Ronald Reagan. US Army. Was a 2nd Lt. in the Cavalry Reserves before the war. His poor eyesight kept him from being sent overseas with his unit when war came so he transferred to the Army Air Corps Public Relations Unit where he served for the duration.

 

John Wayne. Declared "4F medically unfit" due to pre-existing injuries, he nonetheless attempted to volunteer three times (Army, Navy and Film Corps.) so he gets honorable mention.

 

And of course we have Audie Murphy , America 's most-decorated soldier, who became a Hollywood star as a result of his US Army service that included his being awarded the Medal of Honor.

I'd like to throw an "Honorable Mention" into the mix -

 

James Doohan -  Royal Canadian Artillery

 

He was commissioned a lieutenant in the 13th Field Artillery Regiment of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. He was sent to England in 1940 for training. His first combat was the invasion of Normandy at Juno Beach on D-Day. Shooting two snipers, Doohan led his men to higher ground through a field of anti-tank mines, where they took defensive positions for the night. Crossing between command posts at 11:30 that night, Doohan was hit by six rounds fired from a Bren gun by a nervous Canadian sentry: four in his leg, one in the chest, and one through his right middle finger. The bullet to his chest was stopped by a silver cigarette case given to him by his brother. His right middle finger had to be amputated, something he would conceal during his career as an actor.n (Ever notice that Scotty was always doing something with his right hand?)

That was a great generation who knew the meaning of service to their country. Rich or poor they served!

 

The generation we have now does not have a clue!

The rich started sending their children to college overseas to avoid the draft in the 60's & 70's and many of those are our current leaders in Washington.

The rich now avoid paying their fair share in taxes by moving their company headquarters to other countries & they are giving up their citizenship and living outside the USA.

They have killed the Middle Class by cutting decent jobs & created record numbers of people living paycheck to paycheck. 

Greed is slowly but surely killing America & more & more we are becoming a society of "Have's" an "Have Nots".

Very good post there Moose. I knew some of the ones you mentioned but did not know of the service they were in or some of their awards.  May the ones no longer with us R.I.P.       Semper Fi to the Marines and job well done for all of them.
