An Army Ranger who helped rescue Jessica Lynch, the soldier who was taken prisoner in Iraq in 2003, has died.

Command Sergeant Major Martin R Barreras, 49, died in Texas after being shot in Afghanistan, the Defence Department said in a statement.

He was shot on May 6 in Herat Province when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire, it added.

He died a week later from his wounds.

Fox News reported that Sgt Maj Barreras was the leader of the team that rescued Private Lynch from an Iraqi hospital.

Pte Lynch was captured after her convoy was ambushed and she was hurt in a crash.

At the time of her capture and rescue she was hailed as an American heroine and icon of the war.

But she later criticised accounts of her ordeal, saying they had been exaggerated.

For example, initial reports that she had resisted her capture and fired at her abductors were later denied as it emerged that she had been unconscious immediately after the crash.

Sgt Maj Barreras, who was originally from Arizona, is survived by his wife, two daughters and son, according to the Army Times.
