Iraq really is breaking up, we will hold referendum: Barzani

Massoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), told CNN International that “Iraq is obviously falling apart" and that they will hold a referendum in the region to ask people whether they will remain a part of Iraq or will have their own state.

"And it’s obvious that the federal or central government has lost control over everything. Everything is collapsing – the army, the troops, the police," Barzani said during an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour. "We did not cause the collapse of Iraq. It is others who did. And we cannot remain hostages for the unknown," he added.

"Iraq Kurdistan President Barzani gives me first concrete sign Iraq really is breaking up + Western policy behind the curve," Amanpour tweeted late June 23 when announcing the interview.

Barzani had told Sky News Arabia TV on April 8 that an independent Kurdish state is to be established and they are going to hold a referendum to decide about the issue, pointing out that they are moving towards a confederation with Iraq.

Beginning late on June 9, militants led by the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) overran most of one Iraqi province and parts of three others north of Baghdad.

Iraqi forces made a "tactical" withdrawal from three western towns on June 22, as the militants widened an offensive that has already overrun swathes of territory.

As far as Texas goes, we'd all be a lot better off if they did secede.

As far as the Kurds go, they don't decide it all. But that is irrelevant. What Barzani says may come to pass - a division of Iraq - if the US army does not step up and they can't stop fighting in Baghdad. The Sunnis have been sidelined for years by the Shia majority and if the Shia keep it up, they will lose Sunni areas and Kurdish areas - and that's 2/3 of Iraq. And that's the end of the IQD.

As for TV propaganda, they all do it. The best is the "fair and balanced" station. They are the laughing stock of the US - except for white men aged 60-80.

They might not have a say in the mater. It looks like it is heading for a break up whether they like it or not.

No offense, Chinadawg, but Phoenix has been "nailing" things re this investment for years...here's one example...For years Phoenix has stated that the dinar will definitely "RV" NOT FLOAT, then a few months ago, now the IQD "will definitely be floating".  Life and all of its effects and events, are ever-changing.

Dontlop...I completely agree with you.

Rico, they sure can try and now that they've re-acquired Kirkuk, it would be a good time to fly the coop...or at least, I'd see it that way...lol.

another point on the Texas issue......it is one of the few states here that actually has the legal right to secede.  So before you go laughing at the idea, get your facts and your research straight FIRST.

And the Kurds also have the legal, consitutional right to secede from Iraq.  And right now, lol, there is NOTHING to stop them either.  hahahhhahahahahhaha  And even Turkey last week said they would welcome a "friendly and cooperative" Kurdistan on their border.  the story is here on DV, so again, do your research before you sneer at someone.

And you can't trust 100% any of the mainstrem media, on either side of the aisle, lol, but the point is, the Kurds are the ONLY stable part of Iraq, and the Kurds are the ONLY real serious oil pumping part of Iraq.  Check the numbers for the last year, you will find that damn near all the oil out of Iraq has been from the Kurds.  Not all, but damn near.  Why do you think all those oil companies have been pulling out and the OIl Ministry has been letting them out of the contracts WITHOUT penalties?  Again, the article is in DV archives.  Again, do your research, don't just sneer.  Makes you look and sound like a knee jerk fool.  And I know you are smarter than that.

Sure it is up to more than "just him".  But the point is, THEY are doing something.  The rest of that country is going to hell in a hand basket.

No offense taken..............but one thing about Phoenix that I like, in the last year I have listened to him  he has not been a call the RV guru type everyday or every week, actually i remember him saying back in Dec/Jan when others were calling the RV he was very much laid back and said we would not be seeing anything before may/june to get excited about.......he does not just spew from the mouth he seems to have some reasoning behind his statements, as for as folks changing there minds from a RV to  FLOAT ? MANY HAVE DONE THAT, HE IS NOT ALONE, JUST SAYING HE IS MUCH MORE INFORMATIVE THAN AN OAKIE OR A TONY.

People may not like Texas especially libs because wrong or right you lean your politics on the side of social issues. Fact remains, while lib places like California over tax the few to pay for the entitlement state of mass welfare, they can't seem to comprehend how a state like Texas has a booming economy and has a surplus instead of a deficit. Btw it is based on less taxes which enables business and workers to keep more of their $$$ which leads to more $$$ the average person has to spend on luxuries which leads to more demand for things, which leads to more manufacturing, which leads to more jobs and so on. I don't live in Texas but it seems to me, what they are doing works... So NO I would not like to see them pull away from the US, I would prefer the rest of the states follow suit. If Texas left it would be much like the Kurds leaving a$$backwards Baghdad in the dust.

Barzani: We will raise the independence of Kurdistan on John Kerry, and on al-Maliki to step down

THURSDAY, JUNE 24, 2014 10:37 MVA

Twilight News / said Massoud Barzani, President of Kurdistan Region, said that the situation in Iraq can not be sustained as the current, adding that the Iraqi government did not ask them to fight Daash, but stressed that they would defend Kurdistan against any aggressor.

barzani-maliki.jpg

He spoke Barzani, in an interview with Christiane Amanpour, about the future of Iraq and the sectarian divisions in the country, at a time when he said that Iraq is no longer the same, and that the State is witnessing "a new Iraq."

Barzani pointed out that Iraq suffers from a "collapse of the clear," and that "the central government has lost control of everything."

He continued by saying, "We did not create the collapse of Iraq, but we changed the reason, we can not remain hostage to the unknown," adding, "It is time to identify the Kurdish identity and their drawing for their future."

Independence has always been a dream to the Kurds, and although the Kurdistan region characterized by self-rule over the two decades, but they did not indicate a desire to achieve that dream of independence.

But recent events and it seems to have helped in moving this issue, as Barzani said, "We are seeing a new Iraq is different from Iraq, which we knew from before ten days or two weeks went."

"The recent events in Iraq, confirmed that the Kurdish people have to seize the opportunity now, and that the Kurdish people to determine their own future," adding that he will present the independence of Kurdistan and the U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, during his visit to Iraq on Tuesday.

He pointed out that Barzani will ask a question to Kerry said: "How long must the Kurdish people to stay on this case?" He said, adding, "The Kurdish people have the right to select their own destiny alone."

Barzani emphasized that reconciliation can take place in the state, the condition of it, "the existence of an understanding between Shiites and Sunnis, although there was a guarantee for a real partnership in power, he said," but the situation is very complicated, and responsible for what happened he must step down, "and when asked if the Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, this meant, he replied: "Of course, he is the Commander in Chief of the Army, has built himself an army of supporters personally, and not supporters of the state, has been manipulated power and strength, and led the army, and this was the result."

Barzani replied in the negative when asked if the student-Maliki, Kurdish military forces, or Peshmerga, fighting alongside the Iraqi army, saying, "The Prime Minister asked us to fight, but on the contrary opposed any request for assistance."

He added that the Iraqi government has warned of the threat Daash, months before the imposition of regulatory control of the city of Mosul, near the Iraqi border, Kurdish, which is the second largest city in the state, Barzani added that he has witnesses to warn him.

Barzani also pointed out that not everything that happens is because of the organization "Daash" alone, but he took advantage of dissatisfaction with the Iraqi people from al-Maliki, stressing "the need to distinguish between the legitimate rights and what the terrorists are trying to achieve."

When asked about the possibility of change at the hands of advisers of the 300 sent by the United States, he replied: "I do not think so, I do not think that it can achieve a balance of power, and this can not be resolved militarily, it is a political issue and must be resolved politically, and then it can be a military solution is the easiest, if there was a political agreement. "

Peshmerga forces that could have taken advantage of the opportunity, when it took control of the city of Kirkuk recently, which is the oil-rich region, which considers Kurds an integral part of the territory of their region.

Barzani said, "We did not have a doubt at any time that Kirkuk is part of Kurdistan," noting that the Kurdistan tried to include Kirkuk to ten years ago, commenting, "We have not seen any seriousness of the central government, and since I started the events in Iraq now, it has returned Thread of the re-re-launch of Kirkuk to Kurdistan. "

It is noteworthy that in his meeting with Barzani, the Kurdish parties in the region clung Kirkuk, stressing that it does not return to the pre-events of Mosul, in a sign that they will not give up Kirkuk.
