Veterans Defy Shutdown & ‘Break’ Into WWII Memorial — Can You Guess Who Helped Them?

Oct. 1, 2013 12:11pm Oliver Darcy

Several Republican members of Congress removed barricades from the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. on Monday and escorted veterans onto the grounds that were legally closed because of the government shutdown.

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) told reporters at the scene she was going for a morning walk when she heard that World War II veterans were being stopped from entering their own memorial.

“I ran over as quick as I could … and I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Bachmann said. “There were all these veterans standing here behind police tape and they are prevented from going in to see the memorial.”

“About maybe eight to 12 of us members, one member had a scissor cut the tape and then we just escorted the veterans in,” she continued. “You should have seen these veterans. They had smiles from ear to ear. They were thrilled.”

National Parks Service spokeswoman Carol Johnson said she was unsure how the government would deal with situation going forward.

“We are seeking guidance,” Johnson told reporters at the scene.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), who was one of the members to escort the veterans into the grounds, suggested he and other members of Congress would be at the memorial every day to let veterans in.

“I will be active as I need to be in supporting the access to our memorials with our veterans,” he told reporters on a conference call.

One witness told TheBlaze the veterans were excited to gain entry onto the grounds.

“They were really touched,” California resident Jennifer Mason said. “I think they felt really honored.”

Fred Martin, a Navy veteran who fought in the Korean War, told TheBlaze he felt like he has been “robbed” of his trip to D.C. which he had planned for nearly a year.

Martin expressed gratitude towards the members of Congress who allowed veterans to enter the memorial.

“Whatever party they are in, whoever they are — thank you,” said Martin. “We were told we were only going to be able to see it from the outside and it’s really nice to be in here and think about all those that gave their lives and sacrificed.”

“This is all open,” he added. “You have to have security around anyway, so why not just let people walk around?”

A group of World War II veterans in an Honor Flight group Tuesday knocked over barriers imposed during the government shutdown at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C., to get inside.

As part of the federal government shutdown, national parks are closed. But the group of veterans continued to the monument Tuesday, as reported by Stars and Stripes reporter Leo Shane:

The greatest generation leads the charge one last time

As our freedom is being stolen from us at a alarming rate and this generation refuses to give up.

They storm the ramparts one last time

What will happen to us when they all die off?

We no longer have the guts or the will power to be free

Our motto is don’t fight tyranny in our land it only hurts my pay check

We dishonor the blood that was shed to make us and has been spilled to keep us free

I watched on Fox News as some of our Republican senators and congressmen helped move the barricades. This was just Obama being mean-spirited and nasty again. Sometimes, I still find it hard to believe he would stoop so low. But apparently there is no low to which he will not stoop to get even for a fancied slight. He's a petty little man.

Since it is a open air monument there is no cost to keep it open. In fact it cost them more money to close it.

Having to pay man power to put up closed sign`s and yellow tape and barriers.

Why do they always strike out at the Vets first .

Good point Dawg...when it come to these men, we as a nation owe our very freedom to the actions these MEN took, placing thier lives on the line . For the Commander in Chief to not take this into consideration upon this event just shows his depth. How great would it have been if Obummer only stated; ''This nation is now shouting down for political purposes BUT  the institutions this nation hold dearest to our hearts and on top of that list includes the institutions that honor the people that give us the right to have this right, upon all else we will honor and stand up for the men and women that stood for our nation in our darst ours by not enteraining the idea of closer''...

Obama, Reid, Pelosi and some of the other Dem pukes are just trying to hurt the average person for a political statement.  Here is a statement for you:  Go Home and Leave America alone!!!!!  We can do fine without you!!!!  Get your heads out of your butts and start doing what you are paid to do and do your jobs of LISTENING TO AMERICA AND NOT YOUR PARTY!!!!!  If I make any strong statements I will be removed from Dinarvets.

I can't believe any politician had the nerve to show up at Arlington to get their face time, when thousands of folks just blocks away were being sent home without pay and an uncertain future.  There is plenty of blame to go around......no need to pick a side.  There is no doubt in my mind that the "Greatest Generation" with their family and friends in tow would  have found a way around the barriers without the help of congressional blood suckers.  As always, just my opinion.

GO RV, then BV

I'm with you PG. These men are heroes to me. To have them blocked from something that is - in a way - rightfully theirs, is just infuriating.

I found out last night that with all this going on, Rep. Steve Daines (R-Mont) is donating his salary as long as this debacle goes on to the Big Sky Honor Flight.

Gets him points in my book. If he decides to run for Congress - he's got my vote. Have also personally met him. Seems like the no - nonsense type.

The National World War II Memorial was funded almost entirely by private contributions, as specified in Public Law 103-32. The campaign received more than $197 million in cash and pledges. support came from hundreds of thousands of individual Americans, hundreds of corporations and foundations, veterans groups, dozens of civic, fraternal and professional organizations, states and one territory, and students in 1,200 schools across the country.

Donated and pledged funds were used to cover the total project costs of approximately $182 million. These costs include site selection and design, construction and sculpture, a National Park Service maintenance fee required by the Commemorative Works Act, groundbreaking and dedication ceremonies, fund raising, and the 11-year administrative costs of the project from its inception in 1993 through completion in 2004.

Remaining funds are held on deposit with the U.S. Treasury in a National WWII Memorial Trust Fund. The funds will be used by the American Battle Monuments Commission solely to benefit the World War II Memorial.

Why would the National Park Service or the Obama WhiteHouse have a reason to shut down something that was paid for by private citizens?

The tour bus turnaround at Mount Vernon closed by Park Police. Zero maintenance required.
