossing the line of course.

IRAQ'S ABADI DISMISSES BAGHDAD WALL PLANS

Iraq, February 7, 2016 Show Video | Download Video

The Iraqi Prime Minister is dismissing plans to build a wall around the Iraqi capital, according to a statement released by his office Saturday night.

The plan for the wall was originally drafted by the Interior Ministry as an effort to prevent Islamic State group attacks inside Baghdad.

"Baghdad is the capital for all Iraqis and it's not possible for a wall or a fence to isolate the city," Haider al-Abadi said in the statement.

The Interior Ministry's spokesman, police Brig Gen Saad Maan, told The Associated Press last week that work had begun on the wall and that it would reduce the number of checkpoints inside the city.

Bombings and attacks are still a near daily occurrence in Baghdad, mainly targeting security forces and the country's Shiite majority.
