umbertino
Researchers reviewing trials involving thousands of patients say taking extra vitamins and minerals does more harm than good Matthew Weaver Tuesday 21 April 2015 11.12 BST Dietary supplements, such as over-the-counter multivitamins, do “more harm than good” and can increase the risk of developing cancer and heart disease, according to research in the US. The study by the University of Colorado, which reviewed several trials involving thousands of patients over a decade, showed that those who took extra vitamins and minerals were more likely to have health problems. Taking more than the recommended dosage beta carotene – a supplement advertised as a boost to the immune system – was found to increase the risk of developing lung cancer and heart disease by up to 20%, according to the university. The review also noted that a trial involving a folic acid supplement, which is thought to reduce precancerous polyps in the colon, actually increased the number of polyps among users compared with those who received a placebo. Prof Tim Byers, associate director for cancer prevention at the university’s cancer centre, said: “We have discovered that taking extra vitamins and minerals do more harm than good. We found that the supplements were actually not beneficial for their health. In fact, some people actually got more cancer while on the vitamins.” He presented the findings to the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research at the weekend. The research raises serious questions about the efficacy of the dietary supplement market, which is worth almost £400m in Britain, according to research in 2012. Products sold frequently involve several times more than the recommended daily dosages of the vitamins and minerals involved. Byers said it was unclear why the supplements increased health risks, but he warned consumers against consuming more than the recommended dose. Taking the correct dosage was harmless but “no substitute for good, nutritional food”, he said. Those who ate fresh fruit and vegetables were less likely to get cancer. He explained that dietary supplements showed promising results when they were first tested on animals, but these had not replicated in longer-term studies on humans. “We are not sure why this is happening at the molecular level but evidence shows that people who take more dietary supplements than needed tend to have a higher risk of developing cancer,” he said. Research by the Food Standards Agency in 2008 estimated that one in three Britons took some form of dietary supplement and half of all households with children gave them vitamins or minerals. Byers said his study showed there were public health issues with such supplements and urged authorities to “pay more attention to safety and how they are advertised”. Multivitamins on sale. Jim1cor13
Thanks Umbert. Yes, some do take too many supplements, of a certain kind that can cause harm...but... The testing that is done is usually with synthetic vitamins, although they do not tell you. The vitamin E is typically dl-alpha tocopherol, NOT the pure d-alpha with proper mixed tocopherols, the folic acid is not folate, etc. These kind of tests are flawed from the start, and usually serve the interest of one of the largest industries today, the cancer industry. It is too big to fail, and many people across the globe are learning to use natural means to accomplish health and healing, NOT turning to the high priced chemical/radiation toxic mess that people still think is a 'cure'. Chemo and radiation has been only about 3 - 4 % effective...has the cancer industry admitted to this? Never, what oncologist is going to admit that, although the data is readily available but hidden within stats. Something such as flaxseed, fresh ground using a simple portable coffee grinder and the use of flaxseed oil mixed with sulphured proteins such as cottage cheese, quark or yogurt has been used to stop cancer in its tracks, within months, such as used by Dr. Johanna Budwig, who had a 90% cure rate, without killing a patients immune system and without poisoning them, and this info would not be known due to suppression, but it did get out after many years. Whole foods, organic as sarge's gals stated, and a healthy attitude go along way in curing most disease CAUSED by the very 'food' we are told is 'safe' for consumption. A constant state of fear and stress, which peoples TV keep them captivated in, will cause more illness than one can imagine, yet we still listen to the propaganda, and view big pharma as our saviors. What a bizarre world we now live in, where poison is treatment, where killing ones immune system is standard procedure, and where most everyone thinks this is "normal" to participate in. Obviously drug commercials and marketing have once again removed our ability to think critically for ourselves, and the daily lies apparently work. Very unfortunate, especially for those who are killed by these 'treatments' daily, and then the death is blamed upon the illness instead of the treatment...it is a no lose situation for the industry. What a shame. Edited April 21, 2015 by Jim1cor13
