Pentagon: 2 U.S. Navy Boats With 10 American Sailors Held by Iran Military

by JIM MIKLASZEWSKI and COURTNEY KUBE

  •

Iranian military forces seized two U.S. Navy boats Tuesday and are detaining them on Iran's Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf, senior U.S. officials told NBC News.

The 10 American sailors were on a training mission around noon ET when one of the boats may have experienced mechanical failure and drifted into Iranian-claimed waters, officials said. Iran's coast guard took them into custody.

The officials said it's unclear whether the sailors — nine men and one woman — aboard the two small riverine vessels had strayed into Iranian territorial waters before they were captured.

NBC Special Report: U.S. Ships Held by Iranian Forces 2:12

"At this point, we're still monitoring the situation and it's not entirely clear what happened," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on MSNBC, adding that Iranian authorities confirmed that the sailors are safe.

Earnest said there remained no exact time frame for when the sailors would be let go, but didn't expect a long delay.

Following reports of the incident, Secretary of State John Kerry spoke with Iranian officials in Tehran by phone, attempting to secure the sailors' release.

One senior official told NBC News the Iranians understand it was a mistake and have agreed to release the Americans in international waters within hours.

The Persian Gulf has been a flash point in the Middle East, and the incident comes on the same day President Barack Obama is set to give his annual State of the Union address.

Senior U.S. military commanders also criticized Iran last month for its "highly provocative" actions when it fired unguided rockets near U.S. ships, including the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook told The Associated Press that the boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when U.S. officials lost contact with them. Farsi Island sits in the Persian Gulf in between Iran and Saudi Arabia, and is fortified by Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

"We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly," Cook said.

Retired Army Gen. Barry McCaffrey, an NBC News military analyst, said the seizure of American boats is "very bad news" and highlights how the Navy may have failed to have surveillance on its vessels.

"We simply can't allow ground, air or naval units to be seized by a foreign hostile power," McCaffrey said on MSNBC. "I hope they're back real quickly. This is an affront to our military presence in the Gulf and will unsettle our allies in the region."

GOP presidential candidate Jeb Bush was among the first to attack Obama for appearing weak in front of Iran, which has been at odds with the U.S. over a nuclear deal that was finally reached last year.

"No more bargaining. Obama's humiliatingly weak Iran policy is exposed again," Bush tweeted.

But Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said on MSNBC that the pending release of the sailors shows how diplomacy between U.S. and Iranian officials "is working."

"Hopefully this will be resolved, and it won't be an issue that we're talking about in a couple of hours," she said.

They never intended to keep them. They just wanted to show the world that they could take actions against the U.S. with impunity.

There will be no repercussions against Iran for anything that has transpired.

Obama’s deal with Iran will still go through unfettered even though there will more incidents.

CNN said the Iranian's will return the US Navy Sailors, including one woman, plus the two boats immediately. Immediately being as soon as daylight comes. Well if I got it correct, right now it should be around 1pm Iranian time. Do we have our people and equipment back yet? What is our wuss Commander in disbelief gonna do about it? Will he sacrifice his ego and do what is right and re-institute the sanctions and keep the $150 billion dollars?

I'd say those sailors should be discharged for not being able to read a GPS.

It was planned, scripted and a perfectly executed operation.

I know this because according to the U.C.M.J. {Uniform Code of Military Justice}

any American personnel giving any type of information to an enemy force would

be immediately brought up on charges of treason.  They would never had told Iran

that it was there fault, or that they were sorry.

No one should make the mistake of demonizing an entire group of people

just because their leadership can be idiots.

I know a lot of folks who have spent time in Iran and were treated excellent in

every way. It is the religious idiots in any country that cause so much harm,

and iran is no exception. They are under religious rule by a bunch of pompous

leaders and can do little about it just like many other countries, but it is wrong

for anyone to think their leadership represents the people because it doesn't

at all.

Most of the people desire freedom and wish their government would keep their noses

out of their business, just like many other countries.

Good point about pointing fingers...what comes to mind is this presstv video interview, perhaps along the same line of thought?

Israeli lobby behind US anti-Iran policies: Pundit

http://presstv.com/Detail/2016/01/08/444963/US-Iran-Israel-Lobby-JCPOA-OKeefe-Assouline/

Press TV has conducted an interview with former US marine Ken O'Keefe in London, and journalist and Philippe Assouline, a Middle East expert from Los Angeles, to discuss the approval of a bill by the US House of Representatives that would limit Washington’s ability to lift anti-Iran bans as agreed in last July’s nuclear agreement.

O’Keefe said the West needs the narrative against Iran’s nuclear program in order to advance the Israeli agenda in the Middle East, adding that the warmongering regime in Tel Aviv has been fueling tensions in the region.

The Israeli lobby is “part and parcel of the ruling class of America,” said the analyst, stressing that Washington’s policies do not reflect the nation’s interests and serve Israeli goals in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

He rejected as baseless the claims that Iran is after developing nuclear weapons and said there is no evidence that there is a military diversion in Tehran’s nuclear program.

The US officials “carry on the charade that Iran is trying to produce nuclear weapons, when in fact its Leadership at the top level has said very clearly that the production and the use of atomic weapons would not be in line with the good God-fearing religious spiritual values,” O’Keefe said.

He was referring to a fatwa by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, which forbids the development and use of nuclear arms.

O’Keefe said the history of Iran over the past centuries shows it has been “one of the most peaceful nations on the planet,” adding that American officials are being “ordered to scuttle” the nuclear agreement reached between Iran and the P5+1 group – Russia, China, France, Britain, the US and Germany – last July.

Assouline, for his part, believes although Israel, along with some of its regional allies, has opposed the agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program, they have failed to push their anti-Iran agenda forward.

BREAKING: Defense Secretary Slips Up, Reveals Obama Admin LED IRAN Straight to Our Sailors

It doesn’t matter if “the 3 a.m. phone call” comes in the middle of the day. Not only will the Obama administration not answer it, but they’ll aid our enemies instead.

First came the fact that President Barack Obama refused to address the arrest of 10 of our sailors by the Iranian military after their boats had mechanical trouble at sea. Then came news that the Obama administration had offered the Iranians an apology for the release of the sailors.

Now comes the disturbing revelation, apparently delivered by Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, that the Obama administration tipped off the Iranians that our soldiers were lost at sea and requested their aid.

The news came from Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, during an interview on TheBlaze’s Dana Loesch shortly after Iran’s arrest of the sailors had come to light.

“I understand that (Secretary of State) John Kerry has indicated, look, when he got word, he and Ash Carter called the Iranians to help take care of our Navy guys, because they had some mechanical problems,” Gohmert said.

I’ll give you a second to pick your jaw off the floor.

“When our Navy ships have problems, we don’t call Iran. We call the rest of the Navy. We can call the Air Force, the Army, the Marines, Coast Guard. We don’t call Iran,” Gohmert said.

He also took a swipe at Kerry’s closeness with Iranian officials, noting how the former Democrat presidential nominee had the son of Iran’s foreign minister as the best man at his daughter’s wedding.

“But I guess, you know, if you have relatives that have weddings that involve the people that are in charge in Iran, well, maybe you feel that comfortable,” Gohmert said. “But you know, Dana, there are secrets on every military ship we have … that has no business being in the hands of the Iranians.”

But, hey — the Obama administration has given the Iranians everything else via the Iran deal, why not give them Navy secrets, as well?

This shows just how derelict the Obama administration was in its duty. Not only did they apologize to the Iranians, they actively delivered our sailors into the clutches of their military.

This rot starts at the top — and if Barack Obama can apologize to Iran, he can also apologize to the American people.

Washington, United States (CNN) - The US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter, said that the entry of American sailors Iranian waters last week, was due to an error in the navigation system, which used it, to coincide with the announcement by the Iranian authorities earlier.

Carter said at a news conference on Thursday: "I think that this is what is clear to now, there occurred a kind of error in the marine navigation system," he said, adding: "There are many things that have not been clarified until now, but we are still talking with the persons concerned. "

Iran's Revolutionary Guards naval forces have detained ten Americans sailors, Bmrkpan entered and approached the "Persian" island of Iran during their way from Kuwait to Bahrain near the island.  (Follow the history of the island and some of the facts around it by clicking here)

Thanks Fly. What Ken states is absolutely true and accurate, but not what anyone wants to hear. O'Keefe is a real

patriot that has not been afraid to tell the truth. The collusion is real, and while people believed the supposed conflict

between Obama and Netanyahu, meanwhile we watched as areas such as Iran, Syria, Iraq, Libya etc. have been made

unstable quite purposely and for evident reasons. As long as we refuse to see it, and address it properly, it will likely continue

unabated. Again, we are talking about corrupt leadership that pulls the people behind them as they tell them stories about

who is to blame, while the truth is often in the opposite direction that few desire to even approach it often because of personal

bias.

Mass media is used to underscore the story and with most, it is immediately accepted as "truth" because it

agrees with the world view of those who listen to it, without realizing how their opinion has been shaped for them in many ways and how easy it is to do so.

Here is a quote from  Emile Zola (1840-1902) French novelist that is relevant:

"If you shut up truth and bury it under the ground, it will but grow, and gather to itself such explosive power that the day it bursts through it will blow up everything in its way."

Man that woman is peed off. I'd run like the dickens if someone looked at me like that.

As far as the nuclear PT boats and their supposed capture, everyone might wanna look

at the video of the unarmed Iranian fishing boat that scared two full crews of navy personnel

to simply throw up their hands and surrender.

This was more than likely the transfer of at least four nuclear weapons to the government of

Iran. Those boats are capable of carrying and firing two such weapons each. Also as far as

being broke down and stranded at sea , those boats would have immediately notified their

commanding officer who would have then called in air support from the air craft carrier group

that those boats were in the water to protect. No way that an Iranian fishing boat would have

gotten control of those boats, unless that was the intention all along.

If I were sitting in Saudi Arabia right about now I'd be getting really nervous.
