The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has called on the Obama administration to pursue civil rights charges against George Zimmerman.

“BREAKING: Zimmerman acquitted on all charges. We will update you as we work to pursue civil rights charges against Zimmerman through the DOJ,” the official Twitter account of the NAACP tweeted Saturday evening after Zimmerman was acquitted of the murder of Trayvon Martin.

The NAACP also tweeted out a petition urging the Justice Department to “open a civil rights case against George Zimmerman.”

“Attorney General Eric Holder,” the petition reads, “The Department of Justice has closely monitored the State of Florida’s prosecution of the case against George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin murder since it began. Today, with the acquittal of George Zimmerman, it is time for the Department of Justice to act.”

“The most fundamental of civil rights — the right to life — was violated the night George Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Trayvon Martin,” the NAACP wrote. “We ask that the Department of Justice file civil rights charges against Mr. Zimmerman for this egregious violation.”

“Please address the travesties of the tragic death of Trayvon Martin by acting today,” the NAACP wrote.

The head of the NAACP and Attorney General Eric Holder have both expressed their admiration for one another.

NAACP president Benjamin Todd Jealous wrote an op-ed for The Hill June 17 entitled “Attack on Holder is attack on civil rights,” which praised Holder, the head of the Obama administration’s Justice Department.

“Holder is among the finest attorneys general to ever serve this nation. But over the past four-plus years, he has faced one baseless allegation after another. We cannot fully know what motivates his detractors, but many seem to be obsessed by a coarse desire to politically damage the pro-civil-rights priorities set by his Department of Justice and the Obama administration. Efforts to assassinate his character and drive him from office represent more than a cynical campaign against a dedicated public servant; they are also an indirect attack on the civil and human rights of all Americans,” Jealous wrote with regard to nameless attacks on Holder that he did not describe at any point in his editorial.

“Just this month, he delivered remarks at the Medgar Evers Memorial Commemoration at Arlington National Cemetery. The attorney general’s very presence was a reaffirmation of the legacy of the civil rights hero. Just as Evers’s actions laid the foundation for so much of the civil rights progress in our nation, Holder is carrying the mantle of civil rights protection forward. The NAACP is most proud to have his back,” Jealous wrote.

“And it’s a privilege to join so many good friends, distinguished guests, and indispensable civil rights leaders – including the NAACP’s President, Ben Jealous,” Holder said in his remarks at the June 5 ceremony, which was also attended by President Bill Clinton.

The assumption that "a running man is guilty, otherwise why would he run?" would be wrongly used in this case.  Zimmerman and his family need to seek shelter "from the storm." There are too many "crazy" people that are seeking his life.  And if they do succeed in killing him, the killers would be branded as "heros."  The NAACP would just to their defense with "justifiable homicide."

IMO, We need our leader Pres Obama to step forward and calm the masses before anything crazy happens. He has the ability and responsibility imo to back the legal process. His silence is questionable - peace

Zimmerman called the police first thing. he wasnt on some manhunt. He calledbecause he cared for those people who has tresspassers on there property. zimmerman was a volunteer who. gave up his time to protectand defend his fellow neighbors. he was a good samaritian.

the fact thestate tried to painthim as a vigilante......is disgusting and theyve lost all credibility. obama is just trying to point attention on this ........to coverup his failed admin and his numerous scandals

Rather than posturing does any one give a dayumn that a young man who was minding his business going to a home that he was loving in is now dead!!!! What ever the testimony he is still dead. What actions did he commit that warrant the death penalty?? Some in this forum are so politically biased they cannot even see that someone lost their life for no apparent reason!. Smh

The sad fact is NO one knows what transpired before the tragic event occured ........................except for those involved and yes one those is dead. It's all in what you choose to believe. I don't believe violence or retaliation is the answer for the unknown - peace

Yes, it mentioned calm specifically.  However it also mentioned gun violence......so I think many will lose sight of the "calm" part.   :peace:

I think he bit off more than he could chew when he decided to attack the guy following him. He should have booked it on home. Hindsight is always 20/20, but his choice to attack Zimmerman was the wrong one.

trayvon was trespassing on private property. thats a long way from minding his own business. secondly......he decided to have a confrontation. Unfortunately for trayvon people are aloud to defend themselves in florida.

You go beating on people....maybe dont choose those that concealed carry to protect themselves from these type of scenarios. this is why we conceal carry.

Zimmerman "hey what r u doing back here". Trayvons answer should of been. "sorry sir just trying to stay out of the rain". No instead he qmbushed zimmerman and ended up dead. those are the risks you run....when you start into domestic violence and battery

And trayvon should of been at a juvenile detention center for his two offenses of hqving stolen jewelry and marujuana at school. suspended twice. heres a young man. wrapped up in major problems....maybe his parents should have taught him better.

instead why dont you.....blqme some community volunteer who gave unlimited hours and years of dedication to his fellow neighbors.

Perfect example as to why people shouldnt care and mind there own business. zimmerman should of just let his neighborhood in florida end up like detroit.

Actually he was NOT trespassing. He was returning back to the house where his father and fiance were staying. That point was already established and proven. His mistake was resorting to physical violence and the attacks that broke Zimmerman's nose and bashed the back of his head. According to Zimmerman he acted in self defence and no one could prove otherwise after seeing the injuries he sustained. Plus the medical examiner ruled that Treyvon was shot while ON TOP of Zimmerman so that supports that he was on the bottom being attacked.

I don't get why justice thinks there was some Civil Rights violation. Zimmerman grew up with blacks in his household that were virtually like relatives. He even has a well documented history of supporting blacks. Like the lady and kid he supported financially because she had no husband or other means of support. Plus on the phone call with dispatch he never said anything like the n-word or other racial comments. He only mentioned color AFTER he was asked. Of course the media tried to edit the call to make it sound otherwise. He said things like a-hole and other things but nothing that would be considered "racist".

I wonder where all these politicians and activists were when the black guy (also in Florida) shot and killed the white guy and plead self-defense. There were no calls for the justice department to investigate, police to arrest the guy etc. AND he shot and killed a war vet in front of his 8 year old daughter and several other children. Luckily he was eventually arrested, tried and convicted because it was clear it was not self defence. In this case the shooter left the comfort of his home, approached the guy on a basketball court across the street, lifted his shirt brandishing his gun and did other foolish things. He (a black guy) then killed the victim (a white guy who was a recent war vet) and initially he was brought in for questioning (just like Zimmerman) and released without charges. The the truth was eventually exposed and he was charge and convicted rightfully so.
