REPORT: US-Led Airstrikes Just Targeted A High-Level ISIS Convoy

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S.-led air strikes have targeted a gathering of Islamic State leaders in Iraq in a town near the Syrian border, possibly including the group's top commander Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Al-Hadath television channel said on Saturday.

Iraqi security officials were not immediately available for comment on the report from the station, part of

isis-iraq-fighters-8.png

Saudi-owned al-Arabiya television, but two witnesses told Reuters an air strike targeted a house where senior Islamic State officers were meeting, near the western Iraqi border town of al-Qaim.

They said Islamic State fighters had evacuated a hospital so that their wounded could be treated. Residents said there were unconfirmed reports that Islamic State's local leader in the western Iraqi province of Anbar and his deputy were killed.

U.S. officials would not confirm or deny if Baghdadi, the group's overall leader, had been targeted.

One U.S. official said that air strikes were carried out against a convoy near the northern city of Mosul and against small Islamic State units elsewhere, but the U.S.-led air strikes had not targeted an Islamic State gathering.

Al-Hadath said dozens of people were killed and wounded in the strike, which it said took place in al-Qaim, and that Baghdadi's fate was unclear.

Al-Qaim and its neighboring Syrian counterpart Albukamal are on a strategic supply route.

The report came hours after car bombs killed 20 people, including five soldiers, in the Iraqi capital and the city of Ramadi to the west on Saturday, police and medical sources said, in attacks that resembled operations carried out by Islamic State militants.

Two bombs exploded in separate attacks in Baghdad's mainly Shi'ite Amil district, said a police source. "A driver parked his car and went to a cigarette stall, then he disappeared. Then his car blew up, killing passers-by," said the police source, describing one of the two attacks in Amil.

Maps locations in Syria and Iraq where the U.S.-led coalition has conducted air strikes against Islamic State targets, includes chart of air strikes by day.

In the mostly Shi'ite al-Amin area of Baghdad, another car bomb killed eight people, medical sources said. The attack by a suicide bomber on a checkpoint in Ramadi in western Anbarprovince killed five soldiers. “Before the explosion, the checkpoint was targeted with several mortar rounds. Then the suicide humvee bomber attacked it," said a police official. "Some troops came to the scene. They were attacked by mortars. A confrontation took place for one hour." There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombings.

The ultra-hardline Sunni Islamic State's drive to create a caliphate in Iraq has helped return sectarian violence to the dark days of 2006-2007, the peak of a civil war.

In the town of Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) northeast of Baghdad, a gunman killed a Shi'itemilitiaman, and a car bomb targeting a police officer killed his 10-year-old son, security sources said. Western and Iraqi officials say U.S.-led air strikes are not enough to defeat the al Qaeda offshoot, which holds parts of Iraq and Syria and is fighting to expand what it calls a caliphate.

Iraq must improve the performance of its army and security forces in order to eliminate the threat from the group, which wants to redraw the map of the Middle East, the officials say.

President Barack Obama has approved sending up to 1,500 more troops to Iraq, roughly doubling the number of U.S. forces on the ground, to advise and retrain Iraqis in their battle against Islamic State.

The Iraqi prime minister's media office said the additional U.S. trainers were welcome but the move came late, state television reported.

The United States spent $25 billion on the Iraqi military during the U.S. occupation that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003, and triggered an insurgency that included al Qaeda.

Washington wants Iraq's Shi'ite-led government to revive an alliance with Sunni tribesmen inAnbar province which helped U.S. Marines defeat al Qaeda.

Such an alliance would face a more formidable enemy in Islamic State, which has more firepower and funding.

Police Colonel Shaaban Barazan al-Ubaidi, commander of a rapid reaction force in Anbar, said security forces retook eight villages. His account could not be immediately confirmed.

Oh heck, you mean they treat their wounded?  I thought they'd just murder them as they are a thorn in the side to the evil pigs.  I hope each one gets a special 7 fold judgement for every human being they murdered.  Every loser american that went there to murder alongside of the satinist, should get twice as bad, and should never be allowed to set foot in another free country, especially the USA.

A key aide to the leader of Islamic State (Isis) was killed in a US strike on a convoy near the Iraqi city of Mosul on Friday that destroyed 10 vehicles carrying a number of the group’s top militants.

Abdul Rahman al-Athaee, also known as Abu Saja, is known to have died in the attack. A key aide to the Isis leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, he travelled frequently with the group’s top leadership but US and Iraqi officials were unable to confirm if Baghdadi himself was among the 50 casualties or even present.

Colonel Patrick Ryder, a spokesman at US Central Command, said on Saturday: “I can confirm that coalition aircraft did conduct a series of air strikes yesterday evening [Friday] in Iraq against what was assessed to be a gathering of Isil [isis] leaders near Mosul. We cannot confirm if Isil leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was among those present.”

Isis did not immediately issue any statement on the strikes.

The news came as Britain’s chief of the defence staff warned on Sunday that the leadership of Islamic State would regenerate itself even if Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had been killed.

In a sign that Britain believed there was a strong chance al-Baghdadi was killed in the air strikes, General Sir Nick Houghton spoke of his “potential death” as he said it would take some days for the US to confirm his fate.

Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show on BBC1, Houghton said: “I can’t absolutely confirm that al-Baghdadi has died. Even the Americans themselves are not yet in a position to do that. Probably it will take some days to have absolute confirmation.”

But Houghton warned that Isis would fight back if its leader had been killed. He added: “What I wouldn’t want to do is rush to the sense that the potential death of one of their totemic leaders is going to create some strategic reverse within Isis. They will regenerate leadership … because of the current potential attractiveness of this warped ideology. Unless we get the political dimension of the strategy in place then Isis has the potential to keep regenerating and certainly regenerating its leaders.

“In Iraq what is needed is government of national unity, inclusive government, so that all the ethnic dimensions of Iraq are combined. This is where the [Nouri] al-Maliki government got it horribly wrong. It is why getting rid of that al-Maliki government and now the [Haider] al-Abadi government which, in its early days is promising to be inclusive, [is important].” Baghdadi, who was said to keep a low profile even among his own armed supporters, made a rare public appearance at a mosque in Mosul in July in which he declared himself the leader of the new caliphate.

A US-led coalition has been launching air strikes on Isis militants and facilities in Iraq and Syria for months as part of an effort to give Iraqi forces the time and space to mount a more effective offensive.

The Pentagon announced on Friday that 1,500 additional US troops will boost the 1,600 military advisers that are already in Iraq to assist the country’s army.

Barack Obama also plans to request $5.6bn (£3.5bn) from Congress, including $1.6bn to be used to train and arm Iraqi forces.

With reports of dangerous injury suffered by Daash leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, head of the snake cut does mean the victory of the Allies?Talking about reports that the leader of Daash was among extremists who targeted one of the elected air strikes carried out by the international coalition led by the United States on Friday evening. But what the impact of this strike in the fight Daash?
with the leadership of al-Baghdadi is one of the cornerstones of the organizational structure of Daash, this structure is now able to maintain the same self after the elimination of the supreme leader.
How important is the leadership of al-Baghdadi?
This question raises two issues different; how important is any central command to Daash, and how important it is for personal Baghdadi organization?
structural retina of many groups counter makes it very flexible. , With the increasing density of the network increases the impact of the blow-elected - any strike aimed at killing or capturing leaders of the insurgency. In addition, the Daash differ from other networks in the counter claim to establish a caliphate ruled by al-Baghdadi.
So despite the fact that the impact of any strike in the elected leadership disable Daash series is debatable, the value of the symbolic and psychological indisputable. Moreover, this strike is not likely to be counterproductive as long as those who will be affected by the death or injury of an alleged al-Khalifa are Almustvon with Daash and supporters to him.
Al-Baghdadi has proven his skill as he changed the al-Qaeda branch in Iraq to an entity-like state, and was responsible Throughout the process of rebellion for the organization, and without him was to organize Daash re-establish himself. We learn how the organization under his leadership quickly and effectively adapt to meet the new threats it faces. The leadership of great importance for Daash, but they were not that important before the founding of 'Caliphate'.
Who will replace him?
There are a lot of Salafi leaders can take the reins Daash, but nevertheless Is the organization to appoint a new leader? Maybe the organization will depend on the temporary leader even reach a consensus on who will be the next caliph. Among the prominent candidates Syrian Abu Mohammed Aladnana who distinguished himself as a local leader handyman can manage global advertising campaigns effectively, then there is someone else is Abu Muslim Turkmen military commander skilled, but he lacks the gravity and capacity found in the eyes of the militants themselves.
The same can be said Abu Ayman said about Iraq, Abu Ali, who served Anbari - Like Turkmen - in the former Iraqi army. And describes the security analyst Hisham al-Hashemi deputies Baghdadi as 'shepherd dogs' in the sense that they are the most prominent people who helped to stay in power.
Can the coalition now ensure victory outright?
With these data, it seems clear that the elimination of al-Baghdadi, probably represents a great loss for the organization Daash, but it does not represents the coup de grace. The role of air power in the strikes could be useful in counterinsurgency operations, but it is unlikely that ensures victory alone without being accompanied by other tactics in a coherent strategic plan.
At present, the international coalition led by the United States reluctant to commit to deploy ground forces to fight Daash. Therefore, and despite the fact that the attack on al-Baghdadi, represents a valuable opportunity to weaken and destroy Daash, this opportunity could dissipate quickly if the coalition did not enhance Strutijeth in the coming days.
Also, it is very important to the meaning of 'victory' understanding in this circumstance specifically; as long as there are people willing to fight back Daash black banner, the war will not end with this organization. Coalition led by the United States has to prepare the material and ingredients to fight this enemy, but he needs to strengthen his desire to fight.
Daash: support or loyalty?
On the other hand, reported the Daily Star newspaper, under the title 'Daash gaining support, not loyalty', experts say that the Daash, despite gained rapid support from the apostates around the world, the marginal organizations and people isolated they are just expressing their loyalty to this armed group.
It is among the branches of the five al-Qaeda - in Afghanistan, Syria and Somalia and the Sahel, Yemen - not a recognized authority Daash leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who announced at the end of June the establishment of caliphate stretching from Syria to Iraq, and declared himself 'the leader of the Muslims in all parts of the earth.'
says Dominique Thomas, an expert with regard to Islamist groups in the School of Advanced Studies of Social Sciences in Paris, 'currently stands those who Athacdon behind Daash on Margin and not in the center of counter movement. They are small groups or marginalized people are looking for excellence, they profess allegiance to prove their presence. "
He cites Thomas, for example, the Declaration of Group 'Soldiers of the Caliphate' Algerian allegiance to Daash in September, which has received press headlines salient through kidnapping and spare Frenchman Herve Gordel traveler's head. And say 'this group was over a long time in the conflict with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb leader Abdulmalik Drukdal. There are also personal entities play a role in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Libya, but they are not currently considered important organizations in itself '.
Some of al-Qaeda groups heavyweight announced its support for Daash 'because it is not possible not to support when faced with a common enemy is the United States, but that support is something and loyalty to something else 'by Thomas.
But with the occupation of Daash press headlines amid battle Kobanî Syrian city that are subject to Allied bombing, the leaders of the rebel groups prominent witness sucked their supporters to a relatively new force. Romaine Kellett researcher in Islamist groups in Beirut says' everywhere armed groups leaders exposed to pressure from their supporters in order to get closer to Daash, but they oppose it now. As is no doubt that there is a split between the generations; leaders of al-Qaeda seem in the eyes of the new generations, old pardoned them time. '
aims to organize Daash youth through his propaganda network, has benefited greatly from social networks like Twitter and Facebook to turn young people into extremists.
says Jean-Pierre Filho specializes in radical Islam in Po Institute for Scientific Research in Paris' organization Daash take off al-Qaeda as a reference graduate of global jihad, and that all the main armed groups announced their support for Daash in the face of the bombing campaign carried out by the United States, but they do not declare their allegiance to Baghdadi Because of this integration process requires the globalization of confrontation. '
adds Thomas' whenever the western bombardment increased to Daash increased resistance extremist group and increased the attraction of the alleged gunmen. The Western military action against Daash helped to unite Islamist groups, and al Qaeda in particular has increased its call to unite in order to avoid strife within Islam.
