Durham, N.C. — A weekly call to prayer for Muslims will be heard at Duke University starting Friday, school officials said.

Members of the Duke Muslim Students Association will chant the call, known as adhan or azan, from the Duke Chapel bell tower each Friday at 1 p.m. The call to prayer will last about three minutes and be “moderately amplified,” officials said in a statement Tuesday.

“The adhan is the call to prayer that brings Muslims back to their purpose in life, which is to worship God, and serves as a reminder to serve our brothers and sisters in humanity,” said Imam Adeel Zeb, Muslim chaplain at Duke. “The collective Muslim community is truly grateful and excited about Duke’s intentionality toward religious and cultural diversity.”

In majority Muslim countries across the globe, the adhan is broadcast from mosques and on television and radio stations five times a day to correspond with prayer times. On Fridays, the day of worship in Islam, sermons are also broadcast.

In the United States, amplified adhan exists in a handful of communities.

“This opportunity represents a larger commitment to religious pluralism that is at the heart of Duke’s mission,” said Christy Lohr Sapp, the chapel’s associate dean for religious life. “It connects the university to national trends in religious accommodation.”

The announcement by Duke drew criticism from Franklin Graham, president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse. He took to social media on Wednesday to express his views and urge Duke donors to suspend support.

"Duke is promoting this in the name of religious pluralism. I call on the donors and alumni to withhold their support from Duke until this policy is reversed," he said on his Facebook page.

That's 3 minutes Muslims will be on their knees......what's the problem?

Incrementalism. That is the problem. I'll bet you 1m dinars that if they're allowed to do this, within a year they'll want to expand it.

True but, why can't a believer in the one true God YHWH get down on thier knees and pray in these schools and colleges?

Good questions, capt and Djorgie.  I believe it was atheists and weak school boards that caused the prayer problem in public schools.  As for colleges, I'm not sure students can't drop to their knees and pray.   :peace:

These are the same school boards that have banned almost all Christian symbols and meetings from their grounds. Do you see something very wrong here? We are on a dangerous road and we better wake up and sound our own alarm bell. Their taking over our schools the better to raise good little Muslims!

When did the meaning of "toleration" change to mean "acceptance"?  Or do we know the difference?

Is what's happening in our schools, universities, and society indicating a quickly accelerating practice of limiting the freedom of religion for Muslims and Islamic culture, and a decreasing in the freedom of Christians and Jews?

It will be if WE DECIDE that we want what they have in the Muslim world.  Personally, I DO NOT WANT anything to do with the Islamic culture or the Muslim religion.

The prayer of the Christian is not some rote words or chant used to call up some supposed god. When the Christians really pray things happen because God is real and not a figment of the human mind.  Jehovah God is real.

But when the Muslim prays, it is more of a call for militant action.  When things don't happen they take the matter into their own hands by killing the nonbeliever, terrorizing the community, and forcing compliance to "their way" of doing things.  The individuals who think that this will not happen is living in a dream world of idealistic "let's all get along" philosophy. Wise up!  Take a look at the reality of the Muslim world where Islam is the majority.

But Christians must start now at become real in their faith and LIVES.  We can't just say we are believers and live ungodly.  We must live a life befitting of the faith we proclaim otherwise we will be slapped in the face and dishonoring of God by our own character.  It is a disgrace to the supposed Christian and to God if we are bowing in prayer for all to see and the same day getting drunk or high on drugs and copulating  with everyone or anyone on campus.  It is a dishonor to God whom we say we believe and love!

Pray?  YES!!!  But live like you mean it!  Don't let the name of God be blasphemed because of YOU.

Where are all the atheists, and agnostics while this abomination is going on?  They are usually very eager to eliminate Christians, and Christian practices. Makes me wonder what they truly believe ,or care about. Is it a true disbelief in God,and Jesus,or is it the destruction of just Christians their true aim?

You really have to ask?
