Western Companies in Iraq Taking Precautions

For those of you who may be following the news in Iraq and/or in the region, you may know that things are not in the best circumstances. Baghdad has a serious car bomb problem. The Iraq security forces are having trouble curtailing this as well as the hostile acts that occurring on a daily basis in Baghdad and the rest of the country.

We have neighboring Syria who may experience the most powerful war fighting machine this world has ever known. As our US congress votes in a few days on whether to give the current U.S. administration the thumbs up to start launching tomahawk missiles on Syria.

Western companies working in Iraq are slowing operations or they are moving operations out of harms way. Whether it may be internal threats or external such as; the possible future war in Syria with the West. The war in Syria would surely cause major disruptions inside Iraq for many western companies. U.S. has a very large Embassy and that most likely would be a target for militant groups that are waiting in the shadows for marching orders.

The warnings may become reality as the Iraq’s South Oil Company (SOC) is warning western companies in southern Iraq to restrict movements. And, the Syrian war has not even started yet. There could be logistic problems for many companies working within southern Iraq when you tell them that they can not move around. You will see the export of Iraq oil sales go down. In the future, you will see western companies that are located inside the Baghdad area and in the International Zone leave the area as attacks increase. “I think all Western companies should be careful to not have too many people in Iraq as long as the American war games last,” a senior oil executive in Baghdad has said.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the United States had intercepted an order from an Iranian official instructing militants in Iraq to attack U.S. interests in Baghdad in the event of a strike.

The Iraq government is contemplating on whether or not to have the elections next year in 2014.

The current government may use the excuse of the lack of security to postpone next years national elections. Prime Minister Maliki is still undecided on whether or not he will run again in 2014. And yes, he is eligible to run in next years elections if he so chooses.

On another note the Central Bank of Iraq continues to suspend the printing of the new Iraq currency. Some would like to dispute this as only rumors on the street and that this is all a bluff and will print sooner, however, that is simply not the facts. The Central Bank remains committed to a stable Iraq dinar. So, in the meantime, we will just have to watch and wait.

There you go Sandfly peace

What do you think about western companies in kurdistan, northern iraq?

Cheers

I've no idea how it would or would not effect the corporate structures of the region, however, the Kurds definitely have rebels in play in this area and conflict. In essence, their focus is that of opposing the al Nusra ( that some in here have elsewhere incorrectly identified as the "good" guys). al-Nusra is indeed fighting on the side of the FSA rebels , however they are extreme Islamist. Indeed there are those who would argue that control of the FSA by the al-Nusra recently shifted into the stronger power of the group, is what precipitates the question of a strike.  The Kurds primary focus is to prevent al-Nusra extremists from infiltrating, penetrating or gaining any kind of foothold in the region, as well as to protect the region and their villages from any kind of attack by this rather opportunistic group.

Staying as far as possible from Turkish and  Syrian borders would be a good idea if possible. If midst the already existing conflict, Syria is bombed, I personally would expect to see stronger alignment along tribal ties, keeping in mind that the Iraqi government is 'sympathetic' with the Assad regime. How those ties would manifest is an not realistically known or predictable by any reliable standard. :peace:

As soon as it re-directed us to VERIZON, we bailed.... on accounta we hate the NSA. <_<

But suffice to say - if they are taking precautions - good.

Cannot depend on our gubment to be there for them and keep them safe,

as it turns out our gubment IS THE PROBLEM !

the first link was misspelled so if you got redirected to Verizon it means you probably have Verizon FiOS as a ISP or at the very least are using their DNS server. If either of these is true avoiding the Verizon search page wont help you avoid NSA as you're already using Verizon server for internet.

the redirect is something they started in 07? for link typo's

not meaning to keep hijacking this thread but..

that is weird, its possible you are using a  Verizon DNS, try misspelling other address's and see if it happens. And if you really wanna surf the internet NSA free, get a TOR browser 2.4

Verizon's servers (sometimes identified as "Level 3 Communications" or as "Genuity" / "gtei.net") appear at 4.2.2.1 through 4.2.2.6.

Sarg. You've got a good handle on the Verizon problem. Unfortunately Verizon wasn't and ISN'T the only "sell-out." But they may indeed BE THE WORST cop-out of their customers' proprietary and private matters.

What a shame. Kind of looks like George Orwell just misses it by 2-1/2  decades. Instead of 1984, it is 2012, 2013 and no telling HOW WORSE next year.

ALL in the name of "protecting YOU," of course.

Seems that I served once to help guarantee the protection of our rights against unreasonable search. Oh well. . .WHO's listening anymore? So long as people don't have their trips to STARBUCKS interrupted, and they swallow the koolaid that reading everybody's mail - even our most private mail - is SOMEHOW making us safer, the NSA and the other agencies can "justify" their claim for need of a GREATER, LARGER budget.

I'm reminded that despite our new and "enlightened" era of CO-OPERATION between agencies, that they all STILL sing the Kennel Ration song: "MY DOG'S BIGGER THAN YOUR DOG. MY DOG'S BIGGER THAN YOURS. . . .etc."

Make NO MISTAKE about it, it is even WORSE with a smartphone! I am about to RETURN to a BASIC cell phone of the "THROW-AWAY" kind and changing the SIM Card every week and restrict my writing back to the OLD FASHIONED way and making use of the OCCASIONAL FAX by encrypted FAX machine, using one-time cypher for the letter. Otherwise, just like George Orwell said, "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING/LISTENING TO YOU!"

Discussing this issue of "SELLING-OUT" their customers for MONEY with AT&T, Sprint and Verizon, the REGIONAL-level managers and below claim NO KNOWLEDGE of such a thing and that they would NEVER do such a thing upon Americans!  RIGHT- - -and no American could POSSIBLY be effected by Obama  striking Syria, RIGHT? Some good  people are WORKING on the development of a reasonably effective anti-NSA, anti-spy software but that which is EFFECTIVE today, they break within MONTHS because WE FUND THEM LIMITLESSLY to do JUST THAT.

DEFUNDING NSA and the other Constitution-offending agencies is our only hope for getting back control over our government but I am SERIOUSLY afraid even THAT won't stop the problem now. They are being funded by so many "black," non-congressionally-approved, Non-appropriated fund "earning" activities and programs, that NSA (and CIA comes CLOSE) will soon have sufficient self-provided funds that they don't NEED congressional money any more!

Perhaps Edward Snowden DID do a service, after all! Yes. . .he dangerously EXPOSED some of our people, but he FOREVER OPENED THE EYES to all US Citizens that our government cannot be TRUSTED or believed in what they SAY!

Our RELATIONSHIP has changed fundamentally. We no longer have an UNCLE!

He is NOW. . . .FATHER SAM!

Everything you write on the Internet or say in a phone call now is scanned, people. You absolutely CANNOT believe this is JUST for foreigners interfacing with Americans. You may not be SAYING anything bad or evil or illegal. . .but THAT isn't the issue. In a "take-off" from a great American Patriot, I may disagree with what you SAY, sir. . . .but I will defend to the death your right to SAY it (and do so PRIVATELY)."
