A Mountain of Dirt

It's always been a great idea to keep your front lawn looking tidy and to repair any problems that comes about, we had a big truck load of topsoil delivered to fill in two holes left when two old tree stumps were removed. The big truck dumped the big mound of earth some 200 feet away from the holes because the lawn was to soft to go any further toward the holes.

So they sat there waiting for me to begin the process of moving and filling. What started out as a good idea in my mind soon soured when I realized that huge big mound wasn't going to move its self and the more I looked at it the more it overwhelmed me. I finally got the courage up to get all the necessary tools together for the task. As I stood beside it with my shovel in hand and standing beside the wheel barrow I looked at the mound of dirt and then I looked at the distance to the holes to be filled and it was discouraging. Why did I do this, I am the only one here to move the mass and complete the job. Boy, this just isn't what I thought it would be.

Simple Saturday afternoon chore, mini mountain, hole filling, lawn repair, sounded good when it first reared it head into my thoughts but the actual is here and it's dreaded. I stood there for about ten minutes starring at them both and wondering whether I should just hire someone to do this job, I just couldn't see myself a Bank Executive hauling dirt. This was for someone else to tackle, not me. Find someone, pay them minimum wage and let them sweat over the job. But then the thoughts of what people would think of him started to plague him. His neighbors, his Sunday school class, his workers and of course he also knew it wasn't right, he started this project and somehow he must finish it.

That's when guilt started to remind him that sometimes our decisions can have profound consequences. The old Chinese proverb came to his mind, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step". The translation of this proverb to the task at hand immediately became obvious....I needed to take one shovel at a time, one hole at a time and there is no boss and there is no time limit until the job is complete. I had to remind myself that what first appeared to be an overwhelming task can blow your mind until reality brings back the moment and thoughts of solutions on how to solve the matter. This applies to all things, the mind is geared to first blow in everything that can be negative before a little positive voice inside us can say, wait a minute if you will listen have something to say.

One step at a time, one day at a time, one solution at a time can bring something better than the negative. If you practice applying this principle it will become common place for you. The same principle applies to everything you need to tackle in life. It is easy to let overwhelming thoughts scare you and they will.... but let the positive thoughts bring what it has to offer also.

The Bank Executive wasn't used to manual labor, he was used to delegating tasks to be done for him......Lazy in his thoughts, perhaps, he thought the big trucks bringing the dirt would dump in the holes, fill them up then all he would have to do was a little tidy up. Trucks couldn't get close, he starred to long at it and allowed his mind to play dirty tricks on him.

Finally, one step, one shovel, one wheelbarrow at a time came about and he finished the job in one week and needless to say he had some satisfaction of solving a problem himself instead of passing the buck.

Human beings have been prepped to go at things alone inside their own thinking and this is what has gotten mankind in a mess now......How many of you out there can honestly say you give God first chance at solving or helping solve a problem. God also has this same capability to give us good solutions, He can shorten or take away the road to consequences and builds our faith in him at the same time if we will remember that he is there to help.

I will be the first to admit that I do not ask God first for help but I do believe in Him and His ways. Not much of a church goer but try to treat others like I would like to be treated. At times I fail at this and ask for forgiveness but try hard not to make a habit of it. I will be standing before him one day and can only hope that my good deeds will outweigh my bad ones. I am not one who thinks that you can go out everyday and do a bad deed then kneel down at night and pray for forgiveness. To me, that is not trying to be a better person.
