Erbil, May 26 (AKnews) – In a new call Iraq has requested the United Nations to lift the sanctions imposed on Baghdad during the former Iraqi regime over weapons of mass destruction alleges, according to a source.

"We think that lifting the sanctions against Iraq will enable Iraq and Iraq ministries to rehabilitate all these facilities," Iraq's UN Ambassador Hamid al-Bayati told the Press TV on Tuesday.

Bayati said Iraq respected all UN resolutions and international agreements, but called for the lifting of the UN sanctions on Iraq, imposed on the country after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1991.

Iraq has no WMDs now and does not pose a threat to peace and security after international community failed to find any in the country, therefore the UN should lift the sanctions, according to Bayati.

"Recently Iraq's minister of foreign affairs has met with the general director of the IAEA, saying that Iraq is complying with the additional protocol …so nothing is left," Iraq's UN envoy emphasized.

Wouldn't this be nice, but I think Kuwait has to quit throwing temper tantrums first.

Yes ... Iraq seems to forget that they haven't fulfilled all their obligations and Kuwait will voice their opposition to lifting those sanctions. :D Every time i read about Iraq asking UN to lift sanctions I laugh ... if they are lifted before Iraq complies ... why in the world would they ever pay Kuwait or Jordon or settle the border issues.... Now the airplane fiasco. But ... this all does mean, to me, that we are just more big steps closer! I think that the more they plead with UN, the more UN will tell them to quit crying and comply and get it over with.

Iraq would have a much better standing with the UN on any issue if they got their parliament seated and working.
