Al Jazeera America Documentary covering the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty, complete with interviews of survivors, and newly released recordings from the day of the attack.

 

This has been covered up for too many years and the ship survivors testimonies have been diminished and ignored ever since this happened. This documentary is one of the best ever made to expose the irrefutable evidence of the deliberate attack along with the following crimes committed against our very own military members who suffered the horrors of that day. It is incredulous that they have been treated so shabbily by our own government. Every American deserves know about this and demand justice finally be served for the sake of our military members, their families and our nation. This cannot be permitted to ever happen again and those behind it deserve prosecution for their crimes.

 

This video keeps getting removed from youtube (some people out there really do not want this to be seen) yet it has consistently and diligently been re-posted over and over again... if it should not show up with this link just do an easy search on youtube for a new link.

Israel apologized for the attack, saying that the USS Liberty had been attacked in error after being mistaken for an Egyptian ship.[6] Both the Israeli and U.S. governments conducted inquiries and issued reports that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the ship's identity,[2] though others, including survivors of the attack, have rejected these conclusions and maintain that the attack was deliberate.[7]

In May 1968, the Israeli government paid US$3,323,500 (US$22.5 million in 2014) as full payment to the families of the 34 men killed in the attack. In March 1969, Israel paid a further $3,566,457 in compensation to the men who had been wounded. On 18 December 1980, it agreed to pay $6 million as settlement for the final U.S. bill of $17,132,709 for material damage to the Liberty herself plus 13 years' interest.[8]

I am not attacking you maggie but my girlfriend is jewish and I have some muslim friends. I hate what my muslim friends say about israel but I understand where they are coming from with the Palestinians. However my belief is I will always be on the jewish side because Palestinians want Israel wiped off the history books. I don't want a return to the nazi regime and the world is already full of hate! Taking israel away will fuel that hate

I was first told about the attack on the USS Liberty in 1980 over dinner with a former analyst from the National Security Agency (NSA) in Washington DC.

 

Back in 1980, I promised my friend that if I ever got the chance I would make a film about it. Over the years, I pitched the idea to numerous broadcasters and always got the same response: eyes rolled upwards, usually followed by the statement, "Are you completely mad?"

 

Fast forward to 2009 and I was a guest speaker at the NSA's biennial conference on historical cryptography, talking about an unsolved code on an 18th century monument in an English stately home.

 

While there, I went to two other sessions - both about attacks on American signal intelligence naval vessels.

 

The first was the capture of the US spy ship, the Pueblo (boarded by North Korean forces in 1968 - and never returned). The survivors of that incident were treated like heroes and feted on stage.

 

The next day there was a session about the USS Liberty. James Scott, who has written easily the best book on the Liberty attack, was on stage and limited to his allotted 20 minutes. Ranged against him were three Israeli apologists, all of whom were allowed to overrun their time. Survivors from the Liberty affair were allowed to sit in the audience, but they were denied any say in proceedings.

 

As an Englishman, I was brought up with a strong sense of fair play and I thought this was a disgrace. It was gruesome to watch. First, the crew had been attacked in broad daylight by a close ally, then they were betrayed by their government and now they were being humiliated by the same agency many had worked for back in 1967.

 

Earlier this year, I acquired a copy of the audiotape of the attack as it had unfolded, the real time conversations between Isreali Air Force pilots and their controllers back at base. It had never been broadcast before. I went to talk to Al Jazeera and after careful consideration, the network commissioned the film.

 

On location, it all started with James Scott (who gets a co-producer credit on this project). When writing his book, he had already interviewed the survivors as well as many of the key people in the Washington political and intelligence machine from that time. The introductions he made would prove invaluable as we began filming interviews.

 

The veterans were extraordinary. One after another, they were generous with their time, uniformly eloquent and passionate and above all, honest in their recollections.

 

They all felt betrayed by the American government but were keen to exonerate ordinary Jewish people both in Israel and without, for any responsibility for the incident. Their beef was simply with the senior Israeli officers in the control room and their superiors higher up the command chain who had ordered the attack.

 

After a few days filming, I rang Elaine Morris, my producer back in London. She asked how things were going. All I could say was that the quality of the interviews was the best I had ever experienced in many decades in this business.

 

In Texas we interviewed Bobby Ray Inman, an intelligence officer with a glittering track record at the CIA, Naval Intelligence and as a former director of the NSA. My contacts in the UK intelligence world had always told me "he is one of the good guys" and I quickly discovered why. He was frank and clear. The top Israeli commanders, he explained, had known exactly what they were doing when they attacked the Liberty and when it came to holding them to account, the US government rolled over for them.

 

We filmed an annual memorial ceremony in Washington, D.C. It was emotional, visceral and tense, with survivors, family and friends gathered in the morning sun. Listening to a sole bugler playing the US Navy's lament, 'Taps' is a memory that will never fade.

 

Years earlier, I had visited the US military graves in Arlington Cemetery but now, following the ceremony, I got to go there again with Dave Lucas, one of the survivors of the attack and a truly wonderful man.

 

We filmed as he walked up the hill carrying a wreath from the ceremony. Alongside him was a crew member, a Portuguese language specialist, who had left the Liberty in Spain just a few days before it sailed off up the Mediterranean to take up position off the Egyptian coast. He had been temporarily replaced for the mission by an Arab linguist. He wept openly for the comrades he had said goodbye to, never to see again. As we filmed the pair laying the flowers, an interview with one of the other survivors, Jim Kavanagh came suddenly to mind. "I went through hell," he had said about his shipmates. "But they left this earth."

 

Finally, we filmed on a sister ship to the Liberty, now moored in San Francisco. The crew hauled an outsized US flag up a mast for us. The flag - known as the "holiday colours" - was identical to that which was flown from the Liberty on June 8, 1967. It was huge, clearly visible for miles, and I knew immediately that no one could ever have been in any doubt about the nationality of the ship beneath it.

 

Watching the Stars and Stripes unfurl into the wind, I realized that I had got to keep the promise I first made to my friend in a Washington restaurant 34 years ago.

 He is a very accomplished writer that uses the individual memories of others who were involved in happenings which he himself did not take part in, and uses (quit subtly) such reminiscences to produce a marketable book/film which incorporates his version/opinion.

 Again a marketable media product can contain as much or as little of the true account that is best suited to the authors slant on the subject.

 Peruse the script that is published above and deduce from it what you will, an absolute factual account, or are we lead by the author into the disquieting realms of doubt, where is the balance, the statements made by Governments of both Countries, the monetary restitution paid, the raising of the "Englishman's fair play" (tell that to a Scott), does this give any more credence to the story, all that this piece is about is the intrigue, the grab the imagination and they will pay to read/see more and thereby make money for the author and his Independent film co.

 We all know about opinions and everyone having one, and no doubt many would (or could) form an opinion based upon using such written/visual material produced by such as Richard, the innuendo leads to "conspiracy" theorists trying to quote parts of such productions as "fact", usually aimed at the government, which in this case seems to be inappropriate as is stated, any ill feeling towards Jewish people was expressed to be at senior level.

  I cannot speak for anyone else so this is just my opinion, had you of researched this subject and then written, in your own words, a passionate informative piece, summarized with your own opinion, then perhaps I and many others would applaud, rather than bringing forward a piece produced in conjunction with Al Jazeera (not his first) which in my humble opinion produces some (not all) anti Western/American garbage.

Thank You for an honest response Mcjocky... Here you go... my own opinion in my own words.

 

As a matter of fact I have researched this... Don't know if you watched the video... but if you did I'd be interested to know what you thought was "opinion" or "conspiracy theory". From the research I have done it was very credible and well presented. If you didn't watch it... It's beyond me how you think you can have any judgements about it one way or the other.

 

1) It presented the facts from the testimony of the survivors (I believe them) and other documented proof. As it happened, the government did not succeed in keeping the truth covered up because there were eye-witnesses who would not be silenced... They were the survivors of the Liberty’s crew.

 

2) The video showed newly released tapes of the Israeli's radio transmissions confirming they knew it was an American ship.

 

3) The Israeli's were definitely trying to sink that ship... 4 torpedo's and armor penetrating shells. If the attack had gone completely according to the plan of the man who ordered it, Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Dayan, none of them would have survived.

 

4) They shot at the life rafts to prevent escape... It did look like the ship was going to sink.

 

5) Israel jammed all the frequencies...they were the only ones who knew what frequency to cut preventing calls for help. Terry Halbardier was the hero who got off the SOS that saved the USS Liberty from Israeli destruction... Without him they could not have called for help and Israel would NOT have stopped the attack. Israel heard the calls and contacted DC right after to report their "accident"...otherwise they would have continued to try to sink her and all aboard..

 

6) They NEVER admitted that it was intentional... NEVER. Israel insisted (as it still does) that its attack on the Liberty was an unfortunate “accident”, a case of “mistaken identity”. The attack ought to have been a sensational, headline-grabbing news story, but beyond the fact that an accident had happened and that Israel had apologized... the truth has never been officially reported in any US media.

 

7) Our own government DID cover it up. FACT... TRUTH... PROVEN

 

8) Johnson started to tell the truth...he gave a statement right away to Newsweek and was then pressured to cover it up... McCain's father was the head of the navy and he was part of the cover up too. It is well documented who decided to do that at that... The ones who are still alive should be held accountable.

 

9) The survivors are still alive... They would like the truth acknowledged and their dead comrades honored.

 

10) The doc was made by an Englishman... He could not get it produced by any American news media outlet. This was not an anti-American propaganda piece as you implied... He did a fine job of presenting the facts... Irrefutable Facts.

 

Yes.. I am pretty passionate about this ever since I learned about it. I have researched it quite a bit for quite some time now. If you would like I can bring in a lot of links for you. I imagine if you are interested though... you could find plenty of credible ones for yourself. I found the video to be very unbiased and very factual. These men were given their medals in secret and were told to never say how they got them. They received no other compensation that I know of. The widows received a quick settlement of $25,000, the children who lost their fathers $10,000 each. Some lawyer in DC came up with that formula along with deciding that the children under 5 would receive $0... because they were too young to remember and would not have been "traumatized" by it. Israel accepted and paid that. They paid $6,000 dollars for the ship and soon after that it was scrapped.

 

What makes me the most incredulous is what our own government did... the cover up and the disrespect shown to the survivors...

 

Let alone towards the men who lost their lives that day... and the disregard towards their devastated families.

 

It also bothers me immensely that many here say they honor our Veterans so much... yet seem to have total apathy about this.

 

Do people choose covering for Israels government at the expense of our own Veterans??? I will never understand that!

 

It is not too late for our government to tell the truth and vindicate some of these men who are still alive,,, they deserve an apology and the solace of the truth finally being told... so do all the families of the deceased.

 

Before anyone starts in with the anti-semitic stuff... this video, nor the Veterans, nor I blame the Jewish people for what happened. They were not in that control room or in charge in any way... so stop it.... forget that argument.

                         USS LIBERTY MEMORIAL

 

On June 8, 1967, US Navy intelligence ship USS Liberty was suddenly and brutally attacked on the high seas in international waters by the air and naval forces of Israel. The Israeli forces attacked with full knowledge that this was an American ship and lied about it. Survivors have been forbidden for 40 years to tell their story under oath to the American public. The USS Liberty Memorial web site tells their story and is dedicated to the memory of the 34 brave men who died.

 

The Attack

 

After surveilling USS Liberty for more than nine hours with almost hourly aircraft overflights and radar tracking, the air and naval forces of Israel attacked our ship in international waters without warning. USS Liberty was identified as a US naval ship by Israeli reconnaissance aircraft nine hours before the attack and continuously tracked by Israeli radar and aircraft thereafter. Sailing in international waters at less than five knots, with no offensive armament, our ship was not a military threat to anyone.

The Israeli forces attacked without warning and without attempting to contact us. Thirty four Americans were killed in the attack and another 174 were wounded.   The ship, a $40-million dollar state-of-the-art signals intelligence platform, was later declared unsalvageable and sold for scrap.


 

The Cover Up

 

Despite a near-universal consensus that the Israeli attack was made with full knowledge that USS Liberty was a US Navy ship, the Johnson administration began an immediate cover-up of this fact. Though administration officers continued individually to characterize the attack as deliberate, the Johnson administration never sought the prosecution of the guilty parties or otherwise attempted to seek justice for the victims. They concealed and altered evidence in their effort to downplay the attack. Though they never formally accepted the Israeli explanation that it was an accident, they never pressed for a full investigation either. They simply allowed those responsible literally to get away with murder.

In an ongoing effort to reveal the truth about the attack, the USS Liberty Veterans Association has filed with the Secretary of the Army in the manner prescribed by law a detailed, fully documented Report of War Crimes describing the circumstances of the attack on our ship and evidence that it was a crime under international law. In accordance with international law and treaties, the United States is obligated to investigate the allegations. The Betrayal of American Veterans

Americans who volunteer for military service effectively write a blank check, payable to the United States of America for an amount "up to and including my life." The United States, in turn, promises to spend these checks responsibly. That bargain implicitly includes a promise by the United States to protect them and to seek retribution against anyone who harms them. In the case of USS Liberty, the United States has failed to keep its end of the bargain.

This video keeps getting removed from youtube (some people out there really do not want this to be seen) yet it has consistently and diligently been re-posted over and over again... if it should not show up with this link just do an easy search on youtube for a new link.

Maybe I missed it.....what was the reason given or motive, for Israel wanting (on purpose) an American ship destroyed?

 

That can only be speculated on at this point.

 

Some say it was to hide the fact that Israel was the provocateur against Syria and Jordan and the US had told Israel not to do that without talking to them first... That Israel did not want the USS Liberty to report what they were doing.

 

Others say it was a "false flag" operation... had they succeeded they would have blamed it on Egypt and pulled us into the war. The only way we will ever know is for there to be an open and HONEST investigation.
