Chest Pains

Recommended Posts

When I was 38 years old way back when, on a Saturday Night, I was dancing with a beautiful blonde, when I had to tell her I needed to sit down because I was suffering from shortness of breath.  The next day, I was sitting at home after eating  a big bowl of spaghetti and started having the same chest pains, with a tightness in my jaws.  I began to search on the internet (yes they had that back then) and really couldn't find anything, I thought about emailing one of my doctors but didn't want to disturb him about something so trivial.  The pain got bad enough that I finally drove myself to the hospital.

When I arrived at the VA Hospital I told the person at the desk that I was suffering from chest pains and they immediately took me into the ER and started an EKG and drew blood.  My  EKG came back normal, but the blood test came back that I had elevated heart enzymes which indicated a heart attack.  Monday morning I had a Heart Cath performed and they discovered I had two arteries that were 98% blocked and they inserted two stents to open up the arteries.

(12 Years Later)

The beginning of this year, I started to have chest pains again and ignored them, because I had other "more important" things to do.  In March of this year, after my father past away, and the morning of his funeral, I began having severe chest pains, with pain in my jaw, and put it off because I wanted to be at his funeral.  Following this even, I had one other occasion of severe chest pain, and occasional minor chest pain.

Saturday afternoon, I received a phone call that my eldest Aunt passed away, which is something I had been expecting.  I called my brother and informed him of the news, and we began to talk about other things going on in my family, and I mentioned to him that I was havig chest pains.  He told me that he wasn't ready to lose me and that I needed to go get checked out.  Several hours later, around 10:30 PM, I began having chest pains again, this time with tightness in my jaws.  I got up and drove myself to the VA Hospital, about 16 miles away.  When I arrived, I again told the admissions clerk that I was having chest pains.  They immediately took me into the ER and ran an EKG and blood tests, which showed I had elevated heart enzymes in my blood.

Monday afternoon, they took me into cardiology and performed another Heart Cath and discovered one of the two stints I had installed last time was 85% blocked.  Fortunately for me, they were able to insert another stint inside the old one to open the artery.

People, whatever the reason, if you are experiencing any kind of chest pain, get it check out immediately!  Don't be like me and wait until it is almost too late.

This happened to me last Sept and I when to the heart center in Franklin Tenn because at the time we lived in Spring Hill. My enzymes were normal but my blood pressure was 178 over 110 so they put me on a tread mill and shot me up with a Radio active Isotope where they could watch it travel thru my blood stream.....I had a 98 % blocked artery about two inches from my heart and this one is where the blood dumps back into the heart. They put a stent in me and so far I am fine but I have another that is 50% blocked but they will not touch it until it gets 75% or more. I take blood thinner, blood pressure and heart beat regulators and one aspirin. Thank God he chose to let me live a little longer, I am still looking for that purpose as to why.

Twenty four years ago on August 6th I had to have a double by-pass.  Check ups are extremely important, but watching the signs is the most important thing you can do.  Got the zipper scar on my chest and I still have the little heart-shaped pillow they gave the heart bypass patients at the hospital.  Been there, did that, and don't want to do that again!

Heed the warning signs.

I agree - DV is a richer place with Markinsa and HeavyDutyand God has plans for you gentlemen.

Thank you for your cautionary tales.  My fiance's father had the same symptoms while visiting family in MN.  They took him in and the same thing basically - 2 stents had to put into artieris that were 90% blocked.

Fast forward 2 months.  He is back in MT and started having the pains again, so he goes to his cardioligist.  The stents he had emplaced are now 85% plugged.  Apparently diabetics can have an issue with this.  Just something more to pass on.  Long story short, he wound up having a quintuple (yep - 5) bypass, but is doing well.  It's been 3 weeks and he is back to taking short hikes in the hills behind his house.

Again - don't ignore the signs!

My discharge nurse said that if you don't take the Plavix religously (everyday) in stint blockage could occur, and he related a story similar to your future father-in-law's. Congrats on your upcoming nuptuals. :twothumbs:

That's the funny thing - he was taking the Plavix, it wasn't working.  More research (on our part) and we found out that it isn't very effective with those who are insulin controlled diabetics.

We've had some good luck with the supplement I use and am affiliated with.  Appears to free up the fatty acids in the blood stream in a way that lets the body burn them.

Hmm... They said I was diabetic and put me on insulin.  What supplement are you referring to?

Well - just to play by the rules *lol*.  Afraid I can't post a link here or even really mention it because I'm an affiliate with the company.   (This is being done slightly tongue in cheek by the way...)

Thanks for all your stories. Hope they help me in the future if needed.

I have had heart palpitations for year's. Then, heart beat with hissing in my ears. Then migraines with no pain, just the shimmering lights and blurry spots in my eyes. Then, severe head aches when I take naps. Dizzyness when I get up after sitting for a while. TMJ, tightness in my jaw, with popping muscles in my jaw. All the symptoms got worse. I went to the doctor the last time, she said you could drop dead at any second, you probably wont though. You have high cholesterol 268, but thats not what I'm concerned about, its your triglycerides, very high. Ok, I took the meds and felt much better till I got laid off and lost my medical and all the symptoms came back. So, I started taking 1000 mg of Niacin every day and my symptoms are gone, mostly. Oh, and my sleep apnea and ears nose and throat specialist said you have pre death sleep apnea and one of the worst cases they had ever seen. I have a cpap now, it helps alot. So, I think everything is fine now.

Went back to an Earlier post from Thaiexpat -

"Typically, high cholesterol can come from: excessive consumption of sugars, inflammation, or oxidative stress. sugars from starches and grains are big ones on the list because people think they are good for them vs. coke, cake and ice cream. fruit juice is also a huge source of sugars-yes, even the organic, no-sugar added types. I would check that person's thyroid, C-reactive protein and homocysteine levels, review their diet for any carbohydrate outside of a veggie or fruit, make sure they are eating non-vegetable oil fats, check for any possible inflammation issues (esp the TEETH) and go from there. Also, cholesterol is an anti-oxidant, therefore, as we age, our cholesterol level will probably go up to deal with more free-radical generation/exposure. And YES your body makes about 78-80% of cholesterol found in your blood. SO, the big question is: If its soo dangerous, why does your body produce so much of it?

A case to illustrate this: My brother is 4 years older than I. He runs daily, but eats a lot of "regular" foods and drinks cola daily. His cholesterol level is 400 +. Compared to my diet and low levels of exercise (15 mins 2-3 x per week), we can see that SUGAR is the biggest difference. We both look somewhat similar in general appearance, but my health is vastly superior. Again, this is LESS exercise and more fats. hope this helps. Cheers
