So - since I'm one of the resident geeks - I have something that may help explain the ads - and for those free users - how to mitigate some of the ads. The ad generator being used is Taboola. The following is an article I found that may help. I'm quoting the meat and potatos portion of it. Oh - and just an interesting point - the ads are initially created by looking at the cookies left on your computer from looking at articles or other sites....

Taboola’s recommendations are meant to boost readership on different sites by referring readers to different articles that they might enjoy.

While Taboola’s algorithm is primed to offer stuff that it thinks you’ll click on, sometimes that means suggesting what you might think of as “lowest-common-denominator” type recommendations. Like Top 10 Slideshows Of Paris Hilton In A Bikini or Our Favorite Videos Of Celebrities Falling Down Stairs.

Taboola CEO Adam Singolda tells me that if you’re getting those types of recommendations, chances are it’s because you’ve clicked through on similar listicles or videos in the past. But in the case that you want to refine the suggestions it gives, the company is now giving readers the tools to do so.

With the launch of Taboola Choice, readers can now tell Taboola which content they don’t want to see recommended. It works like this: Whenever a user sees a Taboola recommendation, rather than click on it, they can mouseover and will see an “X” in the top right-hand corner. Click it, and the system will remove it and ask why you don’t want to see the content in question. Is it uninteresting, offensive, repetitive, or misleading? Choose one, and once you’ve given Taboola that feedback, it’ll take that choice into account the next time your cookie-base browser comes across the company’s recommendations widget.

So - if you don't want to see the 14 most embarrasing celebrity selfies - or want to see only Asian Brides and not the Russian Brides - or what ever - this is at least a place to start.

Only 2 ways to stop the ads - Become a VIP - or use Adblock Plus - available for Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari, Android and Internet Explorer. (I am not a paid spokesperson for the afore mentioned software.)

Okay I may get bashed for this, here it goes.  I do not see the ads when I'm logged on.  I continue to see the adds when logged off.

Sometimes there is no need to log onto the site to catch up with what is happening, or possibly time is limited at the moment to spend a lot of time logged on for some.  As for me I come and go, because of my time limitation.   Why all of a sudden taboola was allowed to the enter into the site?  I'm not computer lit, so my question may sound ignorant, but please be patient with me as I defend those who are struggling with the adds.  The adds can be offensive, uninteresting and what not,  the adds can interfere with a relationship that is struggling to survive. The adds can be a nuisance when it talks about celebrities. Who cares  about a celebrity.  The adds are waste of space.  We come to the site, logged on or not for information that is related to the site.

The DV site consist of investor, single male/female, families, Christians and non- Christians and so forth.

Adam, I commend you for creating this site and your well intentions of helping others with their investments. I'm not questioning your integrity in any way whatsoever... with this said, I can say these two lines says a lot about you.

Would it cross your mind that possibly these adds can affect your site, in bringing in new members or discourage members from visiting your site on a regular basis.   Your site is built on a good majority of moral conscience members, and also members who say "get over it" or "ignore them".

I am one not to take some of these adds like a grain of salt, and claim that it's normal, or tolerate it, if I do, then I am doing injustice to my heart and soul.

So Adam if there is any way possible you can work a miracle to eliminate these adds, some of your members would surely appreciate it.

I did install Adblock Plus and it didn't work for me.   :(

Just my simple honest opinion.

When I'm on Facebook, I frequently click on articles that have those Scantily Clad Women, if you have something like that, which keeps showing up, click on the Top Right of the photo and choose "Offensive" and they'll stop popping up. :twothumbs:

I may get bashed for this lol  ........ you dont see any of the add's because your VIP just like me  ..... anyone who is serious about this is or will be VIP (but I'm not sure VIP is still open so that gate has closed) ....... the rest are just freeloaders waiting for our posts about what is happening, I dont mind sharing but there is a limit ..... No.1 reason why I dont post my thoughts in open forums about what is happening.

come on people lets get serious about this.

There's been no complaints in a few hours, so I'm going to assume that everyone is cool with the ads now, OR you've decided to simply login if you are a VIP member, or in some form or fashion of your own choosing you simply decided to deal with it. (I understand that some of you will simply not visit the site anymore. We will miss you, especially if you posted a lot.)

If nobody has anything further to add, I'll close the thread and we can move on.

(I actually hope to get some more silly complaints. If any of my friends see a lack of silly complaints, please indulge me! Make something up if you have to!)

Seems that all sites or most is making attempts to load up with extra money coming in...This is Adam's site as he says and he has and this site has changed a lot from say three years ago. He only mentions that it cost hundreds to keep this site up but fails to mention the site ads bring in a ton of money  which is non of our business so I guess this is his way along with others to load up. He is a business man and he can run his site anyway he chooses so if we want to continue to be on here just like any other business we will have to absorb their practices. A good business man sooner or later will make money from every corner.....right or wrong money talks   JMO

If you are viewing as a guest the adds are there. When you are VIP and log in the adds go away. Some of the adds are funny

I'm a Member not a guest and I see them ( unless you call a "guest" also normal non-paying Members like myself) in every single thread in every section of Forum...

But I noticed that if you access site through a Proxy ( but in that case you can't login  and consequently can't participate in forum activities, posting etc.) then the ads disappear.

The other solution is to go to Firefox add-ons and download AdBlock plus.

I see them and I'm not logged in as a guest, just as the only "Junior Member" on the entire site.

You're young then ! Lucky you....Smile

Damn VIP membership... I'm kind of missing the ads now since my wife has gone to the store!

I thought exactly the same thing......Smile

I choose to refrain from further comment!   :tiphat:

Come on now... Spit it out....

All you have to do, is think of them as your MOM or Sister, and it'll cure that.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sir Adam.

I respectfully request that you stop the soft porn, barely covered ta ta pics/links, and the mail order bride ad's that come up in the middle of articles and or the upper ad bar on the initial window. They are offensive to me and others that frequent DV's.

I come here to get Intel on what is or is not happening in the IQD world. To enjoy the sense of community as we discuss events that allegedly get us closer to an RV or continued servitude to the company's we work for. To converse with adults, weather we agree or not, on what the latest thing means.

I do not like having to see some woman taking a suggestive selfie, or who's boobs float on bath water, or another's barely covered ta ta's . I am a man, but I strongly try my best to live as a Christian man. I got married in church so I can enjoy the benefits of the bed room and not feel dirty about it. I don't want to fight the image of God's work presented in such a manner as is becoming more frequent on this site.

I don't want to leave DV's . Yet, I am seriously considering it. I can just go to NINA- National Iraqi News Agency; IraqiNews.com; or other direct sources to get the latest happenings. I won't have the adult conversations, the back and forth that I enjoy at DV's but if you don't care, why should others? If things are so tight financially at DV's that you have to include such porn ad's I may just keep the VIP for the post RV benefits and go my own way.

I don't think you were hacked, so that eliminating these offensive ads are somehow beyond your control. If you were, your server Manager would just have to debug it and setup a filter program to prevent similar future hacks. If you were hacked and this cannot be fixed, I really don't want to be coming back to this site that often if only to attempt protection of my identity. Woo Hoo Anthem Insurance hack.

I would ask that you implement some way where similarly concerned DV fans can opt out by simply going to a DV link, inputting our DV name and boom, it's done. No more porn pics and ads for us. And no we won't have to re-input said instructions every time we log on, or every time we switch from one thread to another thread. If such a thing can be done, please keep it simple as possible for us "users" out there.

Signed; One of DV's biggest fan NYK.

I'm going to give you this information one more time - Adam advised you before that if you login when you come to DV, you will NOT see any ads. You can only post when you are logged in so when you logged in to make this rant - you no longer saw any ads. Just login NYK - you can't access any of the VIP forums if you are not logged in so why would you not log in. Also you can select the option to have your computer, phone, ipad whatever to keep you logged in on this site then when you come to read you are automatically logged in.

So, please, just log in and then you do not have to be offended by the ads! Simple solution.
