  • Perry leads strong GOP response: Trump ‘unfit to be commander in chief’

Donald Trump attacked the Arizona senator John McCain on Saturday, for being shot down while a navy pilot during the Vietnam war.

Trump, who has been in a war of words with the 2008 Republican nominee, jibed of McCain: “He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured? I like people who weren’t captured.”

His words prompted a strong response from Republican candidates for president in 2016 – more immediate and forceful, indeed, than such reactions to Trump’s recent comments on Mexico and immigration.

The former Texas governor Rick Perry said the remarks represented “a new low in American politics” and demanded that Trump “immediately withdraw from the race for president”.

McCain was held prisoner by North Vietnam for five and a half years, and repeatedly tortured. Trump received several student deferments from Vietnam while in college. After graduating, he received a medical deferment.

Trump’s remarks came in a question-and-answer session at the Family Leadership Summit, a gathering of social conservatives in Ames, Iowa, at which a number of Republican presidential candidates were scheduled to appear. Amid continuing controversy over his remarks about Mexico and immigration, Trump is running at the top of most polls of the 15-strong field.

His jibe at McCain came in the midst of back-and-forth remarks between the two, in which McCain claimed the attendees at a recent Trump event in Arizona were “crazies”.

Trump responded by calling the Arizona senator “a dummy” because McCain graduated last in his class from the Naval Academy.

In a press conference on Saturday, Trump refused to apologize and said he had nothing to apologize for. Instead, he insisted that he was criticizing McCain for “not doing enough for our veterans”.

He went on to refer to a recent high-profile prisoner of enemy forces, from the Afghanistan war, when he insisted: “If a person is captured, they are a hero as far I’m concerned. Unless they are [bowe] Bergdahl.”

Trump defended his words on stage by saying: “I am not supposed to respect the people who didn’t get captured?”

A number of Trump’s Republican opponents were quick to criticize his comments. Former Texas governor Rick Perry released a statement, which said: “Donald Trump should apologize immediately for attacking Senator McCain and all veterans who have protected and served our country.

“As a veteran and an American, I respect Senator McCain because he volunteered to serve his country. I cannot say the same of Mr Trump. His comments have reached a new low in American politics. His attack on veterans makes him unfit to be commander-in-chief of the US armed forces, and he should immediately withdraw from the race for president.”

Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum tweeted that McCain “is an American hero, period”; at an event on Saturday, Wisconsin governor Scott Walker said McCain was “an American hero” as well. Former Florida governor Jeb Bush condemned “slanderous attacks” against McCain, in a tweet.

South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham, a friend of McCain, has been a vociferous critic of Trump. On Twitter, he said: “If there was ever any doubt that Donald Trump should not be our commander in chief, this stupid statement should end all doubt.”

The most pointed response came from the Louisiana governor, Bobby Jindal, who tweeted: “After Donald Trump spends six years in a POW camp, he can weigh in on John McCain’s service.”

Even the Republican National Committee, which has been noticeably reticent to criticize Trump, went after the billionaire. Sean Spicer, the RNC’s top strategist, tweeted: “There is no place in our party or our country for comments that disparage those who have served honorably.”

Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican candidate, tweeted: “The difference between @SenJohnMcCain and @realDonaldTrump: Trump shot himself down. McCain and American veterans are true heroes.”

One Republican presidential candidate, though, went out of his way not to condemn Trump’s remarks. Speaking to reporters in Ames, Texas senator Ted Cruz said “John McCain is a friend of mine” and praised the Arizona Republican as a war hero.

However, Cruz said he refused to engage in “Republican on Republican violence” and “the bloodsport of politics”.

A McCain spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Reaction from audience members at the Family Leadership Summit was mixed. One attendee, Jim Welscher of Des Moines, had no problems with Trump’s comments. “The truth needs to be spoken,” he said.

In contrast, Dave Koenigsberg of Hampton, Iowa said: “It’s troubling that he would be derogatory to a United States senator, particularly about being a veteran.”

Trump did not just attack McCain. The former host of Celebrity Apprentice also took a populist note in going after the current system of campaign finance. The real-estate mogul defended his long history of political contributions to both parties as influence-buying: “I give to everybody and they do whatever I say,” he said.

He used this to note his independence from special interests and attacked the massive fundraising tallies achieved by Jeb Bush and Hillarious Clinton.

“Those people are controlled by whoever gave them their money, and I will tell you they are totally controlled,” he said.

The socially conservative gathering also meant Trump was pressed on his personal faith. While he talked at length about attending church and his love of family, he did say to a somewhat surprised crowd that he had never asked God for forgiveness.

It doesn’t seem likely he’ll ask John McCain for forgiveness either.

Yep..probably as low as you get. Saying that a man who endured daily beatings for 6 years...refused to be released before his fellow men...who was left permanently handicapped is NOT a war hero is about as low as you can get.

For once I agree with Perry...Trump is unfit to be CIC.

 New low???   :lmao:

Harshly worded disdain.

I think what will come out is the fact McCain is nothing but a NWO tool.

While John may have been at one time a very brave individual, he has since sold his soul for a couple pieces of silver.

His wife, born to parents in the CFR, inherited the Bud beer  distributorship when they died.

Since becoming a politician McCain has been nothing but a RINO.

His entire platform when running for POTUS was to be as identical to the obviously failed Bush as possible.

Everything that McCain does is collectivist.

He may make constitutional sounds, but that's only to deceive the morons that keep putting that POS in power.

I have said many times, John McCain is a dirtbag.

I respect his record as a pilot, but that is not the same person you see today.

Today, the only sacrifice coming from  John McCain , is that he is gleefully sacrificing YOUR rights, and YOUR country, in order to serve HIS puppet masters.

I think Trump may have said it better, but in truth, any conservative will tell you, John McCain is NOT republican, he is a RINO globalist, and he should have been put out to pasture a very long time ago.

Yeah, I think McCaine did sell his soul.

He is super rich and is probably and NWO tool.

JMO.

Not sure when, but McCain went from being an associate of the CFR to a full member.

The CFR is who created the UN.

The UN was created to be the enforcement division for the New World Order.

The BIS, and World Bank were created to control all trade and global currency.

H Bush, (that's Herbert, the VP for Reagan), lost his reelection bid when he started talking about the NWO.

So Clinton got in.

Here's a link to the current CFR membership

http://www.biblebelievers.org.au/cfrall1.htm

Please note, all the Clinton's are also members.

Follow the link at your own peril, the names you find may just keep you awake at night, realizing all the damage they are capable of doing, while serving their true masters, disguised  as representatives of the American People.

Their stated mission is to reduce the global population to around 500 million, in order to preserve earth resources.

It is well known, their position, is anyone not one of the elites, will be employed that serves their needs, and all others are a waste of resource, and are to be eliminated.

McCain wasn't rich until he married into money.

Trump inserted foot in mouth and that's it, McCain has paid his dues and he is forever a war hero. But where it stops is politics and if Trump is going to distinguish himself I think he has learned a lesson about what he can say. What I do like is that he is not a politician and full of it like the rest. If he can establish himself as a doer I might be incline to cast my vote his way.

I would agree to concluding Trump should have qualified that statement to address McCain's behavior since entering politics. There has been rumor and third party statements concerning McCain's allegiances during the incarceration, but that is another subject I wont go into other than to say McCain was the driving force in forcing a law to seal any and all information.(gathered intelligence, sworn statements by other POW's, etc).

I don't think I would want Trump to ever stop directly addressing every issue.

I have never been a POW, and can't possibly know what they went through.

I will always respect McCain's service, but you know as well as I, people change.

How many friends from High School turned into junkies, druggies, burglars, etc?

Of coarse we will hold onto the fond memories of naive antics, but also realize some of those friends have taken a path which requires us to completely sever all ties.

I very much respect your stance, but also I believe McCain has been given a pass for far too long just because of his military status, which he has used over and over as some sort of shield, demanding protection from criticism for anything he does, even when his actions directly harm or negatively impact every other veteran in America.

Any vet will tell you, the only time we ever actually stopped fighting among ourselves, is when we were directly fighting someone else.

Even then, there were a few who didn't even let that slow them down.

I have always been upset over McCain's actions.

It is time he is called out for what he has become.

Every vet will always respect the honorable portion of his service, unfortunately,  he has not served with any honor for a very long time.

If we take your statement to it's logical conclusion, all anyone has to do is a few years in and service, and then will be immune to any kind of punishment for anything they do.

So, any vet can go out and rob banks, drive drunk, commit any crime they want and never go to jail?

Of coarse not, then why has McCain been getting away with destroying America just because he once did something good?

Had Donald chose to attack McCain's political record alone, we would not be having this conversation.  Donald chose to belittle his war hero status and all other POW's with his lack of rational thought.....plain and simple.

Ahhh....yeah, I missed that.  Good one, Jax.  As for John Kerry, Donald "likes" him......he was never captured.   B)

LOL  I don't think so, Shabs!  I agree that what DM is saying, is that no one is beyond reproach, military record or not.  Enough is enough with the free passes.  It just shows, that many people think that way... like Trump... We really don't care to be cordial anymore, especially at this critical turning point in American history.  If you focus on the "manners"... you're missing the point!  Enough is enough!  Frankly, name calling and brash observations make an impact... make people think about the issue.  Trump can't be bothered with the diplomatic "courtesies" afforded to politicians, much less the "entitled" elite.  And, obviously, he and many others don't care about the fallout... it's all deflection.

When the life of the nation is on the line... it's almost juvenile to focus on "sticks and stone..." nursery rhyme.  I care more about the candidate carrying the big stick!  :banhammer:

I think you meant to say.....big mouth.    Look, I have no use for McCain the politician....but as a fellow vet, his service to our country is without reproach.  Donald misspoke and you know it.  He will say and do anything to one up his interviewer and stay relevant in the media world.  He's his own worst enemy.  An ego driven, master twister.

I'm not sure whats on Trumps mind and agenda with all the flamboyant talk on McCain and other large social issues. He's hitting lots of nerves and rightly so on some of them.

What I wonder is, is he genuinely exposing and saying all the things thats got folks on edge for the good of the party or country or is he trying to piss everyone off at the GOP and then at the last minute, bail out and jump on Hillariy's wagon?

Markb57, I rather have a heap of pissed of American citizens than the GOP, at least he's waking up the people regarding the dismantling of this great Nation. The GOP gave up on the American people a long time ago, that includes McCain, war hero or not!!!

McCain, you can call him what you want but for now he is a politician and he's just as much at fault with the mess America's in. He had his chance at being President, the people chose not to have him.  Even with the $1million dollars Trump donated to his campaign, he lost!!! He continues to lose the hope of the people because of his wishy washy stance.

People need to get over Trumps tone, or his hair or even how rich he is.  Is he being sincere at getting American back to being a Great Nation really should be the concern of the citizens.

I like it that he's lighting fire under the American people, a lot better than sitting back and whining about what is and is not politically correct. I wouldn't depend on the media for our source of information.  They're just has much to blame for the chaos we have in the world.  They keep the fear alive.  They purposely damage a persons reputation.  Hence, this is what is happening to Trump.

Markb57, it remains to be seen with all politician if they'll follow through with their promises.

Now we wait for the outcome, but prepare for the worst.
